If Todd Duffee wanted to erase the memory of going limp against Mike Russow earlier this year, he couldn't have picked a better opponent to help him do it.
FEG officials today confirmed that the UFC exile has been booked to challenege Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion and recently crowned K-1 World Grand Prix Champion Alistair Overeem at the Dec. 31 FieLDS Dynamite!! event in Saitama, Japan.
And according to Duffee (via K-1.co-jp), it was all part of the plan.
"I’d like to clarify one thing. I asked my manager for this fight. I had heard that (DREAM) were having trouble finding an opponent, and that many people had turned down the fight. Every fight is a risk. It was a chance to fight a great opponent and to fight in Japan. I’m not here to have a padded record or anything; I just want to see what I can do. This was a good chance to do that against a great name."
At this time, FEG officials have yet to confirm if the bout will crown the new DREAM heavyweight champion.
Overeem has continued to wreak havoc in both mixed martial arts as well as the K-1 kickboxing circuit, becoming the first fighter to capture major titles in both sports.
"I will wait and see what DREAM decides (about the DREAM heavyweight title). I think Todd is ready to put on a hard fight, and he has a great record so far, so a title fight is possible. I do know once I have the belt I will defend it. Anyone is welcome to come here and challenge me, and I will fight absolutely anyone to defend it."
FieLDS Dynamite!! 2010 will air live via HDNet on Dec. 31 starting at 4 a.m. ET from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.
