Getting to Know Mania
Faithful Maniacs,
I have no clue how I stumbled into this article/interview - mostly I was just clicking around SBnation to see what I could see. As a long time Maniac myself, I've often wondered about the story of how UFCMania came to be MMA Mania as we know it today on SBnation. If you've often been curious about our curator like I have then hopefully you will appreciate this little gem about your friend and mine Tom Myers.
Hopefully, Tom and Jesse let this stay up as a fan post. Who knows maybe they will be even be kind enough to field a few questions if any Maniacs have some. Legitimate questions of course. Then again maybe I'm the only one interested in this post. LOL.
Full credit to the interviewer Tyler Bleszinski of SBnation. Dated Aug 29th, 2009. The article was titled: Better Know a Blogger: MMA Mania's Thomas Myers. And yes, this is a straight copy and paste job by myself.
MMA Maniais pretty much the biggest MMA site going. It's regularly updated 10-15 times a day and gets two million page views a month. The site is a behemoth in the fastest growing sport in the world.
MMA Mania was the brainchild of Thomas Myers. He's built the site into the MMA media powerhouse and with UFC 102 this evening, I figured it was time that SB Nation get formally introduced to the Huddle readership. Without further ado, let's get to know Thomas Myers a little better.
* * * * * * *
Blez: Tell me what inspired you to start MMA Mania.
Thomas Myers: At the time, there weren't very many good mixed martial arts blogs on the Web -- I could count them on one hand. So I decided to try and change that. I really had no idea what I was getting myself into – it was really just an experiment. I had recently accepted a position at a dot com, which quickly opened my eyes to the power of the Internet and what it could do. So me being a poor writer, who enjoyed watching MMA, and realizing that an opportunity existed in the market, led to the creation of Mania. Now? Forget it. Every Tom, Dick and Harry has an MMA blog. Back when Mania started it wasn't really the cool thing to do. It was perfect timing.
Blez: How do you feel about MMA as a sport now as opposed to where it was say 10 years ago?
Myers: It's night and day. And not just because it has become more popular and accepted over time. Fighters today are among the best athletes on the planet. Their collective dedication, hard work and sacrifice is second to none. It's clear on fight night just how far the athletes have taken this sport. No longer is it about boxing vs. jiu-jitsu or wrestling vs. karate -- it's about true, well-rounded mixed martial artists. Of course, there are some one-trick ponies still out there, but for the most part, the evolution of the fighters over the past decade is remarkable.
Blez: Do you think it's good for the sport that one organization (UFC) has really emerged as the dominant player? Or is that just the natural course for any sport?
Myers: Dana White and the UFC know what they're doing. It's in the hands of good people who have deep pockets. Competition is always nice because it means we as fans are treated to more fights. But long-term having the UFC as the "major league" does indeed seem like the natural course for mixed martial arts. And I don't think 95 percent of fans will complain about that. The UFC has a recipe for success and a reputation for putting on great events.
Blez: Do you have a favorite fighter right now? If you do, tell me why.
Myers: I have a favorite type of fighter -- guys who can talk the talk and walk the walk. BJ Penn comes to mind. Nick Diaz is awesome at it, too. I'd also never miss a Chris Leben fight. These are the types of fighters who market and sell their fights better than anyone. Then they come in and kick ass ... most of the time. They should give lessons to other fighters. It doesn't even matter if they guy they are fighting isn't top-level or not. I still want to see it go down. A big part of MMA is entertainment. Some fighters either don't know this and/or don't care. Of course, some fighters take it too far, including UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, maybe even Tito Ortiz to an extent, but even still fans tune in to see them fight.
Blez: What has been the best MMA event you've seen?
Myers: Pride 33: "The Second Coming." It was one of the last events for the Japanese-based promotion before getting purchased by the UFC parent company, Zuffa. So that could also subconsciously factor into my decision. It was also electric from start to finish. A blood-soaked Nick Diaz pulled off one of the craziest submissions (gogoplata) ever seen (at the time) over arguably the top lightweight (at the time) in the world, Takanori Gomi. Before the finish it was like watching rock 'em sock 'em robots. Another under dog, Dan Henderson, scored one of the most memorable knockouts ever over Wanderlei Silva in the main event to capture the middleweight belt -- a title the "Axe Murderer" held for more than five years. Shogun Rua knocked out Alistair Overeem. Hayato Sakurai knocked out Mac Danzig. Sokoudjou surprised everyone when he defeated Antonio Rogerio Nogueria, by, you guessed it, knockout. It was just an absolutely sick night of MMA. I miss Pride more because of events like "The Second Coming."
Blez: Did you play the UFC 2009 Undisputed game and if so, what did you think?
