"It didn’t hurt at all. You walk off the stage, and the doctor’s like, ‘does anything hurt?’ I’m like, ‘no bro, I feel awesome, I just won.’ Then you go into the back and the doctors ask again like, ‘is anything hurt?’ They sit you down; they’re checking you out. I missed it, the UFC doctors missed it, and we saw a little blood trickling, but neither I nor the doctor had any idea it was as bad as it was. Thank God I didn’t go home like that. Knowing me being me, I wouldn’t have gotten medical attention right away and I would have gangrene and I’d probably lose my foot or something."
UFC light heavyweight standout Phil Davis tells MMA Weekly Radio that a large cut on his shin, suffered in his UFC 123 submission win over Tim Boetsch back on Nov. 20, somehow went unnoticed during his post-fight medical examination at the Palace of Auburn Hills in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. "Mr. Wondeful" needed 36 stitches to close the wound and now looks forward to getting back into the Octagon to continue his ascension through the 205-pound ranks.

Wow, kinda crazy ....i noticed it when he kicked boetsch on
the right arm. There was blood and Tim was confused where it came from. I told my buddy it would suck if he split his shin like Manhoef……not so much but, still hurts i bet.

And considering its on his shin and will heal fast. Seems like a slight exaggeration on just how “devastating” this news really is.

You can stitch in layers. It looks deep so they probably did some internal and external sutures.

If it was a really deep cut, they might have needed to stitch together more than just one layer of tissue, but still…
I have two 4" surgical scars, one from an appendectomy, the other from an ACL surgery. The first one had 15-20 stitches tops, and the other they just put back together with surgical glue and 5 or 6 butterfly strips.

The cut is only slightly bigger then a knuckle on his finger. How the hell is that 2 inches? and how the hell could you fit 36 stitches on that? Is it because it’s on the shin? I had a cut exactly like that just slightly smaller and it took 2!

D-MoB, I explained above that you can do internal and external sutures. It's deep so that's what happened.
