MMA Quick Quote: Herschel Walker contemplates April 2010 return
"I’m going get back into the gym and say I’d love to have another fight, and I’m gonna work hard, but I’m leaving it my trainers and coaches’ hands and the fighters at the gym. If they think I’m not ready, they gotta tell me, and I will swallow my pride and not do it. I want to know that I’m still the Herschel of -- that 47-year-old that’s got a 25-year-old way of doing things. If I have lost that, then I don’t think I’ll fight again. My thing is go out and perform at the highest of levels. I’m not there to be a circus act. I want to be a pure fighter."
Former gridiron great and 1-0 mixed martial artist Herschel Walker tells Sherdog.com that he still has the desire to compete for Strikeforce -- pending approval from his coaches and team mates at American Kickboxing Academy (AKA). Walker had a successful debut over Greg Nagy at last month's "Miami" event despite looking like a well-conditioned athlete with just three months of training -- which is exactly what he was. Any Maniacs out there want to see if he can take up Scott Coker's offer and progress into something more than just an "attraction," or should he get out after proving his point?

I hope he does fight again!
This guy did an awesome job his first time out! And he’s as humble and respectful as any Athlete has ever been! A true Martial Artist’s spirit!

I would like to see him again as well...
As long as he is facing opponents with comparable experience levels.

I wouldnt mind a slight step up. Maybe someone like 8-3 or something with no notable wins over big guys maybe even a journeyman

maybe Whitehead

So next time FEDOR is kicking your ass, don't be offended or hurt, he may be just trying to tell you he likes your hat.
I dont think that to be wise. I was thinking a non wrestler.

In SF they're hard to find at 205...HW if different but at 210-215 Walker will struggle

Guys..
That fight sucked BALLZ; and he weighs 214 lbs, yea great humble guy and all but that’s not entertainment. 2 guys fighting at HW and one weighed 210 lbs?? He needs to drop to 205 for starters, then get on to the undercard. I got nothing against him competing but there’s no reason to have guys this green (0-0 rec vs 1-1 rec??) on the televised portion of a big show. NADA!

LOL Give Us all a Break Dude
Walker is 47 and just started MMA and he completely dominated a guy with a bit more experience with clearly less athelticism sure but it was impressive. Why does he need to drop? he isnt trying to compete in a weight division he just wants to compete MMA. At 47 weight cutting is probably agonizing, let him fight at the weight he and SF wants.
by AintNoSunshine on Feb 4, 2010 2:17 PM EST up reply actions
no doubt...and I don't know where he'd cut the weight from...guys body fat % has to be 4 or 5 % if not even lower

Yea but 214 lbs 6'2 COUTURE is a bigger HW than he is
I’m not saying don’t compete, but he needs to drop down and fight at 205 cause there are some BIG dudes at HW; unless their plan is to continue bringing 205ers up 5-10 lbs for a fight against Walker.

AND
Not to be cruel but like I said up top I’m not interested in tuning in for Herschel Walker; maybe if he can string some wins together and get into the mid level mix at least but the technique on display that night by both fighters was amatuer at best.

It's not cruel
I have to say he looked better than I expected and I give him all the credit for having the balls to even try it but let’s be honest…SF is just gonna keep feeding him cans and I for one wanna see better fights than that.
The one and only Smitty...
Gotta Admit for his age and considering the fact we hadnt seen him for how long prior to his announcement to MMA that he is still such a genetic freak and phenomenol athlete
by AintNoSunshine on Feb 4, 2010 2:20 PM EST up reply actions
i agree with o damn
how can anyone say that fight was good or deserved to be on main card? it sucked!
big time..not that Hieron/Riggs was entertaining but it shoulda been on the main card

I just hope all you guys at 47 look back on this and realize how truly impressive it really is
by AintNoSunshine on Feb 4, 2010 2:34 PM EST up reply actions
it is impressive but is it TV main card worthy...maybe once but not again...if he's on a CBS main card I'll lose respect for SF

Actually
you have to combine those. You cant seperate it. And when you do so its very impressive. Guys this age thing really means alot. even Coutures skills have diminished even though he has found success. A 47 year old fighting combat sports is impressive and the fact he won so dominantly is impressive since Nagy actually had MMA experience.

No I Agree,
I am just saying Age is a huge factor in MMA
by AintNoSunshine on Feb 4, 2010 2:48 PM EST up reply actions
I wont.
Because MMA on television isnt about qualty fighters its about quality slash marketable fights. CNN (mainstream) covered Walkers fight not any of the main events. If Walker fights again I guarantee it will be main card.

