Ooooooo

Good fight; Kenny wins though; would love for Gomi to somehow pull it off just for some more Comp for BJ but I don’t think it’s happening.

there must be someone whose skill level lies in between Kenny's and BJ's

Fedor once bet NASA he could survive re-entry without a spacesuit.

On July 19th, 1999, a naked Fedor re-entered the earth's atmosphere, streaking over 14 states and reaching a temperature of 3000 degrees. An embarrassed NASA publically claimed it was a meteor, and still owes him a beer.

Let's hope he shows up

and sadly I dont think its mr.gomi. the only person i see having a chance at beating kenny would prob. be gray, but i dont want to see gray hump kenny for 15 mins, cause we all know he wouldnt be able to stand with kenny.

Grey

Kenny vs Grey would go pretty much like Kenny vs Guida. Kenny’s takedown defense has improved a lot since training with GSP.

I think training with GSP is going to keep elevating the game of Florian and I don’t see anyone stopping him from getting another crack at Penn. I think Kenny’s game plan was the biggest reason he wasn’t competitive against Penn. All those takedown attempts tired him out way too much. I think he’d do better than anyone else at LW standing up with BJ and using his strikes more to set up takedowns instead of pinning him against the fence and wasting energy.

No way Kenny ever beats B.J.!

Even if by some chance he could beat him standing ( which I can’t ever see) than B.J. just takes him down and subs him.

by MBOW on Feb 3, 2010 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe not

but if the Kenny that dismantled Guida keeps looking better and better then I think he can be more competitive against Penn a second time around.

more competitive....yes I agree, but

I can’t see anyone beating B.J. at 155. Can’t KO, sub or cut him!

by MBOW on Feb 3, 2010 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

terrible fight at this point in time!

this is no way to welcome someone with the potential of Gomi!

Gomi vs. Spencer or sam stout would be a much6 more appropriate octagon debut!

I want to see how TYson vs. Florian would play out.

Tyson/Florian is MUCH better...Kenny/Gomi just seems to be a no-win situation for the UFC...they're going to lose a contender

Agreed

Nice match making John…I don’t think Gomi wins this fight and it’s no way to try and promote this kind of new comer to the octagon. Gomi should be set up with a striker with little to no chance of having the fight hit the canvas.

Griffin/Florian would be very interesting fight but I still think Kenny takes that one but I highly doubt Kenny can finish Griffin.

not exactly the nicest welcoming party for gomi. spencer would be a perfect fight for gomi or even stevenson. guess they’re pissed gomi didnt come over sooner and tooled around in japan

he has really improved since joining Jackson’s and is still very young…I’d like to see him rematch Kenny

Not sure why you would think this is a terrible fight. The is a great fight between two title contenders for free. And i think Gomi has a great shot if he puts in srious training.

by PRZ on Feb 3, 2010 11:12 AM EST up reply actions

It’s not a terrible fight, it’s a terrible first fight in the UFC for Gomi. He needs at least one, maybe two tune-up fights against guys with recognizable names but whose skill sets play into Gomi’s strengths before getting in against Kill-Flo or BJ.

Maybe Aoki could sneak a sub in there on Kenny; but yea..

Kenny’s kinda where Rich Franklin was at in the MW division; he can beat anybody but the Champ and it kinda sucks having him in there knocking off all the contenders.

ummm are we forgetting something guys?

I’m gonna get razzed for this but I’m looking forward to Big Country’s fight more than Florians. :S

I really hope he can get passed Struve’s tall ass. I still kind of give Beuntello that fight. Nelson has looked surprisingly good and has personality for days. Hilarious man, who takes things very lightly, yet is proving to be very talented still. Hope he continues to improve cause he’s the funniest guy in MMA.

Meh; I could care less; Struve might do something in a couple years but right now...

He’s mid level; Nelson will get owned by Valasquez, Nog, Rothwell (again), Mir, Brock, Kongo, Herring (wtf happened to Heath anyway??) and Gonzaga. Given the height/reach diff here, I expect to see a lot of hugging in this one.

Struve for the Upset. This is a bad match up for Roy.

Struve has some decent stand up, watching him fight you see how damn easy it is for him to get his knee in peoples faces. He also punches and kicks from angles and distances that other people just can’t. Landed a big uppercut on Buentello from just about across the arena. Roy’s stand up isn’t really anything special, And I doubt he’ll get near Struve’s chin. Unless ofcourse Struve jumps chin first into Roy’s fist like he did with Buentello. Roy won’t stand with him long before wrapping those long legs up in a takedown, but don’t be surprized if Roy ends up getting submitted himself. Struve is actually somewhat of a submission specialist. 14 of his 19 wins have come that way, he’s subbed a hell of a lot more people than Roy has.
Even if Roy does get on top of him and start landing stuff from top position. We all know from the Stojnic fight that Stefan can take some real punishment and still keep calm and look for the sub.
I see Struve finishing Roy.

I don't mind either way, I like both guys

But for the reasons mentioned above I think Struve will have the edge on his feet and off of his back. Don’t know what Roy has for him. If anybody finishes it it’ll be Struve, either that or Roy might win a decision if he can stay on top without getting tapped.

I think Big Country has too much experience at this point for Struve. In 2-3 years Struve will be a monster at the upper limits of the weight division, but right now Nelson takes him, probably by GnP.

by P-Dub on Feb 3, 2010 10:23 AM EST up reply actions

Struve has 22 fights19-3 Roy has 18 fights 14-4

arguably Roy has lost to better people than Struve, but I don’t think that says much in terms of experience gained it just means that Roy has had the opportunity at big name fights (which he lost) and Struve hsan’t. Plus Struve has fought all over the world against all kinds of people in all kinds of places, where as Roy has rarely fought outside the states. Roy’s form hasn’t been great in his last few pro fights either. before Schaub he hadn’t won a fight since may 08. Plus Struve is a TOUGH kid. Just take a look at my profile pic. Plus you saw Buentello land his biggest baddest punch and Struve got up within a second and carried on fighting.Struve takes this!!!

why they put gomi against florian is beyond me...

as we have seen in the past, the octagon debut for anyone is not easy!! and to make gomi a main event right away..dumb for someone who is a potential contender. he has to lose to kenny (who has miles of octagon experience), then rebound….they could have put him against a lower level fighter to start IMO.
and if kenny wins, what does it mean? nothing! he cant get another title shot anytime soon so this is a waste

I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was.

Another Card

To prove Kenny Florian is the second best lightweight.

by theworldismine on Feb 3, 2010 10:51 AM EST reply actions

Not a good fight for Gomi debut. Florian is a top contender. However, if the Japanese wins, he’ll go straight to fight BJ Penn. Nelson vs Struve also is a good match-up. Very good card for a Fight Night event.

Gomi is getting Florian because BJ Penn won’t stick around in 155 while Gomi has multiple tune-up fights. They throw the former Pride lightweight champion to KenFlo, if he wins, he gets BJ, if he loses, BJ goes to 170, I reckon. I am also banned at BE! Cheers!