Myers: If Jim Bankoff would give me a vacation, then I'd probably have more time to play games. But that just doesn't appear to be in the cards anytime soon. Kidding aside, I really don't have the time. I'm tempted because the reviews and reactions on MMAmania are for the most part glowing. So, from the feedback the I hear and read, it's killer. But running a site that is on 24/7, 365 days a week, having two children under the age of five and working full-time on top of all of that doesn't leave much room for Playstation. Hopefully, when things slow down and my boy is a bit older, I can enjoy things like that. For now I'll stick to blogging, not gaming. It's more practical at this point in my life.
Blez: Describe the community over at MMA Mania and what a new user might expect if they were to just join.
Myers: Tough question. There is a wide range. We have loyal Maniacs who have been with us since Day One when I was a lonely blogger praying for just one comment. Now we have tens of thousands a day, literally, and comments can balloon up to 300 or more on just one post. We look to a lot of those original members to try and educate the newer additions. Some things you do, and some things you don't. We have an unwritten code of conduct that most are able to adapt to and follow. Sometimes we have to intervene and speak up, but for the most part, it's all good. Guys and gals know how to push buttons and test each other. I think the important thing to remember is not just to hop in a blog and say "first" or "WAR FEDOR." That's dumb. And a lot of times people will get chewed out for making pointless remarks like that. My best advice is to make thoughtful comments and share ideas that are on topic. In the process, you'll learn from others in our community and even make friends. In fact, just last month we had a crew of MMAmania readers coordinate a trip to see UFC 101 in Philadelphia in a luxury box. They did it all themselves through our site. And they never would have met each other if it wasn't for MMAmania. That, to me, is what our community is all about.
Blez: What's your favorite aspect of running MMA Mania? And conversely, your least favorite aspect?
Myers: The best part is giving MMA fans a platform to share their ideas and hear their passion. It amazes me that thousands of people log on every day and hit our site numerous times just to see what's new and talk about it with other fans half a world away. It's crazy and it never gets old. Especially when I consider four or five years ago I really just started the site on a whim with no real idea how the Internet worked or what I was getting myself into. Now it's an extremely popular online destination for MMA. It's a big responsibility. People rely on us. People get mad if it's a slow news day and we post eight items rather than our traditional 10-15. So that has to be my least favorite -- the pressure to constantly create new content. It's a blessing and a curse. I can't just wake up one morning and head to the beach for the day. I have to plan everything, and if I can't find someone to cover, it's ultimately my responsibility to ensure there is coverage. It's non stop. I don't think people realize that. My wife certainly didn't, especially when Mania started to take off, so it created lots of problems on the home front. I thank her for sticking by my side and seeing this through, considering I'm sometimes chained to my lap top from sunrise to sunset. The good news is it's much better now. With time I've been able to create a system that frees me up more to do other things with my family. I also have Jesse Holland, our managing editor, who can now handle all the day-to-day responsibilities without me micro-managing his every move. That's a huge help.
Blez: What do you expect for UFC 102 tonight? Give me some predictions or expectations.
Myers: It's history. Couture and Nogueira are legends. It would have been nice to see this fight happen maybe a bit sooner in their careers, but beggars can't be choosers. I expect a great main event. A smart main event between two tacticians. First person to make a mistake loses. That's how I see it going, anyway. Then in the co-main event you have two hard-hitting 205 pounders, Keith Jardine and Thiago Silva. Both guys are hungry and coming off losses. I expect fireworks. And the middleweight match up between Demian Maia vs. Nate Marquardt is one of those old school classic match ups. Maia is all jiu-jitsu, but there is likely no one better than him in MMA today in that respect. He chokes guys out and doesn't even break a sweat. Marquardt is a gigantic middleweight who has the size and power to toss Maia from pillar to post. He's also more well-rounded. So what do I expect? I expect the unexpected, because that what this sport is all about.
Blez: Tell me something about yourself that your readership that might surprise your readers.
Myers: Despite what they may think, I appreciate them all, even if they drive me nuts about moderation or point out small mistakes. Mania wouldn't be what it is today without our readership. So even though it sounds corny, thanks, Maniacs. I've also only really met my right-hand man, Jesse Holland, once ... and it was earlier this year. Most people think we are like childhood friends, but in reality, I recruited him online several years ago and that's how our partnership grew. We cover separate events and live 3,000 miles apart, so it's not like we bump into each other often. I tell people that and most of them are totally shocked. But if you ever met Jesse in person, you might understand the reason for that.
Blez: Thanks so much for your time. We love to have MMA Mania and you as a part of SB Nation.
Myers: Likewise, now get us on the platform already!

