UFC Quick Quote: Shane Carwin won't be listening to Frank Mir talk

Mir-carwin3_medium

"I really haven’t thought much about it, but if Frank wants to take this fight in that direction, then that’s what will happen. Some fighters need to talk and do things like that. I respect Frank as a fighter and all that and if people want to see a great fight all they have to do is tune in; they don’t need the talk. I don’t really pay any attention to any of that. My focus is to go in there and fight. As soon as that cage door closes, I’m ready to fight and that’s what I love to do. I’m expecting a war. Mir is a former champion at the top of his game, I’m excited for it, and my prediction is a knockout; I don’t even know what round, I just want to go in there and throw some leather."

UFC heavyweight bruiser Shane Carwin tells the gang at Tapology that he's not interested in trading barbs with UFC 111 opponent Frank Mir prior to their March 27 showdown at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. Mir is known for his pre-fight trash talk and "The Engineer" is not going to going to start slinging mud, just leather. Mir is predicting a knockout, but will he side of the KO will he be on?

mir takes this

carwin doesn’t have a whole lot that he can do to mir…
he’s going to be majorly exposed during this fight.
I do like the guy though.

mir wins yep

Also, maybe one of the gamblers can tell me what they think the odds will be on this one and:

Jones/Vera.
Jones must be underdog but personally I’d have him so minor of one that i’d mark this with both as minor favorites. Doesn’t happen often but seems fitting here.

As for Mir vs Carwn I’d venture a guess at:
Mir -200
Carwin +100

Am I learning boys or these way off? Lol

I think your going to be right Boom

But I wouldn’t be surprised to see Carwin win at the same time. Yes Mir has shown a better all around game and faced much better competition, but Carwin has shown little weakness and really hasn’t needed to show much of his game because of his heavy hands. Is this a fight were Carwin will be tested on the ground, And if so and his ground game proves to be good what are his chances? Mirs stand up has improved dramatically over the last year and we all know he has great JJ and have seen him tested many times.

All we know for sure about Carwin is he’s big and has deadly power with his strikes. We also know he has a good camp and a wrestling back ground other than that Carwin is a mystery and with a win against a 100% focused and trained Mir will most likely vault Carwin into the top 5 and a title shot! It’s what I don’t know that makes this fight hard to pick but a motivated Mir is a tough fighter to bet against. I’m hoping Carwin does win so we can see Brock face someone other than Mir.

One thing we do know about Carwin....

His chin isnt all that. One swipe from Gonzaga and you could tell that his chin might be a little suspect. I think we all know that Mir has a decent chin. He gets hurt but not lights out. I believe Carwin’s chin isnt great and if Mir connects he’ll go out. I like Carwin too but hes not at Mir’s level yet…. UFC is hyping Carwin a little too much.

Mir by first round KO. Sorry Carwin.

He didn't get hit in the chin

he broke his nose against GG. His head movement is brutal though and your right Mir might be able to connect with ease?

I am taking Mir due to his overall game.

I like both guys, but have been a Mir fan since his 1st run (prior to the accident). Now that he is focused, improving his standup, and packing on some quality size, I think he will be to much for Carwin. At the very least I hope it at goes 3 rounds, so we can see how Frank’s cardio holds up with the new size. And so we get a chance to finally see more of Carwin’s game, specifically his ground game.

Gotta go with Mir as well

He’s coming up in size too; they’re both gonna weigh in at 265; Mir’s getting beastly..

Carwin is a big, slow, lumbering oaf. As long as Mir hasn’t lost too much speed in his quest to bulk up for Brock, he’ll pop Barney in the face a couple times, respectfully of course, then get it to the ground and start taking limbs apart.

im a bit worried about carwins chin though..

he was hurt against gg and was wobbled by neil wain thats why he took him down quickly.mirs basiclly saying that he only continued his mma career for the chance to fight brock again.the guy is seriously demented, talk about throwing all ur eggs in one basic.i really hope mir loses this one ill be pmsl with the inevitable mental breakdown of mr talk shit murr

Thief!

