UFC Quick Quote: Michael Bisping will draw on his fight with Chris Leben to beat Wanderlei Silva

Bisping-leben2_medium

"Stylistically, the fight may be similar to the one I had with Chris Leben in October 2008. Leben was a tough, aggressive guy with some highlight reel knockouts on his record and he really brought the fight to me. He also throws similarly wild and looping punches to Wanderlei. I had to use my speed and straighter punches to beat Leben and the same thing may come into play with Wanderlei. I’d say Wanderlei is a bit quicker and more explosive than Leben overall. Obviously the game plans won’t be the same, but in terms of style there are definite similarities between the two of them. I’m not going to fight Wanderlei the way I did Leben, but I may draw on my fight with Leben to help me beat Wanderlei. Whichever way I have to fight, the end result will be the same – my arm will be raised!"

Michael Bisping pens the latest entry in his online diary over at The Daily Telegraph as his confidence grows heading into his pending middleweight clash with Wanderlei Silva at UFC 110 from the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia, on Feb. 21. "The Count" is planning to use his fight against Chris Leben at UFC 89 as a blueprint for defeating the former PRIDE FC wrecking ball. Will "The Axe Murderer" make sure that's one plan that doesn't come together?

Good idea Mike

I’m going to draw on my 3 for 3 picks from the SF show on Saturday to win the lottery this weekend….

Fedor once bet NASA he could survive re-entry without a spacesuit.

On July 19th, 1999, a naked Fedor re-entered the earth's atmosphere, streaking over 14 states and reaching a temperature of 3000 degrees. An embarrassed NASA publically claimed it was a meteor, and still owes him a beer.

leben vs wanderlei

Fight math works in this situation. 1,000 fights subtract the amount of times Leben wins = 1,000 victories for Silva.

Congrats to everyone who picked Robbie over MM. He took an a$$ whoopin but played a "risky" game plan like a fiddle. H O L Y S H 1 T that was an insane finish - Melvin was completly waxed. 2/3 on the night. Crap.

I love Wandy to pieces but I can’t see him winning. I would love to see Wandy KO him tho would make my night much like Hendos KO at 100.

How do you think that Bisping will win?

U got that right big Z

Bisping needs to get his head examined if he thinks leben & Wand r in the same dimension! Wand catches the people that try running, ask yuki kondo & Tito

Leben

Leben ain’t no Wanderlei Silva! Nity-nite Bisping!

As I recall the Bisping-Leben fight

Bisping merely tried not to lose the fight and that’s not what we fans pay to see. If he employs the same strategy with Silva, he’s going to play it safe and basically not really engage. Hopefully though, Wandy can still catch him and end his night. It would be nice to see Wandy back in the winner’s column at Bisping’s expense.

Actually ufc 89 was free on Spike so you didn’t pay anything more than your usual cable bill to see that fight

American fans might not of paid for it in the usual sense, but the fans in the stadium didn’t get their tickets in a cracker jack box..

Bisping can say what he wants, but sooner or later he’s gonna get caught. If he can handle it or not is the question, the cut is going to be very hard on Wanderlei. If he gets it past the first round he has a chance.

That being said. Wanderlei 1st Round KO.(Looping Right)

I love Wandy, but I haven’t seen anything from him in the last 2 years (save the vicious KO of Jardine) that would make me pick him here. Keep in mind that this is Wandy’s first cut to MW. When he was at 195 lbs against Franklin, he seemed somewhat slower and less powerful than usual. Bisping has more experience at MW and is younger, hungrier, and just approaching the prime of his career. As much as I want Wandy to win, it’s just not realistic.

In the last 2 years outside of Keith Jardine (who was hoovering near top 10 at that point)

he went 3 rounds(in a fight many people thought Wandy might have won) against Franklin, had one of the most exciting fights with a Chuck (granted it was the Rampage broken Chuck), and got killed by Rampage. So Chuck, JArdine, and Franklin are all great fighters, former champs(minus Jardine again who has flirted with title contention at least) vs. Mike wins against umm. Leben, McCarthy, and Day. While Wandy has not been very successful over the last 2 years he has not been fighting b/c level gatekeepers and cans. Bispings one impressive fight is KAng. Wandy won’t miss the opportunity to finish the fight if he knocks Bisping down, like KAng did. Maybe the weight cut makes some difference but the last 2 years of each fighter can’t even be somewhat compared. One was fighting legit fighters and the other not so legit fighters!

theres no denying

that Wanderlei isn’t the same as in his Pride days. But it’s also his style catching up to him and the amount of punishment he has taken. If Dan Henderson and CroCop ko’d me, I would be lucky if I could get well enough to be fed through a straw the rest of my life. Yet Wanderlei is still competitive in the UFC. Da Monkey makes a good point about his past fights. He isn’t fighting cans(and I think he won the Franklin fight). Wanderlei won’t have a title anymore, but he is still at the level were he should be able to dispose of Bisping without much trouble.

