UFC 110: Ultimate Fighting Championship is trendy!
For all you internet savvy Maniacs out there, this screenshot, taken early Sunday morning, may look familiar. It is the be-all and end-all of internet popularity known as Google trends.
Fun little fact -- 70% of all internet sessions start with a search. Considering that information, it is easy to see why this list of hot searches and topics is important in the general scope of Mixed Martial Arts interest across the world.
When UFC 110 ranks above the man behind what is arguably the biggest sports scandal in history, and a relative no name to casual MMA fans like George Sotiropoulos is the eighth most searched topic on Google, well, lets just say that it's pretty darn impressive.

Biggest Sports Scandal in History?
I hate to call you out on it and I get your point but this is a poor description. Tiger’s infidelity is not a sports scandal. Its just a scandal (period). When I think of sports scandals, I think of the Black Sox, Pete Rose, Steroids even Greasegate, not Tiger’s sex addiction. Sorry, it just isn’t a “sports scandal.”

As an owner of an MBA in sports business from Georgetown University...
I’m gonna have to tell you that you’re kinda wrong here. A sports scandal does not just relate to on-field issues. Quite frankly, most sports scandals have to do with athletes and their transgressions off the field. Kobe Bryant’s adultery ordeal = sports scandal. Mike Tyson’s rape conviction = sports scandal. Duke lacrosse team = sports scandal. Tiger Woods’s transformation from being the most popular athlete in the world to being the biggest man whore in the world = biggest sports scandal in history.

The Tiger Woods affair also has the largest fiscal consequences to date. There was an analysis put together that suggested all of his sponsors losses combined to a sum total $12billion US dent in cash flow. Not to mention CNN is running this daily…
TO consider “greasegate” above this is laughable.
Not "Above" Anything
Greasegate was more of a sarcastic reference but that’s not the point. I appologize about the harshness of my last post which seems to have been censored. But, I can still use greasegate. That was an issue causing a scandal (as evidenced by the commentary on here and other websites) specifically related and going directly to the fairness of the sport and how it is played. Thus, it is a “sports” scandal. The Tiger Woods Scandal (more appropriately referenced) has absolutely nothing to do with the sport of golf. Sure, it changes the competitive level of the game without him on the course, which mind you, has nothing to do with the sport or the sport’s rules as his absence is self-inflicted, but it has nothing to do with the game whatsoever and thus, is not a sports scandal. It just isn’t. I can’t see any merit whatsoever to any argument that it does (if there is one, please inform me). In my opinion, to be properly defined as a “sports” scandal, the issue causing the public outcry (which is really all a scandal is) has to have something (anything) to do with the sport itself. That could be management, ownership, point shaving, gambling, PED’s, etc.

Thanks professor BoomGoesTheDynamite. I'll go let my professors at Gtown, the VP of AOL Sports and a General Counsel of the NFLPA, know that they're wrong.
by James Kimball on Feb 22, 2010 5:20 PM EST up reply actions
Seriously?
I repeat the subject of my last post which for whatever reason was intercepted because it may have hurt somebody’s feelings. Look man, if anything, I am sure your education at G-town has taught you, as any proper education should, to question things. This is why your citation of an MBA and the admittedly prestigious titles of your professors, while impressive, are meaningless to this or any other debate. You argument, as I said before, lack any sort of logical reasoning. It is conclusory, as is stating that credentials somehow give any credence to the volition of a statement. In my humble opinion, I laid out some fairly strong points to assert my conclusion that scandals involving an athlete’s personal life, whether they be drugs, sex or whatever, are not appropriately described as sports scandals.
Also, just because your professors discuss such scandals in a sports business curriculum does not make them sports scandals. Clearly, the financial and business implications of the type being experienced by Tiger right now, have far reaching consequences in his business related endeavors. And, managing those issues surely takes some sports business experience, i.e. endorsement deals and reputation. But these things, while acquired in large part because of the athletes achievements on the field, are not really “sports” issues. Sports issues are limited to the game itself, how it is played and the rules by which it is governed. Now, you have yet to entertain any invitation to offer any substance behind your assertion. Perhaps I should ask your professors who, under your logic, have never, nor could ever be wrong about anything related to their field. Do yourself a favor and stop being so subservient. Think outside the box a little bit. I am sure you are a smart guy. Don’t let your small mindedness prevent you from reaching your potential.
by BoomGoesTheDynamite! on Feb 22, 2010 5:39 PM EST up reply actions
You're right. Just because they discuss them in class doesn't mean they're sports related scandals. Its the fact they SAID that were sports related scandals. Wow, the size of your balls is amazing!

