UFC Quick Quote: Dan Hardy is exactly where he wants to be
"Being the underdog in this fight is exactly the position I want. I wouldn't have it any other way. When you step into a fight as a favourite, it takes some of the excitement and drama away from it all. It almost takes my interest out of the fight. If I'm looking at moving forward in my career and reaching the top, I'm going to need to be the underdog in a few bouts. That just shows you are taking risks and are prepared to go up against the best fighters in the world. I should always be fighting guys that are considered better than me. The moment you fight guys who are worse than you, you might as well give up. The only time I'll stop being the underdog is when I've got the belt around my waist and have reached the top. Even then, I'll still probably be picked against in fights with guys like Thiago Alves and Jon Fitch. That's just the way the world works. You've got to prove yourself against everybody over a long period. I know this and I'm more than ready to keep proving myself. When people doubt me, it just fuels the fire. I read everything people say about me and about my fights, whether it's on mixed martial arts forums or in magazines or newspapers. When people doubt me it gives me an incentive to fight that bit harder to prove them wrong. I know they'll have to eat their words when my arm is raised at the end of the fight."
-- Number one welterweight contender, Dan Hardy, reveals in his most recent blog for ThisIsNottingham.co.uk that he is completely comfortable playing the role of underdog heading into his showdown with welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 111 on March 27. "The Oulaw" has received considerable guff for being rewarded with a title shot without ever defeating (or even competing against) a consensus top five-ranked fighter in nearly 30 professional fights. Regardless, his four wins inside the Octagon, as well as his body of work prior to joining the promotion, were enough to convince UFC brass that the British striker is ready for the big time. With recent wins over Mike Swick and Marcus Davis -- two fights he was supposed to lose according to the odds makers -- can Hardy pull off another upset over possibly the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world under the lights of the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey? Or will he come back to England (or California) with not only a world title around his waste, but a new nickname, "Captain Underdog," to boot?

Um, no. His nationality was enough to convince them. With Bisping’s title aspirations getting put on ice by Hendo, the UFC needed another UK-based meal ticket.

I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was.
Dodgy Jaw...
Serra has serious KO power and in 21 fights GSP was TKO one time, and I think maybe the only time he was hurt in the stand up besides the first BJ fight. What is so Dodgy about that?

I wouldn't say he has no chance
Even though GSP is the more skilled striker, I believe that Hardy is capable of taking a lot more punishment to the chin than GSP can, as we have seen in some of Hardys previous fights where he just seems to walk right through solid shots, and I also think that Hardys strikes landing on GSP will be more significant than GSP’s landing on him, in the same way that Lebans were more destructive to Sakara even though Sakara was by far the superior striker. Alves could not connect with any real damaging shots when he fought GSP, it may well be the same for Hardy, but if does land a few good ones I easily see the biggest UFC upset happening. Call me crazy but I give Hardy a descent chance in the first couple of rounds purely because of his chin and punching power, but if he cannot stop the take downs, which is unlikely , then I see it ending like the Fitch fight. You may well call me crazy, but I picked Jardine and Rashad to beat Liddell, so I don’t mind.
I like the guy, and hopes he puts up an interesting fight against GSP. The question is, How long can he keep the fight standing?
I would also like to see Georges school him standing. Just to shut all the haters up. But really, considering that standing is the only place Hardy has any chance of winning this fight, that would be kinda foolish.

talking about a re.tarded comment.
So any fighter that uses their strengths(wresling/bjj) are a scared childish pussies?
So Brock, Kos, and Fitch are all pussies as well I suppose, because they use their strengths, instead of abandoning what they are good at to amuse and prove to you that they aren’t scared pussies? I think that in general is just a retarded train of thought. The guy is the the #1 ww and is one of three fighters in the world at the top of p4p list and he is a pussy, LOL!

