UFC 125: Nate Diaz vs Stun Gun in the works for Jan. 1

Diaz-kim_medium

Not even the most jaded fight fan can ignore this one.

UFC 125 is looking to bring fireworks to the MGM Grand after securing verbal agreements between welterweight warriors Nate Diaz and Dong-Hyun Kim, tentatively scheduled for Jan. 1 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Korea's MFight announced the pending deal yesterday afternoon.

Diaz tinkered with the lightweight division to mixed results before returning to 170-pounds at UFC 111 back in March. It was a move that left nobody second guessing him as he pounded out Rory Markham just three minutes into the opening round.

Another stiff test awaited him in Marcus Davis and it was another one he passed with flying colors. The wily grappler detonated the "Irish Hand Grenade" via guillotine choke to close out their UFC 118 contest last August.

Star-divide

He may be in cruise control since his welterweight return, but that doesn't mean he can coast through Kim, the undefeated Korean import who's made a habit out of stopping win streaks.

After the Karo Parisyan fiasco at UFC 94 that resulted in a no decision, "Stun Gun" posted back-to-back unanimous decision victories over T.J. Grant and Amir Sadollah.

A convincing win over Diaz and it may be time to change his status from "prospect" to "contender."

UFC 125, though not officially announced, is expected to be headlined by division champion Frankie Edgar, as he defends his title in a rematch against undefeated Gray Maynard.

Chris Leben vs. Brian Stann and Thiago Silva vs. Brandon Vera are also expected to be announced for the Jan. 1 pay-per-view in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more updates to this still-developing fight card.

Great fight.

Rooting for Nate, but betting-wise I got Kim by HumpFest.

Pretty good fight, not my 1st choice for Nate.

And being in Nate’s guard for 3 rounds may not be the smartest strategy for Stun Gun.

by BNF on Oct 6, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it's the only strategy. On his feet he would get beat up.

I think he is stronger than Nate and has great wrestling. I got him by decision, Clay, Stevenson and Maynard all did it, so I think he will also.

It also didn't work out well for Maynard the 1st time or Pelligrino.

Stun Gun will get tooled on his feet so his sub defense better be on point.

maynard learn from the first time

He didnt want to be in his guard so he stood up the whole time and got a bullshit decison

Anotonio Mckee and Gray Maynard on the same night? BOY HOWDY!

I hope Volkman and Edgar remember to wear a chastity belt.

A chastity belt is a locking item of clothing designed to prevent sexual intercourse

I know Ant just finished his first fight since the new millenium got started but he’s going to go into this UFC debut so careful. And as much as I am rooting for Frankie, Ol’Gray is going to rub 4 layers of skin of his body by the time 5 rounds whindes down.

My excitement knows no bounds.

And now Kim is going to hump Nate on the same night 0_o. GTFO Zuffa.

Well, Shane’s on the card for sure, and the UFC wants a Carwin/Big Country fight. It’s possible Nelson won’t be ready though, so you might get your wish on a different card. It could shake down that Mir gets Nelson on a different card and Nog is sacrificed to Carwin at 125.

I actually would not mind seeing Nog fight Carwin its actually one of the better match ups for him at HW

Nog is slow as hell now but guess what….Carwin is too!!!(and always has been)So yeah its a simple matter of avoiding the huge shots and connecting with his own.

If you dont like drugs then dont do them.....give them to me!

LOL. When the hell has Nog been able to avoid huge shots. Even in his prime in Japan the guy’s head was a speed bag.

NOGs plan of attack his whole career

has been
A) get the shit beat out of him until the other guys tires
B) somehow survive and get the sub out of nowhere

yea thats how brock beat carwin..but carwin gassed after only bout 3 mins of solid offense before he could no longer move…..

nogs opponents normally take bout 10-13 mins before they gas….so this should be a cakewalk for nogs if you go by his past…

but then again brock’s body hasnt had to endure the punishment nog’s has..so he was easily able to recover in only a minute between rounds…nogs has been beatin down so much its hard to say how much he has left…especially since carwin prolly has the hardest punch in all of mma

FUCKING MYTH!!!!!!!!

The bob sapp, cro cop and timmah fight have made it seem like that’s simply his game. The man has 40+ fights…..what other fight did he completely get his ass kicked and pull out a sub? He can take damage but so what….doesn’t mean he was getting his ass kicked in his other 35 fights….Nog has been outboxing and outgrappling fighters all his career. He’s in the state that he is like wand because he never ever ducked competition and consistently fought only top flight guys for his entire (literally entire career). Which yes especially under pride rules would destroy your body. Ill will admit though i don’t think his chin can handle carwin anymore. But i will not have anyone misrep my boy! WAR NOG!!!!!

it's okay bro

Nog is great. But top 5… he ain’t.

Carwin would cause serious healthy complications to Minotauro. I’d love to see him rematch Mir but thats about it.
Brock, Carwin, JDS or Cain again? Please no.

Never said he was....just said that it's a myth that

he only gets beat up to sub people. He’s the all time #2 and no one can take that from him. Now it’s Cain and JDS’s time. They will be the #1 and #2 for the next decade just like Fedor and Nog held it down for the past one.

his fights against Herring are some of my favs

not that they are anything special in the eyes of every single fan – but it’s like that old first car you ever owned. Not the most dazzling or the fastest thing – but you just love it – and if you could drive it again, youd still get that special feeling.

Anyways back on topic

Can someone/anyone tell Nate that he needs to stay at WW seriously this and many other fights would be for sure wins at WW if he would stop thinking of bouncing around its just plain out stupid hes just going to end up like his bro was being lay n humped for 3rounds he needs to seriously bulk up and stay at WW no more LW.

If you dont like drugs then dont do them.....give them to me!

by Khaos_Warrior on Oct 6, 2010 4:53 PM EDT reply actions

How is staying at WW going to prevent any decent wrestler from grinding him out?

Do you not think that Kos, Fitch, GSP, and yes, Stun-gun, are a million fold better than Maynard, Stevenson and Huggy at grinding guys out?

I think the point being he has looked good at WW and should build on that momentum.

Although, he has not faced any of the WW elite wrestlers. This is actually a very good fight to guage where he is at. Maybe he feels better at WW and will do better here?

by BNF on Oct 6, 2010 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he should put some muscles on and stay at ww.

He is still much too skinny to make it to the top of ww. I can see GSP lifting him up with one arm and slamming him down on the mat. His problem is, to do so he would have to sacrifice some of his speed and base his game more on sound technique which I think he very well has. In today’s mma, mass is critical. To win without it, you need to be quite good. Talking about you Frankie.

Awesome Matchup

I think Nate will again use his reach with strikes to stay out of the clinch of Stun Gun. The clinch is the only area where Kim is really dangerous. Nate will pepper him with the classic “Diaz” fwaps and by the third round leave Kims face annoyingly swollen.

Shogun's knee will explode for the final time when Rashad shoots for the takedown.

I Know Exactly What You Mean.

His (their) attitude pisses me off, but you can tell the guys he’s gonna beat. I hate their striking, but it works. Granted, it wont mean crap for Nick vs Kj, but Nate will see success with his striking vs Stun Gun.

He's right

I was going to say the same thing. Diaz never competed at WW before. Always a LW. I think they’re confusing him with his brother Nick.
