UFC Quick Quote: Jake Shields 'deserves a title shot' and might 'pull a Koscheck' on Georges St. Pierre
"It was a great feeling because after that fight I knew I put on such a poor performance, I wouldn’t have been surprised at all if (UFC president Dana White) said either (Jon) Fitch or (Carlos) Condit or something for the title shot. I wouldn’t have blamed him at all cause I was so mad at myself for putting on such a bad performance. I think it’s awesome that they’re still giving me the shot. Even though this wasn’t the best performance, I honestly do still feel I deserve a title shot, on a 15-fight winning streak, over some pretty decent opponents. .... I definitely plan on going up to Montreal and be watching to see who I’m fighting. Maybe I’ll pull a Koscheck and bash their hockey team or something like that. There’s a possibility of me fighting him in Toronto in that big 50,000 seat arena or whatever it is. You might as well make them hate you like Koscheck’s done."
Former Strikeforce champion Jake Sheilds (via MMA Weekly) feels he deserves a shot at the welterweight title despite a less than inspiring performance in his UFC debut against Martin Kampmann at UFC 121. He may or may not have been suffering from a back injury and struggled a great deal with the weight cut leading up to the fight. The Vegetarian-American managed to gut out a split decision and company President Dana White has stated his intentions to give him a shot at the winner of Georges St. Pierre vs Josh Koscheck at UFC 124 for his efforts. He's explicitly clear in his belief on who will win that fight and although he's a generally mild mannered guy, he says he has no problem playing the heel against GSP. Does he really deserve a shot at the welterweight crown after such an uneven performance? Or is his track record good enough to overlook it? Have at it, Maniacs.

i wouldnt. i'd stay where i was and dominate. let the boss bring in better comp
What fights do you want to see him in at 185? By your opinion, Andy should have to be at 205 permanently too right? I mean he’s just as dominant. So without that fight who else? Marquardt won’t cause they train. So maybe just Sonnen or what? He’d kill most of the MW’s anyways.

i want to see the superfight
but theres Sonnen,Belfort,Bisping,Maia.Id rather see any of those fights than a pointless ww rematch. He should want to go up anyways, its all about testing urself as a fighter and hes got nothing to prove at ww.

Its not fair that someone be too good for their division and as a prize be forced to fight bigger guys.
nors frank brunos arse
im not saying forced he should want to move up for the challenge.
"whats the difference if Bruce Springsteen is his shidoshi?"
You don't think being the best WW in the world isn't a challenge?
He isn’t even stopping guys. I could see if he was ending fights like Anderson. I would be pissed if I was a prospect WW like Sot or Fitch and GSP thought he should leave the division because I don’t interest him.
By the way, I want GSP to move up too. But if he stays I am cool with it.

He’s only like 29 isn’t he? Him and shogun still have a few years of " prime" left if shoguns knees hold up. As much as I like Andy, he’s past his prime if anyone is. I think he retires at the end of his contract, well he should…

yeah but they couldnt finish him either
he took a monster shot from hendo and still won, nearly got choked the fuck out by miller and still won, both above his weightclass, i’m not really a fan but i will give him his props

thats what i like to hear, just fight your trainingspartners
Not that they are that close but its a start.
But no way GSP loses against Kos. Kos already has proven that “mindless” training wont work.
And gsp is always improving even when he is the best in the world he is just so wellrounded in all area’s that i dont see were Kos can win maybe a overhand right will land that’s the only possibility.

i think fitch, shields and gsp are all a good cure for insomnia
"whats the difference if Bruce Springsteen is his shidoshi?"
GSP lay 'n pray??
I dont understand that. he has beautiful explosive takedowns, (in my opinion) the best ground n’ pound, best guard passing no question.
Using no way as way, having no limitation as limitation.
Best ground and pound? Then why doesn't he finish many by doing that?
Not even close to the best in that area.
Anderson Silva is by far the number one P4P king!!! Even when he is losing a fight he still comes back and finishes for the win! GSP dominates the whole fight and still can't finish! LOL
Best GNP in the WW division.
It’s a lot easier to stop a guy if you are a HW. They naturally hit harder.
His GNP is much more refined then CAin or Brock, but they stop guys due to the power they have.
Brock’s wrestling is more overrated than his 280lbs frame and athleticism. Cain would have outwrestled that ass up and down the mats in pure wrestling all day long and you all know it. Sidenote all hail NNR

Because throwing strikes hard enough to finish a fight would leave open the possibility of getting swept, and GSP can’t get swept and punched.