Fitch is a boring piece of dry-humping crap. Kos has god-awful stand-up, but bless his clown-like heart he tries to use it. And Brock doesn’t take people down, he knocks them down and pounds them out.
The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful
Where are all these idiots coming from with their retarded comments??
Hardy is WWWWAAAAAAYYYYYYYY overrated and GSP can stand up with him all day long and school his sorry ass. As much as I do like Hardy, he isn’t the feared striker that they are making him out to be. He couldn’t take out Davis or the human skeleton so do you really think that GSP would be scared of him? Fitch has better standup than Hardy as well.
This is just the UFC trying to make something out of nothing. Sort of like the hype before Silva/Cote….there never was a chance for Cote in that even if his knee didn’t f-up.

If he dropped both Fitch and Alves
Imagine what he’ll do to Hardy.

It won't matter
GSP could kick the hell out of him standing. He beat Penn who is supposed to be a great boxer and Alves this muay thai monster standing anytime he wanted, Fitch too. He just knows no one can even come close to competing with him on the ground. Even BJ the so called “prodigy” he grounded and pounded the hell out of his ass, so much for the world bjj champ!
Calu
He did beat him standing
He out struck him in both fights. He landed more strikes in both fights standing and definitely did more damage in the second fight.
It’s not really debatable.
He did beat him standing
Specially the last fight where BJ the great boxer looked like BJ the great punching bag.

GSP will now only engage in stand-up AFTER his opponent is tired from his takedowns. He’s still one of the best p4p fighters but it’s evident after serra upset, either he lost confidence in stand-up or just became very dependant on wrestling and g’n’p.
i also recall BJ having trouble on the ground
usally BJ is ok on the ground i wonder what went wrong

Tony… you’re a troll and a mongoloid.
First of all, I’m not a yank, you’re a wank. I never said Hardy was a bum, I said he’s getting a shot earlier than normal because he’s a Brit. He’s a good fighter, but he hasn’t beaten any of the UFC’s top five guys. Marcus Davis and Mike Swick? Whatever.
Secondly, about 70% of the UFC is American. So it kinda stands to reason the US would have the most bums in the UFC. But nice obvercation, Mr. Hawking.
I’m not hacking on anybody because they’re British. I’m just pointing out that in this case, being British has expediated Hardy’s title hopes.
I’m going out to get hammered.

Yeah I'm sure he'll be more afraid of Hardy than he was of Alves...

“You are no more entitled to your opinion than I am mine” And yet i guess you dont stay true to your word in all cases. Kinda of a two faced type aren’t you Dice Man?
GSP has out struck BJ Penn twice (Fight metric supports that) and Thiago Alves. He’s not losing the stand up battle to hardy.
Does have a punchers chance? Pretty sure he doesn’t have the power of a Serra.
George would not win a stand up fight with BJ im sorry spacemonkey
GSP wins most fights by scoring points and making people gas. Then once they cant stand then he picks them aparrt.
Irrelevant.
Whether or not GSP would win a true K1 or boxing match with BJ is meaningless and impossible to say for sure.
What isn’t meaningless, and which we can say for certain since he’s done it twice now (the second time in absolutely dominating fashion), is that GSP would win the stand up battle in an MMA fight with BJ. Doesn’t matter how he does it, he does it.
The point being if he can do that against BJ friggen’ Penn, he can surely do it against Hardy. Not sure why you had yo make this about your boy BJ.
DIsagree, but...
Dosen’t matter, he owned the world bjj champ on the ground, Pretty freakin impresssive. Remember, it’s MMA>
Calu
he hasnt out struck BJ
He was getting his ass kicked in fight # 1 then he did the smart thing and started taking him down to get points… go watch it again
He landed more Strikes though. Go check fight metric. And there was an eye poke as well that put him at a disadvantage which certainly increased the amount of damage he received early.
so
superficial damaged determines the winner in your books? not who actually landed more effect strikes?
Damage should win a fight when it goes to the judges
but thats not the scoring system so ill live with it
I don’t see how you can say that. One errant elbow that opened up a nasty could win a fight for a guy who was otherwise being dominated but didn’t happened to bleed a lot for whatever reason if such were the case.
The fact of the matter is in the first fight from striking distance GSP both attempted and landed more strikes. All your rationalizing isn’t going to change that, nor is your biased opinion. From an objective standpoint, GSP won that figth in every area.
marquart should get the title shot then
by your standards of damage deciding the winner of a fight then nate fucked sonnen up and should be fight AS nest.
Pennfan is an idiot
Plain and simple….no point in arguing with him as his single digit IQ cannot formulate any response other than “BJ outstruck GSP” or “BJ never quit” or “BJ is the best standup fighter ever” or “watch the first fight to see how BJ was robbed”.
Ignore the second fight where he was completely dominated…..if you can’t admit that, you need to quit huffing gasoline again.