Since I don’t comment on here often, I will assume this is just coincidence. haha.

I can’t think of anything I would rather see than Mir getting knocked out. Not the Brock type of destruction that he sufferred but just a clean, good old fashioned lights out before the head hit the canvass knockout.

This will be a tough fight for Carwin. Mir will probably stand with him and with his reach, can showcase the decent boxing skills he used against a broken down Nog. But, Carwin will hit Mir, and he will hit him with power. And if there is anything holy in this world, Mir’s eyes will roll back, his body will crumble and his legs will go stiff. Pumped for this fight.

Looks like Carwin is trying to take his white horse onto the high road.

I guess he only likes to talk trash if it will earn him an undeserved title shot. Can’t stand either of these guys and I don’t care who wins, as long as they are both badly hurt I will be happy.

Agreed

They’re both tools and neither are going to beat Brock so who cares who wins as long as it’s a good fight and both get the crap kicked out of them. I do kinda hope that Carwin knocks Mir out cold to shut him up.

Weight and muscle are one thing

brock has been 285+ since college and the muscle he has is has had for years and years. Adding 15-20 pounds in three months or lets say even a year is not the same. Weight is one thing but really how much strength did Mir gain and how much speed did he lose? Will size help maybe a little but not as much as he are you are thinking.

im not stupid just easy to get you guys going.

Just having some fun. I know that odds are stacked against Mir if he gets there. And I know most likely he won’t win. But I’m also not naïve enough to think that this isn’t the best Mir out of the 3 fights should it happen. Neutralzing some of that extreme weight advantage that Brock ALWAYS has can’t hurt. And this is an insanely determined Mir as of late. I truly do believe this would be the best Brock/Mir match of the 3.

by daniel worby on Feb 4, 2010 11:15 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Just for a point of reference, the weight advantage Lesnar had over Mir, in terms of percentage of total body weight, was less than the percentage GSP had over Penn.

by P-Dub on Feb 4, 2010 11:19 AM EST up reply actions

The extra weight Mir has is not well conditioned either

Brocks and Carwins have been conditioned for years and I know jackson is a smart man and may even want Carwin to get this to the ground and test Mirs conditioning. Thats assuming Carwin and Jackson believe Carwins endurance is good enough wich they both have stated is?

"He broke tim sylvia’s arm…...So what?" – Brock Lesnar

by Puck Head on Feb 4, 2010 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

thats going off what terms?

I never see an actual weight on fight night listed anywhere. An actual record of it. Where do you find these? They make the 265/266 then swell up to whatever capablities that they can handle and feel comfortable at. Although I think its 285 for Brock, I don’t have any proof that he weighs 267 fight time or 284.

GSP said he’d be 182ish for fight night with Penn, and Penn said that’s too much to pack on to his small frame over night. Does anyone have proof he was at 175 or 186? I’ve never seen it. I’d really like to if anyone knows where we can find what they pack back on for fight time.

by daniel worby on Feb 4, 2010 11:51 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

They just dehydrate themselves

most guys that lose weight ahve it down to a science and something most wrestlers have done since they wrestled. Brock walks around 295- 300 but when he trains he’s 285ish and thats what he steps into the octagon around losing and gaining about 20 pounds. GSP is around 180ish, Anderson at MW is around 210ish and Alves is who is in the same weight division as GSP is around 195 the night of the fight!!

"He broke tim sylvia’s arm…...So what?" – Brock Lesnar

by Puck Head on Feb 4, 2010 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

hearsay

I know that’s what we’re lead to believe and is most likely true. But without an actual recorded fight night weighing this is all just what we suspect. I believe GSP may weigh 185 come fight time. But 25 in 24 hours and looking that ripped is pretty steep. I’d have to see the scale reading. 171 to 195 over niiight? I unno.

It'll take more than taht to shut Mir up.

The thing that I won’t most out of this fight is for Carwin to be exposed and sent back to the bottom of the pile where he belongs.

