Here we go again.
The injury bug that bit the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) through early winter has reared its ugly fangs once again.
Kevin Iole at Yahoo!Sports.com delivers the sad news.
Vitor Belfort is injured (shoulder) and off UFC 112 title fight with Anderson Silva. Confirmed by Dana White. More details to come.
"The Phenom" and "The Spider" were initially penciled in to collide at UFC 108 earlier this year; however, minor elbow surgery for Silva postponed the Brazilian brawl until UFC 112 at the Concert Arena from Ferrari World, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, on Saturday, April 10.
Perhaps it's just not meant to be -- Belfort even seemed uncomfortable with the quick title shot after a first round destruction of former 185-pound division champ Rich Franklin in a 195-pound catchweight fight on Sept. 19, 2009.
In fact, he admitted that Nate Marquardt more than likely deserved the nod over him. Nonetheless, he accepted the bout, twice, and both times the plans have had to be scrapped.
Waiting in the wings, of course, is Chael Sonnen, who utterly dominated Marquardt at UFC 109: "Relentless" this past weekend; however, he sustained a humongous gash on his forehead during the three-round unanimous decision win and was slapped with a lengthy medical suspension.
Sonnen, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), is not allowed to spar until March 24, giving him little time to truly prepare to battle a worldclass and dangerous opponent such as Silva. Regardless, Sonnen indicated in several post-fight interviews that he would be ready just in case something like this happened.
It's a tall order, considering Silva hasn't really lost in more than five years (sans a disqualification loss to Yushin Okami in 2006), and he's essentially obliterated the middleweight division since entering the Zuffa fold in mid 2006.
Whether or not the promotion gives him the green light is still up in the air, and more than likely, currently the focus of heated debate in the UFC war room.
There are other options, of course.
Silva has recently competed against 205-pound fighters to give him more of a challenge. He passed with flying colors, sending former champion Forrest Griffin running for the hills and pasting James Irvin with a highlight-reel, fighting-ending combination.
Randy Couture, perhaps?

I mean injury aside, he was hesitant about fighting AS originally and I think that would have completely played into his past short comings, on the big stage. Like you said if he is not mentally there, I would much rather watch Andy tool someone at 205 or even have Chael step in on super short notice(although if Chael got owned there would always be the well he took the fight on short notice crap).

i never bought the “vitor is back” hype. sorry, but i’ve heard that a couple times before. i say postpone silva for a card and let him fight sonnen. it isn’t like silva is a big ppv draw, especially if he is fighting a sub par opponent.

Gegard Mousasi would be a great fight since we probably won’t see Vitor fight Andy (EVER). I also agree Andy’s a better fighter. It would however be a huge draw and a way to stifle the critics around the world if Gegard were possible. This is as possible as most of speculative match ups presented here.
Vitor would have been thrown a beating by Andy anyway. I guess in reality Thiago Silva would be someone I’d love to see get KO’d by Andy. So of any real possibility I choose that beating to watch.

The champion fighting without the belt on the line is pointless, and sets a bad precedent (unless the challenger misses weight like Lutter). If the champ is fighting in the weight class in which he holds the title, it must be on the line. If you beat the champion, then you obviously are a legitimate champion yourself… it pissed me off when Strikeforce had Mousasi fighting Soko in a non-title fight a few months ago.

I was on the UFC site looking at the fighters in the spiders wieght class, just seeing who could maybe be thrown at him and I saw Pat Miletich listed as a fighter. whats up with that? If they are not a acting fighter, there not on the list. Is he coming back or I’m wrong on that?

But who would’ve thought Vitor would get injured and Nate would lose.
Silva dodges a big bullet
fuck this. The only fight that makes sense for him is Sonnen. He will destroy Maia, And Sonnen also but makes for a better fight. I bet Silva just pulls out all together probably to fight another irrelevant Light-Heavy match.

Nate desreved the shot (deserved,) personally I dont think Vitor wanted to fight Anderson. Vitor has proven to us that he can throw punches in bunches but doesnt like to get hit himself. Im not sure why so many people think he is super tough because he isnt, he can just throw lots of punches, if he doesnt ko you then he is finished. Hendo and I thought Nate were the only tywo guys out there right now that could make a fight with Anderson, obviously now Sonnen looks like they guy. I just dont get how Vitor is allowed to come back and have his name mixed up with these guys, they would all kill Vitor!!!

i’m thinking GnP victory for sonnen if he ever fight anderson. anderson is just one good game plan away from getting exposed.