He doesn’t try to finish, he tries to “stay busy.”
Our lives change like the weather, but a legend never dies.
I dont buy that.
when a guy has a 65% stoppage rate (42.9% since the Serra loss), I find it hard to say he just tried to stay busy.
With better technique he would have finished Hardy as well.

i hate rematches so i think he MIGHT deserve a title shot but..
I don’t see anyway that Shields (or Kos) for that matter wins that fight. I think GSP is better than him in every way and I think gsp can nullify Shields sub attempts/Kos’ wrestling.
by WallyBallz on Oct 31, 2010 12:18 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
this is mma ANYTHING can happen to say they dont deserve a shot because you dont think they can beat him is ridiculous
I never said he didn't deserve a title shot because I didnt think he could win
I feel he only MIGHT deserve a title shot because he has only won one fight, and for that matter it was extremely underwhelming.
I know its MMA so anything can happen, but to say I dont think he deserves a title shot because I dont think Shields can beat GSP is just wrong. I made my arguement against rematches, then countered my arguement with why I dont think Shields fully deserves a title shot, hence the word “but”.
his definately top 5
he may not win exciting but he wins

He should have to earn it.
This is like saying that his wins were over people equal in skill to the UFC. He should have to prove he is better than the current UFC contenders.
It's all about the entertainment.
He’s on a 15 win streak with wins over hendo and miller. IDGAF if it’s a dif weight class.. It’s impressive. He deserves it alright, just so does fitch.

Ok...So say Georges wins against Koscheck...
perfect, feed him Shields…and bing bang boom, WW divisions been all but cleared out, except for maybe Fitch and Condit.
I say the quicker the better, I wanna see Georges in some bigger fights. Slick pun. LOL
It's not the size of the dog in the fight...It's the size of the fight in the dog.
Fitch already had his shot and got the biggest beatdown i've ever seen.

fitchs stand up is garbage though kyle maynard would beat him in a kickboxing match!

Don't know about that his striking is o.k he looked alright with alves
Gsp effortlessly outstruck Koscheck in there first fight, koscheck was the one who tried to take him down if the third round, and could even get it lol. I think koscheck will be going for takedowns much more in this next fight only to get reversed over and over.

GSP's stand-up is just ok??
Just because he doesn’t stand and bang doesnt mean he’s got “just ok” stand up. His punches are very accurate, the best superman punch and the best spinning back-kick in the UFC.
Using no way as way, having no limitation as limitation.
dennis sivers spinning back kick is better
i agree with the superman punch though especially against penn when he hit him with the lead hand instead, that was ace

I meant fitch's stand up is o.k gsp's is good

TORONTO WILL LIGHT UP
No matter WHO is fighting. I’ll be there. I’m so pumped. Shields is a good fighter and GSP is a great champion.
But we all know Kos only has a punchers chance against him…
Don't forget his capabilities as a wrestler...
Seriously, he COULD stuff the takedown, and possibly get one himself.
Proud fan of big boy Brock and Anderson Silva
"Moisture is the essence of wetness, and wetness is the essence of beauty"
LOL
What is all this about koscheck stuffing gsp’s take downs. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he couldn’t stuff ONE take down. Koschecks take down defense sucks ass compared to his takedown ability which is very good. Koscheck might be able to take gsp down but will have a hard time doing it while gsp takes him down easily. Gsp is a much smarter fighter than Koscheck and will find a way to win, if he doesn’t I’ll be surprised. IF koscheck wins I think it will be by tko if he somehow catches gsp, but with gsp’s movement I really doubt it. Oh and the shields that showed up at 121 would get smoked by gsp, kampman threw that fight away. If he fights gsp he would have to be much better to even make it a competetive fight.
"Either way, he's probably not Gay, but if he is, thats one dangerous Fag"-the real ZACK
Gsp is not boring...
He has 8 knock outs or TKO win. 5 submission wins and 7 dec. 13 of 20 wins are finishes…and in the finch and hardy fights he had knock downs and Deep submission atempts. How can you say he’s boring? It’s insane

of the heart and toughness of say zoila “the warrior princess” frausto. same with shlemenko. these people went five rounds and took the punishment and dished it out. the canadians don’t see why we threw lesnar off the train. it’s easy for me to see. the guy can’t take a punch and turtles up. not a true warrior. i’m up 3 wins to 1 loss on him. i’ll keep the rest of my profits from him.