Easily possible to get blasted for this idea
And Im not even sure how into this idea I am, but it kind of makes sense to me. Have Walker fight Ken Shamrock. They are about the same weight and age, and Shammy is a big name for the casual fan. If I was running SF, this would make sense to me – thats all Im sayin
not a bad idea...as long as its only a hobbie for Walker I see no prob with that

Sad to say but...
I think that’s a fight Shammy would actually win; Walker was in so many positions prior to that 3rd rd stoppage where he could end that fight and as old and decrepit as Ken has looked lately I still think he wins that one.

Yeah, I think Shamrock would be the betting favorite going in
And i would give him the advantage. But, it is clear that Herchel wants to test himself, so I think he would be interested in that fight. Lets face it, Ken has little else that he really can do other than fight, and this matchup would not be super dangerous for him. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense to me.
by domino effect on Feb 4, 2010 2:41 PM EST up reply actions
It Would Make Sense
however this is likely an idea to build Walkers name. Who knows how much longer Walker plans to fight and also Ken is still a threat on the ground I would imagine.
A Wrinkled Turd
who would flush alot of B and C level fighters down the toilet at 47 Years Of Age
by AintNoSunshine on Feb 4, 2010 2:27 PM EST up reply actions
With a year of MMA training
If you make an ass out of yourself, there will always be someone to ride you
A Year is Nothing Really.
I bet one year of MMA training for 98 perecent of MMAmamnia.com posters wouldnt be enough to compete with B and C level guys
by AintNoSunshine on Feb 4, 2010 4:02 PM EST up reply actions
mmamania.com posters??
of course not, im not a freak athlete like him nor i am a pro athlete like he was…but how about the NFL? or nba?? them training for a year and they crush b and c level guys
I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was.
I was agreeing sunshine. He can beat some guys that have been training 5-10 years or more at 47 after a year of training. He’s absolutely sick. Imagine if he did MMA instead of football. Just plain crazy!
If you make an ass out of yourself, there will always be someone to ride you
a year of training?
u guys realize he’s been involved in some sort of martial art for many many years right guys?
Even so.

im only interested if its against a higher level of competition.
the nagy fight was a joke and painful to watch. i have no interest in a repeat performance. Raise the level of competition or forget it. Same goes for lashley. this isnt amatuer hour. They only have 4 or 5 televised fights and we dont need to waste one on walker and a can. if he wants to test himself against an established journeyman im fine with it. he can be as humble and respectful as he wants but that dosnt make for an entertaining fight.

Respect him for wanting to compete in mma at his ages and isn’t doing so like conseco. Had to earn major respect for paying homage to a sport he loves. Can’t fault SF for cashing in on him either

I respect him more for giving his purse to charity

I'm totally shocked that Walker only got $600....
I mean come the fuck on, thats pathetic, total SHIT!!!!! Wouldn’t you think since it was going to charity it could of been 5g’s at least. Coenen and Walker might as well of stayed at home, I’m just shocked, it is a pure joke imo!!

dude...thats not how it works. That $600 was only listed for licensing fees...thats not what he made

McArthur is right, Walker made more
And donated all but 600 for the fees. At least that is my understanding lol.

thats what
everyone on here is saying, but until i see a number of how much he actually gave to charity i think he got 600 bucks haha
I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was.
What did he make so??

So how much of that went to charity??

everything he made went to charity
he said his agent and scott coker figured it out, he says he thinks it was around 6 figures.
Fedor played Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun and won.
AMERICA.....FUCK YEAH
Nice for Charity so.
Well done Walker.

Yep
I didn’t donate shit to Charity and $600.00 definatley isn’t picking up all my slack; you suck Walker! j/k

This will show us....
how much control Showtime and CBS have. If Walker fights Canseco on CBS in April you can officially put a fork in them.
Walker has the heart of a real martial artist
Much more so than a Brock Lesnar, or a Ken Shamrock…etc. This sport shouldn’t be all about ass kicking and shit talking. I think beyond ability, it was great to see a real athlete with a genuine love and respect for the sport on the main card. That alone is reason enough for Walker to return. I would definitely like to see him challenge himself against a stronger opponent next time though.
I can't help but like Herschel.
He’s quickly becoming sort of the “Bruce Springsteen” of Strikeforce for me… for lack of a more accurate analogy.
That being said.. I listen to a Springsteen record maybe twice a year, if that, and can say my same for my interest in watching future Walker fights.
