What frustrated me was I was hearing conflicting stories of when he was coming back. One moment Dana would say May then in the article he ... said the fight is scheduled [for] March. Also [Rua's] manager said he will [be] out maybe longer than June. So I was frustrated on how the dates [are] ... ranging. But like I said I chose [to] wait. But [if] I had a clear idea on when the return may happen then it would effect choices I take ... I'm all fighter I'm not afraid [to] fight anybody!"

If you’re quoting someone but you’re somehow altering the words, you mark the changes that you’ve made by using brackets.
In this case, I’m guessing that Rashad was originally using “2” for “to/too”, “b” for “be”, “4” for “for”, etc., in his tweets, so the author “cleaned up” the quotes, and marked his alterations with brackets.
Another case where you’d use brackets: If someone being interviewed says: “He will win back his belt,” and you’d like to indicate whom the interviewee is referring to, you would write “[Rashad] will win back his belt” to avoid confusion.

Chucks fight with Rashad was Chucks tenth year of fighting in the UFC. He was 3 months away from turning 39 and just came off that horrible hamstring injury. Also I think that 3 round war with Wanderlei put a lot of miles on Chuck. Then on top of that Rashad dances around the octagon and trys to catch Chuck for 2 rounds. Chuck was the one pressing the action trying to make the fight exciting Rashad did not want to brawl he just wanted to catch an aging Liddell who in his prime would have KO Rashad in the first.
