Strikeforce returns to CBS for 'Saturday Night Fights' on April 17 in Nashville
Strikeforce has finally locked in a date for their next CBS "Saturday Night Fights" event as Scott Coker and Co. travel to Nashville, Tennessee for a televised brouhaha from the Sommet Center on April 17.
Just don't plan on seeing Fedor Emelianenko strutting his stuff on free TV.
"The Last Emperor" is currently negotiating for a spot on the next Showtime offering when Strikeforce pits him against jiu-jitsu wizard Fabricio Werdum at some point in May. The good news is there's still the Dan Henderson vs. Jake Shields middleweight title fight to fall back on.
Also expected for the promotion's first-ever trip to "Music City" is a light heavyweight grudge match between breakout stars Gegard "The Dreamcatcher" Mousasi and Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal.
Strikeforce is expected to release the official CBS fight card on Monday, March 1.
While nothing is official at this time, Sherdog.com reports that Herschel Walker is penciled in to make his sophomore appearance inside the cage against an opponent to be named.
That's called the ratings game.
"Saturday Night Fights" did reasonably well when it debuted with "Fedor vs. Rogers" last November, averaging 4.04m viewers and winning its time period among adults 18-34 and men 18-34. The main event saw a peak of 5.46 million viewers, placing it in the top ten of most watched live fights in U.S. history.
Stay tuned to MMAmania.com in the coming days for further developments surrounding the Strikeforce/CBS trip to Nashville.

Sink or swim time
Henderson vs. Shields is a dangerous fight to have headlining a CBS card. It has the potential to be one of the most boring fights we’ve seen in quite some time. If they produce sub standard ratings it might be the end of Strikeforce on CBS.
People are still high on Dan’s KO of Bisping and forget that “Decision” Dan shows up more often than “Dangerous” Dan. And Jake “the snuggie” Shields is no stranger to being involved in boring fights.
horrible chocie for a headliner given the position SF is in right now
walker will bring some ratings but his last fight was haed to watch and if fans stick around this isnt the main event that will keep them coming back, wonder why they didnt keep fedor on this card?
Bas Rutten: He has a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Stephen Quadros: Yes, well many of the fighters have a black belt.
Bas Rutten: Yes, but in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you cant buy your belt like in say, Tae Kwon Do.
Stephen Quadros: Do you have any belts?
Bas Rutten: I have a brown belt in Tae Kwon Do.

wrong!
Dan wont be taken down by a glorified welterweight, and will have no respect for sheilds striking n punchin power. Similar to the Bisping fight he will just go in there looking to take his head off.
Sad to say it from an mma purist such as myself, but they need to book Hershel vs. conseco as a draw on cbs after sheilds stunk up the joint last time, and Fedor not fighting til showtime. Its important that the growing SF gets ratings in especially on CBS…and I dont think Hershel against a no name mma bum will cut it again. bring on Canseco!
How did Shields stink up the joint last time? Am I the only one who enjoyed that fight?
And SF will lose my support if they put on a fight as pathetic as Walker-Canseco on network TV. It would make MMA a laughing stock. Hendo-Shields and Mousasi-Mo should be enough to headline this card, they are both very good fights and should bring in great ratings. SF don’t need to resort to the ultimate freakshow on this card when they have 2 great title fights, even without Fedor.

Dana White, proving that he's clueless about Australian sports, has never heard of Fedor and is still trying to hype up TUF 10.
let me break it down
I enjoyed the fight because I know the ins and outs of grappling, but Im sure that casual fans hated it and CBS is a huge platform to influence millions of casual fans…also dont underestimate how much influence cBS and showtime have in match makings and fight cards…why else isnt the UFC with any major network? UFC doesnt need networks to survive…A growing organization like strikeforce cant function at this point without networks….I would be mortified if the UFC did this…but some of the crap that they do is just as bad, and they dont need to, which makes it even worse.
I am a big fan of japanese mma, and have been watching it for ever, that although I dont enjoy these fights..I have learned to tolerate them….and Canseco is one of the top 5 human beings on earth that I would like to see get beat up on tv… It would be a better fight then Kimbo/tank Abbot and we all watched that. WTF, if this is what they gotta do to survive, I dont like it….but I understand it!
you do realize that every single person in America will watch Cabseco get beat up on free tv? i mean everyone!!!!!!!!!! Now that I think about it…the smartest thing that SF could do would be to have Fedor/werdum as main event, with Conseco/walker on main card…exposing ALL OF AMERICA to THE GOD!!!! (Jay rolls his eyes!) lol
Fedor will not fight on the CBS card in April. He most likely will appear on Showtime’s card in May. I believe this is due to an injury or re-injury during a recent Somdo event in which Fedor participated but withdrew after two matches.
Yea, I think it was a hand injury not sure though.

Balls to the casual fans
Seriously I thought that it was a really entertaining grappling fight and if casual fans didn’t like it and only wanted to see a brawl then they picked the wrong sport. I don’t understand why people that dislike grappling watch MMA when there are dedicated sports to striking, if I hated half of MMA then I’d just watch boxing and kickboxing instead. I doubt that fans like that would ever become regular viewers of the product anyway.
As for Herschel-Canseco I would be ashamed to call myself an MMA fan if a major promotion had that fight promoted on a major card. How could anyone take MMA seriously if they start promoting real life celebrity deathmatches? That fight would devalue the whole show and sport no matter who else was on the card, even Fedor.

Agreed!
Agreed! Its sad that those words are coming from, Mr. I hate the UFC for doing this and that,
I will never “buy” another UFC if they sign _…..blah blah.
I h6old th6e UFC to a different standard!
All they need to do is act like a real sport, and run their organization/match making on merit, and they would still all make millions! They dont need to resort to freakshow fights!
apples and oranges dude!
SF is an Orange?
Shouldn’t the “#2 MMA Org” be moving the sport forward?
We already get enough freakshow fights from Japan. The sport doesn’t need any more.
I feel that SF is just trying to cash in and not trying to help the sport. Ruining potential matchups for the UFC. The sooner they disappear the better it is going to be for everyone. The only good thing about SF is that they reveal fighters who just want to pad their records and not fight the best. “Looks at Henderson”
/Strikeforce rant over
Henderson wanted to fight the best and wasn't allowed. He left the UFC because Dana wouldn't allow him to fight Silva.
I’m not a fan of the guy at all, but if you think he ran to SF to pad his record you are misinformed. Hopefully after he beats the consciousness out of Shields he will fight Mousasi at LHW. HE went to SF to fight better people than the Micheal Bispings of the world.
Also SF is an orange. They are the minor leagues when it comes to MMA in North America. They need to do whatever they can do to survive. You will see a lot of uneven fights and freakshows at SF. They won’t stay afloat without them. John is right Walker vs. Jose would make a ton of money. I’d love to see Jose Canseco knocked out live. That Dream fight he had was a joke, I want to see some damage done to that pin cushion.
JasonFahQ is a troll.
Could have been card of the year but
With no Fedor is just a solid a event, not great.

im such a fedor lover its hard not to be disappointed
…but this is far from risky. The Moussasi vs Mo fight will not be slow or boring. So as a Co main it can save the show. And I still don’t think Hendo/Jake will be either.

Disappointed there's no Fedor
But still super excited this is in my backyard! Looking forward to both of these fights.
