It took more than one year, but Steve Cantwell is finally making his return to the Octagon when he meets Cyrille Diabate at UFC on Versus 3, which is scheduled to take place at the KFC Yum! Center in Lousiville, Ky., on March 3.
MMAweekly.com reports that verbal agreements are in place for the 205-pound showdown.
Cantwell was supposed to meet Vladimir Matyushenko at UFC 108 and then Ricardo Romero at UFC 116, but both bouts were called off when "The Robot" was scratched for various (and mysterious) reasons. The former WEC light heavyweight champion was then scheduled to hook 'em up with Stanislav Nedkov, but again, Cantwell pulled out with a knee injury.
Cantwell is currently on a two fight losing streak, dropping decisions to Luis Cane and Brian Stann. He has one win inside the eight-walled cage -- a bone-bending submission (armbar) over Razak Al-Hassan more than two years ago.
He'll have his hands full if he intends to break out of his slump when he attempts to tame "The Snake."
Diabate was riding high on a six fight-win streak, defeating the likes of Lodune Sincaid, Marcus Hicks and Luiz Cane, among others, before hitting a brick wall also known as Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 120. The 37-year-old Muay Thai specialist is now looking to get back in the win column and start another run in the talent-rich light heavyweight division.
UFC on Versus 3 is expected to feature a welterweight war between Diego Sanchez and Martin Kampmann, as well as 185-pound warriors Mark Munoz and C.B. Dollaway competing against each other to move one step ahead in the middleweight ranks.
