Gilbert Melendez is 'ready for new blood' after 'cleaning out' the Strikeforce lightweight division

Quoteworthy:

"Honestly I'm ready for some new blood. I've cleaned out a lot of guys in the 155 lb. division so I will probably have to fight a couple of guys again who are in my weight class. I know that is a possibility so I'm prepared to deal with that. Then I hear Paul Daley called out K.J. Noons and Nick Diaz and while I know that Diaz is down...Noons says that Daley isn't worthy and I think that Paul Daley is a Top 10 guy. I would love to jump up and fight somebody with a high profile like that who would raise my stock in the pound for pound rankings. Something like that interests me and those are the kinds of things I want to bring to the table. We can do it at a catchweight bout at 165-pounds but if he has a problem making that and we need to do it at 170-pounds, then let's do it. "

Current Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez isn't exactly looking forward to potential rematches with rivals Josh Thomson and Shinya Aoki. The problem is, if he sticks around at 155-pounds, that's exactly what awaits him. No one ever accused "El Nino" of not being proactive though and once he heard Paul Daley was calling out K.J. Noons and Nick Diaz, he decided to throw his name in the hat. He's even willing to meet the British striker at 170-pounds. What do you think, Maniacs? Is Melendez crazy for wanting to move up for bigger challenges?

I find

Gil to be a bit of a cocky prick, but I admire his attitude towards wanting to fight the best. I like seeing guys wanting the biggest and best challenges out there and open to fighting anyone, even if it means moving up a weight class to do so.

AT LEAST

He’s willing to fight at a catch weight OR at Daley’s 170.

Too bad his buddy Nick Diaz dosen’t feel the same way

by jtc5150 on Dec 20, 2010 12:43 AM EST up reply actions

There is a good reason for it though.

Gil will jump to 170 bc it will boost his standings or do something for his rankings bc daley was a beast in the ufc and he is the #1 contender at ww and it would make him look more lucrative if he beats Daley in which I am certain he will. Nick stepping upt to 185 to fight Mayhem who as of late only has that show going for him. Mayhem isnt ranked #1 contender in strikeforce so Diaz would benefit nothing and would risk everything

UFC

He doesn’t wanna say it in such words but if he cud jump ship with no hassle i think he would

I'd like to see him fight...

Eddie Alvarez before he hits the UFC. Bellator and SF has to make this fight happen already. If Gil wins, UFC would have to give him serious consideration.

I'd also give Eddie the edge in that fight, but not by much.

And I don’t think Melendez needs to fight Alvarez to get serious consideration from the UFC, I think he should be getting that already.

Dana already said that he is going to get Gilbert!

Although I have been a fan of Gilberts since Pride, I think Eddie would edge out a decision against him…but it could be the fight of the year!!!

Gilbert better not dare move up to 170lbs to fight Semtex. That is a horrible idea, and semtex has the td defense to keep the fight standing against ANY lightweight!!!

I have less confidence in Daley's TDD against LWs

than his ability to get back to his feet after being taken down. I think Gilbert could definitely get the fight to the ground, but I’m not sure he could keep it there. And despite his improved boxing he would be at a severe disadvantage on the feet. I think Gilbert would definitely have a shot against Daley, but if he were to win (unless he did so on the feet) it would just be attributed to Daley having bad TDD and it would be discredited.

I've been waiting on that one.....

But it doesn’t seem to be happening. I guess I can’t blame Melendez for not mentioning Eddie’s name, I can’t think there are many LW’s looking to call him out. Alvarez is definitely one of the best LW’s in the world, I think he beats Melendez.

Pretty easy to call out the guy with zero ground game

if he really wants a challenge he is going to have to leave Strikeforce

by Get Down or Lay Down on Dec 19, 2010 5:43 PM EST reply actions

cleaning out?

Does SF have another LW past Thomson?

fuck melendez

call out an english guy and that raises your stock? even kimbo beat an english guy. can’t stand this little prick. i’d love for him to go to the ufc, lose 4 straight and crawl back to coker with his tail betwen his legs…although he’d never lose 4 straight because after his 3rd loss they’d throw him paul kelly or paul taylor,,,one of the english pauls. fucking shaved ape looking twat

I don’t think it has anything to do with him being english.
It’s because he’s horribly one dimensional.

by Get Down or Lay Down on Dec 19, 2010 6:18 PM EST reply actions

but aren't all english fighters one dimensional?

they’re all from boxing or kick boxing backgrounds. we just don’t have wrestling as a sport in england. the only wrestling we know in england is big daddy, and he just ate lots of brown sauce and belly bounced everyone. everyone knows the way to beat an english fighter, wrestle them

by Totomamma on Dec 19, 2010 6:34 PM EST up reply actions

Kamal Shalorous

can wrestle but I don’t think he is from England. I think he just fights out of England. Not sure though.

by Get Down or Lay Down on Dec 19, 2010 6:40 PM EST reply actions

he's iranian with british citizenship i believe

having said that, he tends to want to stand up more than use his wrestling abilities to win fights…guess thats the english in him

by Totomamma on Dec 19, 2010 7:03 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think Kamal won that last fight

Then again, judges love that lay and pray stuff

by unambig on Dec 19, 2010 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

he beat bart on thurs

drew against varner. i like him. i think if he gets a couple of losses he’ll go straight back to his wrestling, especially in the ufc where you drop three and you’re cut

by Totomamma on Dec 19, 2010 7:09 PM EST up reply actions

*i thought he beat bars on thurs

*i think he won not drew against varner

my internet is being wank

really Gil?

you beat 1 guy who you are now 1-1 with and beat aoki who does’nt even fight in SF and you cleaned out your division

go beat KJ/Alvarez/Evangelista/Calvacante/Beerbohm/

then you can talk

by P86 on Dec 19, 2010 6:59 PM EST reply actions

i think that would be a good fight, alverez vs melendez

surely they could put that on. it would be a great draw and great advertising for strikeforce and bellator

Discussed on Ariel Helwani's show

They have both verbally agreed to pursuing that, I have a feeling Coker is not being completely honest though.

I would love to see Gil in the ufc. Sooo many great match ups there for him

Daley got cut for cheap shotting Kos after the fight was over

LayNHump?, Koscheck ragdolled Daley for 3 rounds, Daley talked shit about Kos’s wrestling background and paid for it. Daley met a guy with an equal douchebag factor, used his superior wrestling to outwork him and Daley being the bigger Assbag, punched him after the bell, btw…I don’t like either fighter. Put Semtex with SF’s resident Douchebag, Nick Diaz and you’ll have another match up of 2 fighters that not many people like and will enjoy seeing them beat each other up

by StealthBomber on Dec 22, 2010 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

hope they match this up

and daley ko his ass, clean out a divsion? how many ppl were in there in the first place, only thompson is relevant is SF and his other 2 wins were from dream guys

by four20 on Dec 20, 2010 5:04 AM EST reply actions

i agree four SF sucks

But those 2 guys from dream he beat were good fighters
