MMA Quick Quote: Jose Canseco wants to fight Herschel Walker
"I guess I may have to show Herschel Walker who the real bad Boy of the Sports industry is. If the powers that be are reading in, I want in."
-- Herschel Walker's third round technical knockout victory over Greg Nagy at Strikeforce: "Miami" last Sat. (Jan. 30) had the mixed martial arts community buzzing. The 47-year-old proved once again that when it comes to athletics, there may be nothing the Heisman Trophy winner can't conquer. But he's not the only athlete bidding for the attention of MMA fans, as former professional "athlete" Jose Canseco once again looks to jump into the spotlight. Canseco essentially called out Walker via his Twitter Account, and put Strikeforce on the spot in terms of setting this fight up. Let's just hope Strikeforce and Walker pay him no mind. DREAM already made that mistake.

Canseco needs extra money. He must still be in debt. Thank you for exposing baseball, Canseco, but leave MMA alone.

LOOK AT THE TRUTH
They threw Jose in with damn Hong Man Choy 7ft 48in, 380lb ass. He ain’t that good but he has alot of fights under his belt and the man is HUGE. So when people clown Jose look at the PUNK Walker had to fight? I think it would be a good fight for them both they have about the same amount of fights.
At least Walker didn't run away
Which is what Jose did. He ran. And he was in terrible shape. Trigg said he heard that Jose was essentially just running a treadmill, nothing much beyond that. It was an exhibition match, and nothing more. A freakshow.
Walker, on the other hand, actually trained — hard — for nine weeks. Like him or not, he went out there and fought a guy with at least one win under his belt.
Hell
What else you gonna do against a GIANT if it is your first fight….Walker would look stupid running away from that PUNK he fought. Hell even FEDOR looked like he was getting beat down by the TECHNO GIANT till he caught him in a armbar so?…..
THE TRUTH IS
They threw Jose in the FIRE. And gave Walker A DOG TREAT…..As far as who is in better shape WALKER IS, but still WHO COULD EVEN SAY HIS OPPONETS NAME?? We can just call him CAN.
truth it
canseco trained in his basement for his fight with choi. and his woman was his corner!! he wanted to keep 100% of the purse, and not even hire real help to make him a better fighter.
I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was.
I'm all for freakshow matches
But fuck that and fuck Jose
If you make an ass out of yourself, there will always be someone to ride you
hahaha
Canseco is no good for any sport!! An imo Herschel would do the same to him that he did to Nagy.
YOU CANT PLEASE EVERYBODY SO YOU MIGHT AS WELL PLEASE YOU!!!!!!!
Here is the problem with freak show fights...
Yes Herschel brought some attention to the sport but now every celebrity will think they can do it. Next stop, Danny Bonaducci vs. Dee Snyder. MMA is on the clock towards becoming a freakshow.
“But Herschel brought attention to the sport….” blah, blah, blah…he also is has an equal negative effect on it by doing this little sideshow. It’s over, now can we go back to contenders being on fight cards?
i agree completely...
That there needs to be a line somewhere. Celebrities shouldn’t be calling eachother out and then actually taking up space that could be filled with viable young up and comers.
The main problem in Herschels case was his age. I would have no problem if Lebron, Pujols Patrick Willis, or even someone like Vin Diesel wanted to try MMA as they are all young enough to really get in to the sport. BUT… they would need to do it in a reasonable and respectful manner. Give up any other past sports/films/whatever and dedicate yourself to the sport. Don’t do it for the payday. If any celebrities wish to fight, it should be because they love the sport like all fighters and fans and have earned the right to do so.

the thing is...
That Herschel isn’t really trying to make a career out of it. He is merely dabbling with his hobby. Given that he is maybe the greatest specimen that I have ever heard of (I once read that he never lifts weights, that he gets that physique from doing calastenics only, and doing thousands of sit ups while watching TV) BUT…. he isn’t ever going to contend for a championship. That’s the point of sports, to strive to win a championship. Since he NEVER will, he is in freakshow land already.
Herschel is a legitimate athlete and a trained fighter. I have no problem with him getting fights against guys on his skill and experience level. I have much more of a problem with SF attempting to match up Lashley with losers who are so terrible they can’t even get a license.
Besides, there are tons of fighters who are never going to contend for a title, including a bunch of guys in SF and UFC. If that’s your only criterion for who should or should not be fighting we would get about 6 cards a year with maybe 4 fights apiece.
The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful
He is more legit...
But not really either. This was just a “let’s see this spectacle” type of thing. Not a real entry for a contender.
I disagree that there are a ton of guys in the UFC and SF that aren’t vying for a title as an end goal. Other than Kimbo, I can’t think of any, in fact (don;t get me started on Kimbo). Everyone else, is trying to put together a few wins in order to make a title run. Who isn’t?
Heschel isn’t. Let’s cut the rope now. If you aren’t striving for a title bid, you are basically taking the very limited space that a REAL fighter is dying to get.
As far as Lashley, I agree, his time to go to the mid level is now. He has gotten by the cans and has developed into a borderline name, time to see what he is capable of. I’m not saying put him in against Fedor or AO but he is ready for the Al Turks, Kongo’s and, I don’t know, Struve’s that SF has to offer.
Just my $0.02

I guess it's okay for Brock Lesnar?
Or “Baby” Bobby. It’s okay for a WWE superstar. But not an NFL or MLB superstar. Hypocrites. You honestly don’t see the difference between Danny Bonnaducci and Herschel Walker? If Kobe Bryant wanted to join UFC I’d say bring it on.
Do not. I repeat, do not, go to mma-core.com. I made the mistake of watching a couple UFC 108 bouts on there and I am still trying to get all the viruses of my computer. Ridiculous! You've been warned.