Ahh, see how impressionable you are James...
It only took me a few posts to already cause you to soften your stance. Sports “Related” Scandal while still wrong, it certainly more plausible. The Tiger Woods Scandal is certainly related to sports. Its related to how other players approach the game, its related to how sponsors deal with his loss, its even “related” the PGA may govern its players. But, again, it still falls short as none of these are related to the game itself. They have nothing to do with it. And, the fact that you formed your entire conclusion based on what someone else said is borderline pathetic. Sack up dude. Jesus. And, by the way, calling someone an idiot for disagreeing with you, again, with absolutely no support, is a very strong argument tactic. You should use that one for any future business negotiations you have because nothing says diplomacy and professionalism like immature jabs that lack any substance. I think you are ready for the real world. Go get ’em big guy!
by BoomGoesTheDynamite! on Feb 22, 2010 7:04 PM EST up reply actions
I really want to stop this nonsense but...
I didn’t call him an idiot for disagreeing with me. I called him an idiot for agreeing with you.
And as to taking what other people say as gospel, well, sue me if thinking that this country’s sports business leaders and influencers know more than you. It’s shocking, I know.
Last, but certainly not least, you can’t be serious in thinking there’s a difference in sports scandals and sports related scandals. Both describe the Tiger situation. You took the stance that this had absolutely nothing to do with sports. Which is how this great debate started.
This is officially my last post on this thread, so unless you bring my mother into it, I bid you good day sir.

Boom is 100% correct. Athletes are celebrities. Tiger Woods' various affairs = a celebrity scandal. Sports scandals affect the integrity/outcome of the game itself. Steroid use in MLB is a sports scandal.
Friends and lovers lie endlessly, caught in the web of duty. Only enemies speak the truth.
-Stephen King
it does affect the outcome of the sport because he is not playing right now
IF Tiger continued to play on a normal schedual than this would be removed from a sports scandel. But he isn’t playing because of this story.
The implications of Tiger not being a part of the PGA tour right now are very very significant. Millions and Millions of dollars are leaking out of professional golf when Tiger is in therapy. Fact is, when the winner of a weekend golf turny wins a tournement with Tiger present the purse is around $1.5 million. Without Tiger there for the weekend – the same win generates around 800k which is almost half. I can go on an on stating the losses for golf with Tiger removed from the picture.
IT IS a sports related scandel.
Nobody disputes these points...
The “financial” consequences of Tiger’s absence are well documented so you don’t need to regale us on such obvious points. But, again, those have nothing to do with the sport itself. For example, let’s say that Accenture refuses to sponsor a tournament because Tiger’s not playing in it. Ok, so the PGA loses that money, and the player’s can’t play in the tournament, or they do so for less money. But, again, that is not the scandal. The “scandal” is not Tiger’s absence from golf. The scandal is his inability to keep his d!ck in his pants with a wife and kid at home. Now, take the Pete Rose scandal. The scandal was his betting on baseball games in which he played and coached which may or may not have had a direct consequence on the games itself. Moreover, it has a dramatic affect on how the sports governing body regulated the game and its players. THAT (to use your persuasive emphasis technique) is a sports scandal.

Boom is correct, BZ. Sponsorship absence/lack of $$$ do not affect the integrity of the game of golf itself. That is just a byproduct of Tiger's absence due to a self imposed exile based on personal humiliation.

BTW - These are hairs that we are splitting. Bottom line is that the media loves it and it is emphasized by Tiger's celebrity status as the #1 golfer in the world. I don't need an MBA to see that. :)

To some extent I agree.. I do hear your argument Boom and OJR
But how we choose to classify sports is what is not in alignment.
I consider the enterprise of the sport of golf. You guys consider the game of the sport of golf.
Yeah I agree.. this is a very “thin hairs splitting” argument.

I know I said I was done with this silly little argument, but I figured one last post to prove my point would be harmless
I assume you guys have heard of the USA Today and the Associated Press. Well, they too say it is the biggest sports scandal in U.S. history. Regardless of the fact that what Tiger did had nothing to do with sports, it’s still classified as a sports scandal, like I said in my very first post!
Surely this will convince you right? Ah, who am I kidding, you’re still gonna give me crap, but at least I have credible sources to prove my point. Enjoy.

LOL. I tend to be biased towards people who work in the media. I think most of them are morons who gave up on the concept of integrity a long time ago.