Brock didn't deserve his title shot either

but that doesn’t seem to bother most. Carwin didn’t say anything that wasn’t true about him either, Brock is a cocky arrogant prick. If Cain had put on a more convincing and exciting win against Kongo, then he might have been fighting Carwin, but he blew it. Carwin beating Gonzaga is a better win to me then Mir beating Kongo, Gonzaga is an all round better fighter than Kongo. Kongo had his hands down and got caught, it was a good win for Mir, but Carwin does not have the pea brain that Kongo has when it comes to strategy in the octogan, he is going knock Mir out in the first.

60 - 40 Mir

Carwin will have to knock Mir out to win, and early. Otherwise I dont think his game is as strong as Mir’s. Gonna have to go with Mir on this one. Then he can go and lose to Brock again.

Mir the next HW champ!

Mir is guna finish this in the 1st round one way or another. He is at the top of his game now and he will even beat Brock in the rubber match…Then it will be time to get Fedors fat ass over to the UFC so Mir can give him a beatdown too!

True

he’s probably the biggest disappointment in the history of the sport!! He looks like he could crush anything in his path and actually has really good stand up credentials… but then Cain through him around like a kid playing wrestlemania with a teddy bear and Frank put him on his backside with more or less one damn punch!

And then when you watch an interview… he comes across almost as stupid as James Toney.

Most technical striker is JDS. And Kongo is a can crusher. I made a killing that night. But honestly we haven’t seen enough Carwin to know what he can really do. He’s still green as fuck so i’m leaning toward Mir. But i’m not betting on this one anything could happen. Really excited to see it

Agree Timing and precision are huge

Your opponent can throw 30-40 strikes and with the little MMA gloves one good power strike can = KO. Just as huge is defending strikes and movement wich can set up counter strikes and you have to think Mir has this over Carwin.

I think Mir is going to try and finish him quickly. Not only to set an example but also so he can fight Lesnar sooner. Which could be his downfall. I think Carwin is going to come out patient and wait for Mir to bring the fight to him. But Carwin doesn’t have an iron jaw. And Mir has shown alot more power in his hands. The more I think about it the more i want to see this fight.

by bigbadbunbun on Feb 4, 2010 11:12 AM EST up reply actions

this is a fight Carwin might want to to take to the ground if

he really believes his ground game is good, Mir has added a lot of weight and muscle in a short period of time and with all the positives from this Mir will get the negatives as well and this is fatigueing. Carwin and Brock have have been their weight for a long time and are conditioned at there weight for many years. there is no way Mirs added muscle has near the conditioning that either of these guys have and I guarantee Jackson knows this and will have Carwins gameplan to wear on Mir.

"He broke tim sylvia’s arm…...So what?" – Brock Lesnar

by Puck Head on Feb 4, 2010 11:21 AM EST up reply actions

I don't know...

Brock dropped Mir in their first fight, so did Jeremy Freeman, and even a fat Brandon Vera ko’d him in 1 minute. And you can’t say it’s because he was out of shape. That has nothing to do with your capacity to take a punch. Mir is good but if Carwin connects, it’s lights out!!!!!!

Calu

by Calu on Feb 4, 2010 12:33 PM EST up reply actions

For sure

When Mir fought Vera though Mir was a lazy drunk he had a huge drinking problem. The mir now to then is worlds apart but your right Carwin has thunder strikes he may not throw many but if they connect it’s game over for anyone. I’m pumped for this fight and I’ll be cheering for Carwin mainly because I would rather see him face Brock but really I’m hoping for a good fight.

Good point.

I was trying to read all of the posts to see if someone else was going to mention this. Vera TKO’ing Mir makes me realize that Mir’s chin isn’t the greatest either. I think if Carwin connects with anything it may be a short night as well. I don’t know if Mir has one punch KO power, we know that Carwin does.

MMA Math

Carwin is a tougher match up and has a better chance agianst Brock than Mir does, but Mir is most likely going to beat Carwin.
Hoping Carwin wins just because I have already seen Mir and Brock (x2). Would rather see a fresh matchup. But, unfortunately, I dont think that will happen
