Andrei Arlovski vs Fres Oquendo exhibition boxing match booked for Feb. 27 in Miami
Miami, FL -- February 9th, 2010 -- Team Pitbull, Team Oquendo and The Consequences Charity announce today that Top 10 ranked heavyweight boxer Fres Oquendo known as "Fast Fres" will take on UFC former UFC heavyweight champ and Top 10 ranked MMA legend Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski in a four round boxing exhibition at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, Hotel and Resort on Saturday, February 27th.
Once a year, Miami's finest philanthropists, business leaders and the community gather to help raise much needed funds for The Consequences Charity through an annual fund-raising gala known as "The Blacks Annual Gala" hosted by Roy and Lea Black.
The charity is dedicated to reducing and preventing adolescent criminal behavior and supporting communities with proactive intervention programs with the purpose of directly impacting the lives of vulnerable youth and their families.
Translation: Keep kids out of jail and educate them.
Both Oquendo and Arlovski are both known for their vicious striking ability and exciting fights. Both top ranked fighters have now decided to fight to help kids stay off the streets. 100% of all money raised from the sale of tickets and auction items goes directly to the charity - a 501(c)3 not-for-profit.
"I am honored to step into the ring with a great fighter like Fres Oquendo. This is going to be an exciting exhibition match but we already know the winner: the children we are helping" says Arlovski.
Oquendo says, "I have seen Arlovski in the ring and in the cage and I am excited to be able to showcase my skills against an MMA legend. Believe me, we are going to go at it for four rounds with the goal that every punch and every blow helps this cause. "
Lea Black, who is putting together her 5th annual event says, "The Gala is one of the top annual charity events on the South Florida social calendar and has drawn top entertainers such as: Alex Rodriguez, Lance Bass, Jencarlos Canela, Maria Conchita Alonso, Lucia Mendez, Dave Matthews, Hulk Hogan, Lennox Lewis, Mike Piazza, Tracy & Alonzo Mourning to name a few. We are very excited for this year’s main event Mr. Arlovski going against Mr. Oquendo.

If he keeps fighting like a robot
yup, I agree: it’ll be a short night.

For what it’s worth…
Oquendo is scheduled to fight a bum (Demetrice King 15-17) one week before the Arlovski bout. I’m willing to bet this charity exhibition will look a lot like the “grappling exhibitions” we’ve seen in MMA. It’s going to be a glorified sparring session where they’re not looking to put each other to sleep.
Maybe I’m wrong and they go all out for 4 rounds…but I don’t know that I’d bet on that happening.

Oquendo can't put anybody to sleep anyway. He is a mediocre HW at best.

He’s stopped men with better chins than Arlovski, but yeah, most of his stoppages are more accumulation TKO’s than one punch KO’s

What is your definition of meidocre
I think is his better than top 25 in the world. I would bet that there are more than 500 heavyweight boxers through out the world. Probably way more. If this is the case then he is better than 95% of the heavyweight fighters that are fighting right now. If that is mediocre then you have very high standards.
Hahaha! They're here too?!?
I thought they were now on the other side?
Think about how dumb the average person is, then realize that half of them are even dumber than that.

Yeah, or maybe I’m the guy who handles the SBNation.com/mma page which does it’s best to link to all the SB Nation blogs because we’re all on the same team…that means BE, Mania, WKR, For Real, Bad Left Hook, Boxing Bulletin..etc. Nice to meet you!
Or maybe I’m the guy who works with the Mania guys on a daily basis.
Get used to seeing me around folks. It’s not trolling, it’s being an active member of one of our network’s best blogs.

silly press release
fres is hardly a top 10 heavy. he may have cracked the top 10 in about 2001 but hasn’t been close since. he was never really known as a power puncher either.

.
I am not a fan of Oquendo
But I do love boxing. Actually Fres has won by ko or tko 20 or the 31 wins he has. He is currenty ranked 14th by the IBF which i believe or was at one time the most legit of the boxing federation. He is fighting a know name guy coming up. It is not as easy to get a great fight in boxing like it is in mma. Plus you got to make money while trying to get back in contention. He was in the top ten for a while until he lost to Toney in 08. He will never be a champ but he is a world class boxer. His only losses are to guys who were either world champion or went on to become a world champion except maybe for his loss to Tua.
Plus does it really matter. Even if they go out and play with each other. This is for charity. It is not to see if Arlovski or Oquendo is the better man. It is for the kids.
Get real people
Its an Exhibition match for charity, not for a title, it will be like the Fedor/Aoki Fedor/Mousasi matches, just some hard sparring and some fun. Its like probowl or something similar
Good post. Some guys are on here bashing the fighters or saying who cares. This thing is for a good cause. If people cant get behind people doing charity work then something is wrong. People who bash people who are trying to do a good thing for charity are the real losers. People must really hate thier lives to come on here and make fun of someone who is trying to help a good cause