You gotta respect Wanderlei, a legend and one of the nicest guys to his fans you’ll ever met.

by RayRayJr on Feb 1, 2010 10:29 AM EST up reply actions

The other big thing is that the Bisping doesn't have the power to dispose of Wandy the way..

Cro Cop, Hendo, or Rampage did. If he fights the Leben style fight-Hit and Run he can maybe pull a rabbit out of his hat, but I think Wandy will catch him. He just needs to catch him once and game over and we can lay to rest all this Bisping competing nonsense! =)

so there you have it.

Wandy by flying armbar.

…Bisping called it, not me.

no lose situation for Bisping

The word is Bisping asked for this fight (now that he’s past his prime).

Bisping will have the same strategy he had against Leben, Hamil, and Henderson (run away and try to sneak jabs in). He won’t bring the style we saw against Day or Kang.

Silva is favored with most fans but I’d give Bisping a better chance than a lot of people are giving him (he is squirly on the ground, he is fit, he can finish, he’s hungrier,… there’s no doubt he’s a great fighter… and there is no doubt that Silva is past his prime… plus the weight cut is a variable). I just really hope Silva KOs him.

Regardless of the outcome, he can’t take anything away from the amazing accomplishments of “the Axe Murderer”. A true legend.

Asking for this fight just shows what a douche Bisping is.

You called Bisping great? Seriously?

If you make an ass out of yourself, there will always be someone to ride you

by bigbadbunbun on Feb 1, 2010 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

He’s a hell of a lot better than most people on here want to give him credit for. He acted like a douche when he coached TUF (at least from what I heard, I didn’t see that season) and he won a close decision over Hammill, and Bisping somehow gets blamed as if he cast the deciding vote for himself. And because of those two things 90% of the posters hate him and refuse to acknowledge that he is a very good fighter. He has solid stand-up, even if it isn’t very powerful, and he has good BJJ and subs. I think between Wand’s weight cut and the fact that this isn’t PRIDE, Bisping takes a decision pretty convncingly.

The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful

by P-Dub on Feb 1, 2010 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

With all the accumulated punishment Wand has taken over the years, a solid strike from Bisping will have the same effect as a shot from Cro Cop four years ago. That being said, standing and trading will actually favor Bisping. And like John G always says, never bet on a guy making his first cut to a lower weight lass.

That’s a good choice too. Bispings BJJ should be good enough to avoid a sub while doing some damage on the ground like he did to Kang.

Respect

if, and I know its a big if, but if Bisping does win will some of you guys give him some respect or will you all just say he beat a Wandy past his prime?
I actually see the fight going like the Jardine fight…

I like both of em

So let the best man win. It’ll be Wandy by KO or Mike by TKO or Decision.

it's all about don frye

by mmafigjam on Feb 1, 2010 11:39 AM EST reply actions

Wanderlei will bring it!

He’ll attack from whatever angle he’s at. Even past his prime, he doesn’t take “breathers” he goes and goes regardless of fatigue. Remember the last 30 seconds of the Franklin fight? Wandelei was pumelling Rich with elbows with Franklin on his back. Bisping is going to see a fighter that he has never faced before – with an attitude of “I don’t give a fuck” I seriously doubt that Bisping has enough power to KO Wanderlei, therefore this fight will end either viciously by the hands of Wand, or it will go to decision in which Wand wins. Wandelei’s last fight was with a fighter similar in technique to Bisping – although much better in that technique, and (IMO) won that fight. Bisping has no chance.

Wanderlei will be faster at 185 than you’re used to seeing him, and much more powerful than anyone Bisping has faced at MW.

I can’t wait for the staredown. Bisping’s been talking a lot of shit, and you know how Wanderlei is. Remember the staredown with Ricardo Arona? How about Rampage Jackson? This one will be intense.

by RU486 on Feb 1, 2010 12:19 PM EST reply actions

I honestly think bisping is going 2 shit his pants at the stare down !

Wands staredowns r legendary! He won a couple fights by stare down alone >:0(
WAR WANDENCO!!!

Bisping

will be right in his face at the staredown don’t you worry about that

WANDY RIP Bispings going to toy with you then destroy you

If Bisping appraoches this fight like he is going up against someone similar to Leben then night night for the Brit.

by AintNoSunshine on Feb 1, 2010 2:11 PM EST reply actions

bispings done! Wandys power will restrist Bispings stand up the same way hendos did.

only way i see him winning is by avoiding the power the whole fight, taking wandy down whenever possible, and not letting him get into a goove (slugfest).
I wouldn’t be surprised if thats what we see Bisping attempt to do! can he do it? I don’t know!