Something I've always wondered..
When was UFCmania born? Was there an official “go live” date?
Congrats to everyone who picked Robbie over MM. He took an a$$ whoopin but played a "risky" game plan like a fiddle. H O L Y S H 1 T that was an insane finish - Melvin was completly waxed. 2/3 on the night. Crap.
Nice find, BZ.

definitely a good read!~ thanks zino, and yourwelcome mmamania!~
i have been coming to this site for over 3 years!~ back in the ufcmania days..
the only people that were here before me that i can remember are violentmike, john, pw, luppers, toelock, da spyder… some of them still post[pw,vm,john] and some of them i havn’t seen in years..
i used to post under a different handle back when i first came here and have been using stinky~fingers for about 2 years, or so..
i remember when i first came across this wonderful site just randomly googling info about mma.. came across an article that lead me to ufcmania, and i was hooked..
back then, da spyder was the top commenter with 900 posts or something.. i remember watching violentmike and him usually went back and forth on the ‘top commenters’ list on the sidebar of the site.. eventually violentmike took the top spot for a while, untill john passed him and rained ‘top’ untill mania stopped keeping the top comments listed..
just curious, but im somewhat interested to know who had the most comments on mania on the last day before the jump to SB.. if mmamania or jeese could post a list that would be cool..
i am the mighty tighty whitey and im smuggling plums!~

I’ve seen people request that as well in the past, but it always fall upon deaf ears. I think we should take hint from the article that Mania is too busy…

Yeah, nice find. Just seeing the UFCmania name brings back memories. This has got to be by far the best blog style mma site on the net for both information and intelligent conversation. Fantastic job by all the Mania “execs” and contributors. Thanks for the perfect place to kill time and get up to speed on the world of mma.

Leban??? Suprised by that answere! PEOPLE: REC THIS SO IT STAYS AROUND LONGER THAN 10 FN MINUTES!
Nice BZ.
Mania is the man. Best MMA website by far. I won’t even go on another one because it will all end up here anyways.
I really want to know how much money they make for this little website. Feel free to post a copy of your 2009 W-2 in a reply, thanks. ;-)
I'm the same way
This is the only place I get my MMA news and the only place I post when I can get a few spare minutes at work. Last year my company must have noticed the all the times I was visiting and blocked the website…I was very devastated but since they’ve relaxed the internet policies and I can go back to enjoying my Mania. I like all the regulars here and I enjoy a good debate. I wish I had more time to post m thoughts on a daily basis but I chime in when I can.
Nice find…I also was one of those people that thought Jesse and Mania were close friends…but I should have known that the only friends Jesse has are avatars online…and even they only pretend to like him…lol.

people say I’m kind of creepy in person. I just stare at them and don’t talk. That’s such a terrible thing? I thought silence was golden…

I’ve known mania’a name is Tom for years as I know things (dirt) on uncle Jesse, but even the pain in the ass I am, I would never break “the code.” that has to be the best post of the year! I understand why it was never on mania, it would be uber lame to post an interview about you on your website, but am very happy you found this. I get a daily dose.
FYI – I looked everywhere for a UFCMania logo to use in this post. No luck.

Not sure where, but I have seen that name when I was randomly rolling thru another MMA blog

You are banned from Bloody Elbow.
You can browse the blog, but you can’t participate.
Sorry, you don’t get to call the staff “lame” and complain about how we moderate. It isn’t that kind of site. Goodbye
Kev, everyone was warned about dogging on BE. SB Nation can stop you from posting on all of their sites if you continue to discuss BE.
We gotta be nice to BE from now on.
Fact: TUF has produced more UFC Champions than the purchase of PRIDE has.
he mentioned BE, not me!
If he knows that we don’t like BE, why come in here with that shit? Ban him from coming here and instigating us. Believe me, I know about the ban, I got a special email because it was just assumed that I was involved in you guys’s troll-a-thon at BE…like I have time for that, I’ve been too busy winning poker tournaments to even post on mania, never mind BE!