"thats the point of sports, to strive and win the championship"
That’s your take on what sports is about. To many athletes just proving they could make it there is a huge accomplishment and very well could be their ultimate goal. Walker has done nothing wrong. Its a great feat what he’s done and he has done nothing to shame the sport. Others that didn’t try like he did are who should be shamed.
If I made it to the UFC or SF and won a fight then went on to not be the champ, ya i’d be disappointed but that’s just cause I’m very competitive. Truth is I’d have nothing to be ashamed of as I just did what I set out for. I may have the goal to win the belt ONCE I’ve made it to the big show, but I think before that comes the goal of making it to the UfC/SF, and before that comes competing in organized MMA, and before that goal comes training and learning and getting off the couch. Those are all goals that can mean the world to a person on their own if they are at different points in their lives.

Limited space...
So with space as limited and spots as competative in the higher paying promotions, they aren’t really looking for guys who just want to reach the mountain but who actually want to climb to the summit. Making it to the UFC is great but save the spots for the guys who really want to compete, not just show.
These occasional features are okay I guess, they wanna make some cheddar…fine. But is does hurt the sport long term. Now there are water cooler conversations about celebs fighting instead of the real competators. It’s already been made into a circus.
Yeah, Walker didn’t really do anything wrong per se. It is nothing but a distraction and they could have spent the cash to promo a #1 contender fight of some type. Lame. I would have rather saw a “real” fight instead of Hershel pound a guys shoulder for a stoppage. In fact I was fast forwarding by the time I sensed it would be a long boring fight.
I heard that Lashley vs. Rogers was only talked about, not finalized. I guess that’s about right. Rogers got a flash KO of AA (substitute Carwin for Rogers and AA for GG= Carwin got a flash KO of GG, good comparision, DW) and it didn’t really prove much. I don’t think Carwin earned his title shot (just like Rogers). Anyway, Lashley vs. Rogers is about right, two mid level contenders looking to prove something.
SD
I completely see where you’re coming from and I’d agree on the Jose part of it. I don’t want guys at work talking about how Jose looked etc if that’s all they know about MMA. But if they tuned in for Herschel the idea is they use him again and he carries himself like a gentlemean, and brings in more fans as they take a liking to other fighters from that card as well.
also, just read from Wagon in the ratings thread that he was paid 6 figures, all of which he donated to charity. That’s a big heart in that man.
And if its true its worthy of its own thread.

No way Jose
will never happen. Go coach little league or maybe whore yourself out to 50 fat chicks for a 1000 bux.
Please no
While I did enjoy Herschel’s fight, this would be nothing more than a freakshow to say the least. Canseco is actually a disgrace to cans which is pretty bad. I’d love to see Canseco beat senseless, but not on a Strikeforce card. Who’s to say that Canseco wouldn’t throw the fight anyways and then pull a Petruzelli? Set it up for a DREAM, but nothing in the US please.
all for celebritys
get em all in. start em at the bottom. the fan base will only grow. if they win and move up the ladder great. if they lose also great.
Let walker rackem up with the predator don frye!!!
I know frye wants 2 break both of walkers arms so he has to hire sum1 to wipe his ass for 6-8 weeks!

I can see the next ultimate fighter being a bunch of celebs for the show
which indeed would suck but I think they should put celebs we all hate in the house and someone throw a grenade in it
I would watch it
hahahaha I cant deny that. I would totally watch it it was free

jose has a black belt in takemy dough too
any ass clown can get a blackbelt in take my dough all you have to do is kick pads and memorize a dance called forms or kata. Jiu-jitsu is the only one that really makes you earn belts. Karate and all that is great but the belts don’t mean squat, the arts do look at machida, gsp etc but the belts mean nothing more an attendence record than a skill level
i dont know about the jits part...
have you seen the amount of mma fighters who are earning their so called black belts in bjj. Earning your black belt could easily take between 7 – 10 years and alot of these mma fighters seem to be getting them faster than BJ who we all know can back that up. i think nowadays its hard to take the color of peoples belts seriously.

Ever see Pros vs. Joes?
Canseco was on an episode with Randy Couture. Canseco was apparently talking some shit in the locker room about how bad he was. Somebody asked Randy about it on camera, and being the class guy he is, all he said was the Jose was an interesting guy. I’d like to see those two get in the cage so Randy could give him a schooling.
One of my fav MMA pics...I laugh every time
Fedor once bet NASA he could survive re-entry without a spacesuit.
On July 19th, 1999, a naked Fedor re-entered the earth's atmosphere, streaking over 14 states and reaching a temperature of 3000 degrees. An embarrassed NASA publically claimed it was a meteor, and still owes him a beer.
Im sick of these clown show has been ex pro athletes trying to get in this sport
They should have to work their way up like everyone else. Then i would respect them.
