Vitor Belfort: 'I think I did the right thing'

Vitor450_medium

Props: UOL Esporte

Quoteworthy:

"You can’t describe something indescribable. Everyone is upset but I think they understand the situation. It’s part of the life and I will come back stronger after this. This situation gives me more wish to become the champion. Soon I will be fighting for the belt and doing what is need. I just want to thank the support and endearment from the fans. I only ask everyone to root for my recovery. It’s hard to speak over it. It’s like the saying ‘the past is a bounced check, the future is a dated check and the present is money in the hand.' I have to look ahead. I know I have a brilliant career to come. It came until I couldn’t stand the pain anymore. I was sacrificing myself too much. Then I went through MRI scan and the doctor said I couldn’t put off the surgery otherwise I wouldn’t continue working. It could be worse if I fought with my shoulder less than 50% good. Surely It would be a terrible performance and might mean an injury for the rest of my life. I think I did the right thing now."

Vitor Belfort spoke out today about his decision to withdraw from his UFC 112 title fight against middleweight champion Anderson Silva on April 10 in Abu Dhabi due to shoulder surgery that he underwent two days ago. "The Phenom" has explained the pain in his shoulder has been hurting since July of 2009 and the Brazilian had been taking anti-inflammatories just to train. Belfort cannot resume training for four months but promises to come back better than ever when he does. Did he do the right thing? Or should he have made this decision before committing to the Silva fight?

did he do the right thing?

I don’t know…hard to think he believed it would heal itself…and why wouldn’t he want to be 100% before signing? I wouldn’t expect anyone to step in there with him if they had doubts

Look what happened to Cote

He knew his knee was one wrong move away from severe injury and went in there less than 100% and has been on the shelf since…I think it’s the right move for him…this is his career.

Everyone goes in less than 100%, however...

… Cote knew his knee was WAY less that 100%. Like Belfort said, he would have entered UFC 112 with a shoulder at less than 50%. I’d guess Cote’s knee was less than 50%. He stepped wrong, and youch! Done.

Whether we like it or not, he had to do what was right for him and not endanger his future.

I’m dissapointed the fight is not going to happen but I rather him get healthy and see him fight when he is at his best.

I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt. Shoulder injuries are’t of the variety you can just “fight through”, and his biggest weapon (left hand) would be nullified.

It sounds like he’ll be out close to a year or 3/4 of a year altogether. I really wonder what this will do for his career. I doubt he’ll be coming right back in and getting a title shot.

The belt has already been in limbo for a year. Make a 185 title fight with Sonnen. If you have to pus it back a month, so be it.

Fight has to go to Sonnen unfortunately though if he can’t get medically cleared in time and the Wand-Bisping winner emerges unscathed then they could put on that fight instead. Any opponent will be a disappointment for me at this point though, MMA is getting more depressing daily.

We all know how it would end, but there’d be plenty of fireworks along the way! Can’t you just see those two clinched against the fence disembowelling each other with relentless brutal knees! It would be the most exciting fight Silva has had in a looooong time! If Wandy still had his PRIDE chin, it would be a war for the ages.

First Post Ever

Personally i wouldn’t want to see this fight with either fighter less than 100 percent i think we, the fans, deserve to see this go down when both are as healthy as they can be. As for substitutes, I cant think of anything at middleweight that would be proper. That being said, at lhw the only options are randy or thiago, to me not much else makes sense.

Ive never seen the BJ/ Machida fight but

how did that go? i mean if he fought the champion one weight class above anders would it really be that far fetched? not that i think bj would stand a chance but i dont think he has ever been ko’d ( correct me if im wrong pls) and has a hell of a chin… it seems crazy but something about that matchup is very appealing to me.

by Pour out a lil liquor on Feb 12, 2010 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

BJ actually gave Machida a tough fight

He’s crazy enough to ask for that fight and both Andy and BJ have a lot of respect for each other, they’ve declared each other as being the best p4p fighter in the past. However if GSP is “too small” for Andy then there’s no way that BJ will get the chance, plus blowing his smart strength and conditioning program for the sake of one fight no matter how big it could be isn’t a smart move for BJ, he’s never looked better or healthier and it’d be a shame to see him ruin that for himself by taking on this fight.

I just thought of something!!!

Last I heard Shields was still in negotiations with SF I don’t know if his contract is done yet or not? That would be the perfect solution if it was and UFC was allowed to sign him?

Dana is too pigheaded to validate Strikeforce by giving their champion a title shot. If Shields does defect to the UFC, he better come in at 170.

And after that, i think we have seen it all before… well other than maybe semtex or rumble but they are both not yet deserving of a title shot!

I actually like some American beer and Bud is easily my favourite lager, though the best beers are the British and Irish lagers in my opinion, especially Tetley’s, John Smith’s and Guinness. You can’t beat shots, licquers and cocktails on a night out and I also like glasses of wine and champagne. In other words if it’s alcohol then I’ll drink it, no matter the strength or taste.

Terrible news

Apparently a lot of the top athletes had been complaining about the new course and how their lives were being put at risk for the sake of it. Shows how dangerous luge is, anyone who calls combat sports dangerous should get some perspective. That luge event shouldn’t take place in Vancouver now, I don’t think that it would be appropriate to do so. Always tragic when someone that young dies.

I guess Dana has made some big commitments to his new partners in the Middle East and doesn’t want to remove Silva from this card, but I think he needs to postpone this fight and rebook as big a co-mainer for 112 as he can put together.

Then again, I’m not running the company and I’m not privy to all the inner machinations of what transpires behind the scenes.

Over 200 comments!

Upset news but what can UFC do? In my opinion put on Anderson and Randy Couture to fight each other. Capitain American wants to test his ability and is not interested about belts any longer, so give The Natural an unforgetabble fight.

This fight makes all sense for their purposes. Anderson knows Randy has a big name and it wouldn’t be a shame to be defeated by the veteran.

I didn't think of Maia

That fight was one that I wanted to see until Demian’s last 2 fights proved that he’s nowhere near ready. I say wait until Wand-Bisping then give the winner of that fight the next shot, especially if Wand smashes Bisping quickly like I expect him to though the fact that Andy and Wand made friends could ruin that potential fight whilst a dominant Bisping win (very unlikely) would make him a top contender and a more marketable one than Maia, though at this point Sonnen has Bisping beat as the biggest arsehole at MW and has a better record.