Anton -or anyone else similar - my last comment on this subject
Why in the hell post something like that in a thread posted by a guy (me) who was banned by your site which i was told you moderate on? am i wrong? why was i banned? because i called out a couple of people trying to steer traffic away from Mania while they are on Mania. Or saw that they borrowed ideas without giving proper consideration to the orginal owner of the idea. Sorry if I pee’d in your sandbox.
And then You just did it again! You posted something that takes us away from Mania inside of a post appreciating MMAMania. If i am not welcome to comment on BE than don’t post a link that opens the door for me to do so. Judging people is not something I do well – clearly we don’t have a fit here anyway.
Truth was, I don’t know a damn thing about BE or Luke and I guess we now know what happend the first time I tried to find out.
I read it – the interview is not great. Seemed more than a little self indulgent
Agree with David and oh yeah…
what Kev said.
I bet against both Paulo Thiago and Mark Coleman:
- THiago impressed the sh1t out of me.
- Coleman you owe me $20 bucks.
Applauds
I’m also getting pretty sick of people from other sites trying to steer traffic away from here, the worst are the fanposts with half an article that try to get you to click on them to read the rest of it. The fact that so many people on this site have been banned from BE for no real reason is pathetic in my opinion.
BE moderators, you’re welcome to run your site as you want but I’d much prefer to just comment on this blog with a great group of people who provide witty banter and clever comments on the greatest sport today on a site ran by a dedicated group of people who allow everyone to have their say and don’t ban people just because they can.

- steering traffic from mania? A link that makes you open the door to comment on BE? That was a link to blog.sbnation.com or The Blog Huddle, not BE. It’s one of the main SBN sites that also made the profile on Mania.. What would I, or anyone get from people going there? What would I get from anything really?
- I’m really not into this “Blog war” or competition or any of that stuff you guys seem to be obsessed about, since I just love MMA. There happens to be multiple MMA sister sites in SBN so I frequent all of them often, especially Mania and BadLeftHook. I didn’t even know that you, the guy who made this fanpost is banned from BE. I don’t even know your situation, and to be honest, I really don’t care. This was a great fanpost, and it was the first time I read an interview which profiles the guy who runs one of my favorite MMA sites, and since there was also a similar post on Luke, I thought that maybe someone (not those who blindly hate on BE of course) would also be interested.
- And if someone thinks that’s me trying to steal traffic so more people would click on “blog huddle” then that’s weird… and if someone thinks, that I’m trying to “instigate things” and get you guys “banned on SBN” then that’s even weirder. In fact, I was being nice, and I was hoping to maybe get past this rivalry things you guys seem to have. We all love MMA, and I really don’t get why there has to be some issues between two sister sites who cover MMA well.

dont compare your site to mania!
we have great discussions all day everyday, and no one has ever been banned for disagreeing with mania! Maybe you’re OK, maybe not, but to ban people for saying that idea or opinion is lame or wrong is just laughable. go back to BE and be sure to agree with that homo brent or you may be outta of a job!

Agreed on not being into the blog war. I couldn't care less.
I missed “The Blog Huddle” – i see that. It was late – way after 109 ended and early in the AM, I did think it was BE which I now see it wasn’t. ANYWAY… The comment was based on several events before this one.
Anton – you seem like a good guy. I appreciate you reply. The major difference between us is that I don’t visit other mma sites and consider Mania my online home for MMA: Hence the protectionism.
Like I said… BE and I are not a fit. I can tell. After reviewing both interviews I know I am already on the right site.
But your welcome to blog here to add to Mania like everyone else.
I bet against both Paulo Thiago and Mark Coleman:
- THiago impressed the sh1t out of me.
- Coleman you owe me $20 bucks.
What blog war?
Let me recap for everyone involved :
Some posters joked about the censorship that BE practices.
Other posters that were banned from BE came over to Mania and complained about being kicked out of BE.
Some Mania posters claimed that they tried to get into BE just to see if those censorship accusations were valid ( in a joking manner and NOT to start a “blog war”, which is fucking stupid anyway ).
Unfortunately, those censorship accusations are true as some Mania posters confirmed that they were “denied” before posting a single thought.
It was a silly joke that someone (not the Mania posters) took too seriously.
It goes without saying that the regular posters here on Mania love this site because Jesse and Mania treat us like adults.
Most of the regular posters here are grown men and women who have better things to do than ruin a good thing here on Mania.
Believe it or not, its not a “war” for us either.

sorry OJ but "Truth"
we laughed at a few hypothetical scenarios, Mania told us to stop, we did.

and while we're speaking hypothetically
what harm would’ve come from it

imo a good blog is made up of good poster
maybe I’m wrong, but here at Mania, (and I’m not dogging BE in this instance) little cencorship is needed due to the tightly knit group of regulars who moderate aggressive posters themselves…very few people who are new to this site get away with name calling etc. for long as we tend to “stick together” and bring them aboard with rather than ban them