Well, yeah. of course
But you can work a guy over, beat the snot out of him, and he can still end up looking not too visibly damaged.
Look at GSP Penn 2. Penn looked relatively alright afterwords, but he was absolutely dominated and has since admitted to fighting the last round or two basically knocked out standing.
If i remember correctly
the main reason for the hospital visit was to make sure his vision was okay after that accidental eye poke.
So i’m pretty sure it does not say otherwise.

Hardy vs GSP - Standup vs super well rounded
GSP knows Hardy’s strength is the boxing (especially that vicious left hook), Dan knows GSP’s strength, which is everything, including his crisp striking.
That alone should tell you who will win If you think Dan’s winning, that’s a very high level of wishful thinking, put some money on him as you’ll win tons – of course you won’t, cause he’s losing.
GSP is at the TOP of his game, going to come in 100% and if you’ve been reading around, he’s stronger than ever before. Dan won’t even be able to handle GSP’s wrestling let alone anything else.
Look for Dan to look like a wish out of water. Should be an interesting fight, i’ll be rooting for the Dan though, being that i’m british, haha.
He's right about being the underdog
Let’s be honest here GSP’s A game is much better than Hardy’s A game but being the underdog not only takes the pressure away from all the expectations and may cause the fauvorite to look past his opponent. Now with saying that I don’t think GSP will take Hardy lightly as he as learned his lesson with Serra, but the pressure that comes with being the fauvorite gives Hardy a little bit of a chance as he can and will take more chances wich I believe will make this a quick victory for GSP but even so it was to be expected and little respect will be lost for Hardy in the MMA community. Now if Hardy is succesful in any chances he takes his status will rise even with a loss becuase he dented GSP’s armour something few were able to do. Being able to fight the champion win or lose gains a lot of attention for HArdy and if his country mate Bisping loses he may become the new foauvorite with in his country for awhile anyway.

This is a really bad fight for him. He does have decent hands but when fighting GSP you have to be concious of him taking you down at will and that is where he beats you on the feet. His skill set is far superior to that of anyone in the weightclass and its not Hardy’s fault but he doesnt have much chance in this fight.

It should be a good match imo...
I just think GSP is better in every aspect and Hardy doesn’t know what he is dealing with. I do give Hardy a good punchers chance. I don’t think he has as much power as people try to say, but he still has good hands and could land the needed shot. I don’t think it’s going to happen, but I’m not gonna just count him out. If it goes to the ground, which I am sure it will, I think Hardy is gonna take a beating like no other. I think GSP is great and is the best in his division with no questions… but I always wonder how long someone can be at the top before they take the shot that puts them out. It’s a matter of time and his time will come at some point… I just don’t think it will be this fight.

British Fighters...
MMA is still relatively new to the British, however they have produced some excellent boxers over the years so in time I’m pretty sure that in time we’ll see some amazing fighters. At this very moment in time GSP is too much of a handfull for any WW, period. The only person that I think is well rounded enough to even give him a run for his money is Koscheck, but again I think he’ll lose. As for GSP being scared to strike? Go back and watch the Fitch and Alves fights again, he destroyed Fitch on his feet and MORE than held his own with Alves.
