UFC Quick Quote: Jake Shields 'deserves a title shot' and might 'pull a Koscheck' on Georges St. Pierre

5115190295_b7d2e8ca5a_medium

"It was a great feeling because after that fight I knew I put on such a poor performance, I wouldn’t have been surprised at all if (UFC president Dana White) said either (Jon) Fitch or (Carlos) Condit or something for the title shot. I wouldn’t have blamed him at all cause I was so mad at myself for putting on such a bad performance. I think it’s awesome that they’re still giving me the shot. Even though this wasn’t the best performance, I honestly do still feel I deserve a title shot, on a 15-fight winning streak, over some pretty decent opponents. .... I definitely plan on going up to Montreal and be watching to see who I’m fighting. Maybe I’ll pull a Koscheck and bash their hockey team or something like that. There’s a possibility of me fighting him in Toronto in that big 50,000 seat arena or whatever it is. You might as well make them hate you like Koscheck’s done."

Former Strikeforce champion Jake Sheilds (via MMA Weekly) feels he deserves a shot at the welterweight title despite a less than inspiring performance in his UFC debut against Martin Kampmann at UFC 121. He may or may not have been suffering from a back injury and struggled a great deal with the weight cut leading up to the fight. The Vegetarian-American managed to gut out a split decision and company President Dana White has stated his intentions to give him a shot at the winner of Georges St. Pierre vs Josh Koscheck at UFC 124 for his efforts. He's explicitly clear in his belief on who will win that fight and although he's a generally mild mannered guy, he says he has no problem playing the heel against GSP. Does he really deserve a shot at the welterweight crown after such an uneven performance? Or is his track record good enough to overlook it? Have at it, Maniacs.

i wouldnt. i'd stay where i was and dominate. let the boss bring in better comp

What fights do you want to see him in at 185? By your opinion, Andy should have to be at 205 permanently too right? I mean he’s just as dominant. So without that fight who else? Marquardt won’t cause they train. So maybe just Sonnen or what? He’d kill most of the MW’s anyways.

You don't think being the best WW in the world isn't a challenge?

He isn’t even stopping guys. I could see if he was ending fights like Anderson. I would be pissed if I was a prospect WW like Sot or Fitch and GSP thought he should leave the division because I don’t interest him.

By the way, I want GSP to move up too. But if he stays I am cool with it.

thats what i like to hear, just fight your trainingspartners

Not that they are that close but its a start.

But no way GSP loses against Kos. Kos already has proven that “mindless” training wont work.
And gsp is always improving even when he is the best in the world he is just so wellrounded in all area’s that i dont see were Kos can win maybe a overhand right will land that’s the only possibility.

Anderson Silva is by far the number one P4P king!!! Even when he is losing a fight he still comes back and finishes for the win! GSP dominates the whole fight and still can't finish! LOL

Best GNP in the WW division.

It’s a lot easier to stop a guy if you are a HW. They naturally hit harder.

His GNP is much more refined then CAin or Brock, but they stop guys due to the power they have.

you dont have to hit hard for the ref to stop the fight with gnp you remember big country in tuf when he got someone (cant remember his name) in the crucifix and those shots were very lame

Because throwing strikes hard enough to finish a fight would leave open the possibility of getting swept, and GSP can’t get swept and punched.

i hate rematches so i think he MIGHT deserve a title shot but..

I don’t see anyway that Shields (or Kos) for that matter wins that fight. I think GSP is better than him in every way and I think gsp can nullify Shields sub attempts/Kos’ wrestling.

by WallyBallz on Oct 31, 2010 12:18 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

this is mma ANYTHING can happen to say they dont deserve a shot because you dont think they can beat him is ridiculous

I never said he didn't deserve a title shot because I didnt think he could win

I feel he only MIGHT deserve a title shot because he has only won one fight, and for that matter it was extremely underwhelming.

I know its MMA so anything can happen, but to say I dont think he deserves a title shot because I dont think Shields can beat GSP is just wrong. I made my arguement against rematches, then countered my arguement with why I dont think Shields fully deserves a title shot, hence the word “but”.

What is all this about koscheck stuffing gsp’s take downs. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he couldn’t stuff ONE take down. Koschecks take down defense sucks ass compared to his takedown ability which is very good. Koscheck might be able to take gsp down but will have a hard time doing it while gsp takes him down easily. Gsp is a much smarter fighter than Koscheck and will find a way to win, if he doesn’t I’ll be surprised. IF koscheck wins I think it will be by tko if he somehow catches gsp, but with gsp’s movement I really doubt it. Oh and the shields that showed up at 121 would get smoked by gsp, kampman threw that fight away. If he fights gsp he would have to be much better to even make it a competetive fight.