DAMN OJR and MAC
I had a whole response ready to post and then guys said it better than I did.
I will 2nd and 3rd that.
I bet against both Paulo Thiago and Mark Coleman:
- THiago impressed the sh1t out of me.
- Coleman you owe me $20 bucks.
I will speak openly here just so you guys know what happened.
I read MMA Mania all day. I sit and refresh the site looking for things that need to be posted on the SBNation.com/mma hub.
People had problems with BE, said they were going to start some sort of troll attack on Bloody Elbow and would use it as an “initiation” for new members. Several other people said they wanted in.
Then, all of the people who said “I want in” opened new accounts at BE and bragged that they were going to have fun once the memberships became active. Some of the posters were openly explaining that they were going to sign up for multiple accounts on BE and troll and did so as well.
So yes, these members were immediately banned without their memberships becoming active. It’s pointless for us to allow these memberships to become active just to mess with the site.
I can promise you the same actions would be taken by any blogs on the SB Nation network. It wasn’t like we were banning accounts simply because people are members at MMA Mania, it was limited to those who were openly speaking about taking actions (no matter how pointless or harmless you may have found a “troll attack”) against BE. It’s a sort of policy across most of the SBN sites to just kill these kind of things before they lead to a situation which gets out of hand.
The last thing I want as someone who works with all of these sites is an influx of intentional shit-stirring from Mania resulting in BE members feeling like they should do something in return, and then members of say…Watch Kalib Run deciding that it sounds fun and that they should jump in. There are a lot of politics behind the scenes with a network of sites like SBN and we took the steps that we felt were best to keep everyone as sane as possible.
Hopefully that clears up a lot for everyone, and I’ll step out of the way now so that focus can shift back to the interview with Thomas.

fair enough...no harm intended
Maybe you should have just interupted upon coming across those comments immediately to ensure we knew the rules. In honesty, I can speak for many here when I say that i don’t have the ambition to plan anything like that…

I know people won’t be thrilled with my posting anything here. But I just want to throw this out there.
Mania and BE are on the same team. BE is not trying to steal traffic from Mania, and Mania isn’t trying to steal traffic from BE. As long as you guys are hanging out on SB Nation blogs the world is good in our eyes. My entire job on SBNation.com is to help get clicks for ALL our combat sites, that includes Mania, Gals, WKR, 4Real, BE, BLH..etc. Which is why you see me linking to Mania very regularly.
I’m 100% cool with you guys not liking how BE moderates, I’m glad you have an alternative on SBN that handles things how you want.
I just wanted to finally go ahead and point out that we’re all on the same team, so this pointless “war” is running in counter to what makes any sort of sense. I work with the Mania guys on a daily basis doing what I can to do things in the best interest of this site. This is not a “war” that exists for the actual people who run these sites.

There is no "war" first of all. That's an overstatement
But I get what your saying about the traffic steering thing. After I was pre banned from BE anything BE just became spam to me.
Being a long time Mania guy there is still stuff about SBN that I don’t know the details of.
I’m 100% cool with you guys not liking how BE moderates, I’m glad you have an alternative on SBN that handles things how you want.
I am glad as well.
I do think it’s cool that you posted this comment to help keep everything in the clear instead of being left for individual interpretation. Now if you could just explain that damn banned before you post thing. Nah….let’s move on.

why did I get banned?
I disagreed and said it was a lame stance. Which at the time it was. not that I care, but it says it right in the note sent to me…thats why we dont go to BE, if you disagree with the almighty Brent, you get banned!
………………
You are banned from Bloody Elbow.
You can browse the blog, but you can’t participate.
Sorry, you don’t get to call the staff "lame" and complain about how we moderate. It isn’t that kind of site. Goodbye

That's incorrect Nate....
Kev’s banning was from well before that situation.
I don’t want to get into the particulars of his banning here as this isn’t the place for it.

Yeah, let me just add in that Thomas and Jesse and the gang deserve a ton of respect for the work that they have done with Mania over the years. And I’m sorry if the above conversation took away at all from them getting a healthy dose of love from everyone.

I don’t get why I was banned, but it is what it is and now that mania has this format I would NEVER post over there anyways. keep up the good work you mma nazi! lol
I've had my moments
You have any idea what kind of numbers we did when I single-handedly started the entire GSP-Matt Serra feud back in ’07? All from one little word. It was bonkers. They were sourcing us on ESPN, Canadian TV, the works. Nuts.
