Freddie Roach at work, ladies and gentlemen.

Less than a month after Manny Pacquiao closed up Antonio Margarito's eye, Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre did the same to Josh Koscheck at UFC 124.

Well roach told GSP to beat kos with a left counter hook as he leaps in with the right.

He set them up with jabs for three rounds but it was hooks all day in the 4th and 5th. Just didn’t have the pop in it like Danzig or Daley which played out essentially the way they were gameplanning.

If the round is too close, it's 10-10, NOT flip a coin 10-9 or late takedown FTW.

HAAA!Gsp's a pin ponit striker! KOS fights a conventional stance.

meaning his left eye would be the forward eye, add movement taught against another conventional stance fighter and yet his right eye was the only one that got damaged and no other marks anywhere else on his face. Things that make you go Hmmmm.

Yet, people will try to have you believe that Freddie Roach is responsible for GSP striking when he only spent 2-3 weeks with him in the gym.

regardless..

of whether he spent a lot of time with him or not, freddie roach is clearly the driving force behind such a jab heavy performance.. whether hes there perfecting it with him 24/7 or not everybody knows roach’s gameplan is build everything around the jab and gsp did just that.. id say he helped technique well there, but more so gave him a standup gameplan against how koscheck strikes.. then im sure gsp’s coachs took the reigns and trained him.

GSP started developing a sick jab way back in the hughes II fight.

You are trying to pass speculation off as a fact. Unless you have information that we don’t know about . . . I’ll call this bullSh*t. What? You mean to tell me that Firas Zahabi and Kru Phil Nurse never thought about using the jab, cutting off angles, blah, blah, blah?

What Freddie Roach owns the patent on the use of the jab? Let’s be real. I do recall that Andrei Arlovski spent a week or two with Freddie Roach. END.

But the counter left hook idea was all roach. And plus he works with Howard Grant who’s a very excellent boxing coach too.

Didn't Roach also say GSP would knock Koscheck out via left hook?

Its funny, because he could have easily head hunted with that left and he wouldn’t have seen it coming. I guess GSP knows he doesn’t have that 1hko power. Pretty good prediction on Roach’s part, though.

I thought the same thing about Roach's prediction.

I thought Georges was going to realize it. Kos obviously protected it and kept his right up there because he couldn’t see which made that kill shot harder to land and he wasn’t throwing it much creating fewer counter chances.

by Mayhem chimpanzee on Dec 12, 2010 8:44 AM EST up reply actions

he was looking for it in the later rounds but he didn't chase it.

He was waiting for kos to leap in.

Bullsh*t

GSP had a great jab WELL BEFORE he connected with Freddie Roach. This is pure hype.

absolutely right; just ask “Speed Kill’s” Fitch

by charlyw on Dec 12, 2010 9:51 AM EST up reply actions

he did have a good jab..

but never that good, i dont care what you want to say. the shot he landed so regularly on fitch was the straight right, not the jab, did he use the jab? yeah.. every fighter in mma does, they just dont build around it like gsp did last night.. that was the first mma performance where the jab was the basis to everything he did.

I seem to remember BJ doing this too. I’m not being a smartass, I just can’t remember which fight but he jabbed the hell out of someone. Sherk maybe?

Yes

Don’t apologize you are absolutely correct. BJ Penn jabbed the heck out of Sean Sherk.
That’s pretty much all he did.

Fans are getting so emotional and hyped up about an event, they tend to forget not-so-recent history.

Every fighter uses the jab?
  • First, before anyone gives props to Freddie Roach for GSP skills, you’re totally ignoring Firas Zahabi and Phil Nurse.
  • SECOND, take another look at GSP fights. He used it often against Hughes, Penn, Fitch and even Alves.

Fine, you want to claim this was the first time the jab was employed as the basis for a fight??? Hmmm, I’ll raise you Anderson Silva vs Forrest Griffin and maybe even BJ Penn vs Sean Sherk.

I personally think this is a situation where people get too caught up in the emotion of post-fight event.

Nurse wouldn't be perfecting that jab, who knows with Zahabi.

I agree with you that the jab has been utililzed very well by mma fighters in the past, to control the flow of a fight ( add Kenny Florian to your list against Takanori Gomi ); I disagree that Roach had no influence in that jab though: we’ve never seen GSP jab THAT well at all, it was thrown with perfect technique, as was his left hook, which Roach specifically mentioned as a main training point. Even if it’s two or three weeks, it’s Freddie Roach, inarguably the best boxing trainer in the world right now.

by theworldismine on Dec 12, 2010 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

Ok this is where you’re killing me with your train of thought.
One, I am not stating that Roach had no influence, I’m stating he is not the sole architect of GSP’s jab. Heck Phil Nurse already stated how quickly GSP picks up new things in training, he’s just helping sharpening his skills. Did he have some influence, yeah, sure. He also influence Andrei Arlovski.

Now if you want to claim that 2-3 weeks was the sole reason GSP’s jab was so much better in this performance than others . . . yeah whatever. In my opinion, his jab has always looked sweet. I love watching the simple things that he does.

Freddie Roach is arguably the best boxing trainer in the world? WHAT?!?! Now, I’m not taking anything away from Roach, his charge Manny Pacquiao is doing GREAT! Let’s separate hype from reality for a second. First, are you familiar with the boxers and trainers in the UK and Eastern Europe? I’m sorry, I think its really difficult to argue that he’s the best in the world. Now maybe many people are smelling the hype from HBO and 24/7 but my question is, what do you know about the trainer for Joe Calzaghe? Wait a minute, are you aware of Emmanuel Steward and his history in boxing? He practically trained most significant heavyweight title holders after Mike Tyson.

Now please note, and let’s be real. I’m not saying this coach or that coach is better than Freddie Roach. Comparing the ability to coach or train sounds ridiculous. But if you’re going to say that he’s inarguably the best in the world, give me a reason to agree.

WTF......

GSP didn’t jab fitch’s face 2 death. You people need to go rewatch that fight asap. The right was included more than the jab in that fight. SMH

I think GSP

couldve utilized that left hook even more as well.

by theworldismine on Dec 12, 2010 12:38 PM EST reply actions

Are we comparing Greasy st. P. to the greatest boxer of all time?

First off, Kos hands couldn’t defend the jab period. To even compare Pac to that GSP is just absurd… Let’s just leave it at that!!!

by Pack Leader on Dec 12, 2010 1:45 PM EST reply actions

I think you could say the same thing about Margarito’s defense of that jab.

by Jimbobb on Dec 12, 2010 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

gsp through his punches way more fluid than he ever has since roach trained him. he's looser, has a more effective jab, stays in the pocket, counters the left hook.

i’m pretty sure it was roach that taught him to fight linear as opposed to wide. roach gave pacquiao the same exact gameplan, but in a southpaw stance for the pacquiao vs. hatton fight. loopy hooks get countered by short hooks on the same side.

LOL

Josh Koscheck’s eye made his octagon debut, GSP said he devoloped him to help train Kos. In GSP’s Voice “I made him an eye baby”
