This is the first fight...
Demian’s had where I’m rooting for him; for no other reason than “THE PICKEM POOL”; Miller could tap his jaw though..

I always root for Maia. There aren't that many pure BJJ guys that are that successful anymore.
I would rather see a sick sub than a KO or TKO anyday of the week.
Agreed.
That triangle he slapped on Sonnen could be my favorite ufc submission.
Oh, yes, Meg, yes-yes yes, everything was going swimmingly for you until this. Yes, yes, THIS is the thing that will ruin your reputation, not your years of grotesque appearance, or your awkward social graces, or that Felix Ungerish way you clear your sinuses, no no no, it's THIS. Do you hear yourself talk? I might kill you tonight.
??
yeah the only BJJ guys in the top five of any weight are BJ Penn the LW champ, Jake Sheilds the strikeforce 185 champ, Nick Diaz the SF WW champ. Fedor the HW champ (wins more by sub than ko) that Frank Mir guy is pretty good oh and Big Nog….hmmm yeah BJJ has really taken a slide from when it was just Gracie.
Okay, smart ass.
Everybody has a fucking black belt these days. That doesn’t mean they use it the way Maia does or can do 1/2 the shit Maia can do. If I would have said 1 deminsional would that have made you happy?

Don't mean to white knight for BNF here but...
Technically he did say “pure BJJ”. I mean BJ’s boxing is world class, just ask Diego, and Shields is the Strikeforce 185 lb champ because their 170 division didn’t have anyone in it to fight (and now the strap belongs to his buddy and training partner Nick Diaz). I haven’t seen the rankings lately, but IMO Shields would get killed by most top 185-ers in the UFC. And the Noguera brothers also have very high level striking. Mir might be close if you take into account Big Nog’s staff infection made Mir’s hands look way better than they are.
He didn’t ssay BJJ was irrelevant. I figured he was just saying that most top guys are getting more and more well rounded as fighters so you don’t see much of the one dimensional fighter these days (understanding that Maia isn’t exactly one dimensional at this point, he just can still rely alot on BJJ because he’s so skilled at it).
Also have to agree with Dragon101 on that Triangle Maia

To finish my final thought....
I meant to say that I also loved the Triangle Maia worked on Sonnen. That was a thing of beauty, and probably my favorite UFC sub as well.

Thanks Canucklehead.
Hatters is just stiring the pot. BJ Penn is my favorite fighter, but when he beats the shit out of somebody then RNC’s them, I view that a little differently than the way Maia pretzles dudes up and plans it 7 moves ahead. That’s it.

not so fast
I agree sheilds is over rated big time. However, BJ Penn is not a world class boxer. He is 10lbs heavier than shane mosley, Maywaether, Oscar etc and in pure boxing they would kill him. The boxing in MMA is not anywhere near the boxing in plain boxing for obvious reasons, but it is also not as good as the striking in K-1. The UFC on the whole on a scale to 10 gets the following grades for the diff arts:
Wrestling 9
Jiu-jitsu-8 or 9
judo- 4
mui thai- 6 or 7
karate -2
boxing maybe a 5
The strikers are not there yet because they are still doing other arts. Once the money in ufc equals that of k-1 and some of these others you will see a lot better strikers come to ufc. Dude look at tapes of benny the jet from 25 years ago…he was 142lbs. He would KILL BJ Penn standing up. The only people in UFC that could stand and trade with k-1 guys are Anderson who came from k-1, Machida, dos santos and maybe gsp.
Out of Curiousity....
Overeem, Manhoff, Kongo, Zaromskis are all K1 level fighters who have been ko-d by MMA strikers. I realize there is a difference in striking but when the worry of the takedown is there, that level of striking gets lowered drastically, imo. I think that is what makes guys like BJ, Diaz, and Nog so dangerous. There level of boxing is at a great level where the rest of their game still doesn’t suffer. I am not sold on the K-1 guys making the mma shift. There is to many factors in mma to contend with and focus on.
Pretty much...
Their striking level within its own discipline is still rudimentary. But because they are supported by their other skillsets theyare much harder to combat. Nog and BJ for example would be good club boxers but in their current state would get chewed up by good boxers. Diaz got carved up by Noons who is not even a decent boxer. As for everyone else though their striking level is considerably below that of these guys.
If you notice now all the dominant champs have proper counterstriking. This is what makes them look so superior to other challengers in title defenses. However the things they do (parry/counter or slip/counter) are pretty much the min level of striking you need to be moderately successful in that art. Other aspects are also coming in such as working volume as opposed to accuracy. Diaz is pretty much the best volume guy in MMA right now through hundreds of shots that wear down guys. As this thing ages we will see thingsl ike this be more common. I think that if we see an influx of high level strikers then it can at least incite people to up their game just as every time there is a grappler/wrestler renaissance, everyone seems to try to shore up their defensive abilities in those arts

Agreed.
I have no idea where BJ’s striking is compared to pure boxers, so I’ll have to take your word for it guys. I should have said that BJ is a world class 155 lb MMA striker, In addition to his world class, and proven, BJJ abilities.

I'd definitely see a sick KO rather then a sub.
I prefer the knockouts to be with the hands also, so to watch a guy like Anderson Silva perform is the best i get in MMA, love standup technicians.
fresh like uhh.
Rooting for Miller to KO this guy
I dislike Maia ever since he complained about the stoppage in the fight vs Nate
He was lucky Nate didn't follow that up with some more shots
He took the higher road and walked away knowing his eyes had rolled into the back of his head.

If he gets a good striking game down
He will be the become champ after Silva vacates.

Champ?
I don’t think so felix, yes he has awsome BJJ but that just isn’t enough! His striking skills as far as I can work out are years from being good enough to fight in the competition he’s in. Nate demostrated that if he stands hell get knocked out, thats a huge problem if you can’t get the fight to the ground. He came to the ufc too early
Agreed
Demian needs to do a Jacare and work a lot on his striking, he’s got the best BJJ in MMA but that alone is not enough to beat bigger and more well rounded fighters like Nate, as their last fight proved. If Maia gets good striking then he’ll be a superb fighter, his grappling is second to none but his striking has a lot of technical flaws that are holding him back.
"If I could change my name what would it be? Jesus"
Tito Ortiz (seriously...)
miss read your quote, (if he gets a good striking game down), I agree totally, but its going to take him years
I really rooting for DM here
Oh wait, they’re both DM.
Rooting for Damian, I like Dan, but Damian’s ability to submit damn near everyone is just astounding.
Shogun lost a close decision! Everyone get crazy!
Dude his strength and conditioning looks terrible. He was doing clean"s with 85lbs, with some of the worst technique I have ever seen. Do not and I mean Do not be surprise when Damian comes to fight with a fuck up back. If people got a problem with what I said check the creds NIU grad 10 Exercise Science, CSCS Certified.
