UFC 127: Jon Jones is sick of double-leg dives and sub-par boxing
Props: FightLine
Quoteworthy:
"I'm actually really sick of fighting this type of style. Matt Hamill, (Vladimir) Matyushenko, Jake O'Brien... they all have that similar kind of style. Their main focus is that double leg dive and sub-par boxing. I'm trying to secure a respect level with my wrestling. I'm sure Ryan Bader, the advantage he'll have going in is to be the better wrestler and I'm going to try and prove the UFC wrong again."
Top light heavyweight prospect Jon Jones tells "Inside MMA" that he's not impressed with wrestlers who rely on diving takedowns and mediocre stand-up as he prepares for an unofficial date with Ryan Bader at UFC 127 on Feb. 5 in Las Vegas. "Darth" defeated his toughest test yet in Antonio Rogerio Nogueira just last month yet in spite of the victory, some fans and critics weren't impressed with his performance. Will he make them a believer with a huge win over "Bones" in Sin City during Superbowl weekend?

who at jacksons has boring lay and pray styles? bones finished all but 2 of his fights, rashad in the last few years had finished some tough guys and we all know finishing rampage isn’t gonna happen, marquardt has 23 finishes in his career to 7 decisions, and gsp may get decisions but he is always looking for a finish.
so now who there actually lay and prays?

Plus they also have
Leonard Garcia and Donald Cerrone. No LnP there.
* "Standing in the ring in whatever condition I'm in is my way of life."
* "I don't think the injury was the cause for my defeat, I lost being in 100% condition at fight day. It's possible that Santiago might have been injured as well, I lost because my best was insufficient, only mortifying thoughts remain now. I think I would've entered the ring even if I lost one of my legs, I'm a fighter who fights, not with technique, but with heart."
--Kazuo Misaki
Rashad, GSP, Nate Marquart, Joe Stevenson, Diego Sanchez.....
The list goes on. Jackson does have some non-wrestlers on his team but the majority, outside those guys you named, are all LnP. Look what he turned GSP into (I know GSP’s primary camp is in Canada but still he trains at Jackson’s). Before GSP went to train at Jackson’s camp, he was one of the most dynamic strikers in the game. Knocking people out or submitting them. We rarely see that in any of GSP’s fights lately.
Since when is Nate Marquardt a wrestler?
And none of the fighters you listed are LnP fighters. LnP implies that a fighter sits in their opponent’s guard and attempts to simply hold them down for the duration of the fight without making efforts to finish or inflict damage. If you think that any of the fighters you mentioned fight that way then you need to go back and rewatch their fights.

I'm pretty sure
he is saying that he is sick of fighting that style. All of those guys that he named, he fought. Ande Bader is pretty much the same fighting style. I myself noticed that he keeps fighting similar fighting styles as well.
Looks like Bones is talking about his own teammate, Splenda rashad evans.

I know.....Jackson camp, ugh
Hopefully Jackson doesnt turn Jones into a boring dominant wrestler and lets Jones be himself. He’s way more exciting that way and I think Jones could be the guy that changes the mindset of good wrestlers who LnP. Like we’ve all said if a guy tries to take you down, the fighter better be good enough to stop it. Jones has done just that and may be the model to beat wrestlers and he’s fought some high level wrestlers, Matt Hamil for one, who he dominated and we all know Jones really won that fight.
i enjoy watching bones fight
but imagine the leverage one could get if they snatched one of those long ass arms or legs….thats bone piercing skin leverage….jeff goldblum fly style!

That's exactly
What I was thinking. Arm bar or kimura would be the first thing to go for. Just a bit of torque and he’d be feeling it in his joints. If there was 205 fighter with Jits at like Maia level he’d be done
by soupdz28 on Oct 4, 2010 1:46 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
They'd have to get the fight to the ground first.
And Maia didn’t have too much luck with that against Silva. With Jones’ reach and wrestling ability I see him being a match-up nightmare for someone with that strategy.

Bones will put a beat down on Bader
"Either way, he's probably not Gay, but if he is, thats one dangerous Fag"-the real ZACK
they have fought very similar competition aside from bader fighting lil nog who is a top 3 lhw going into it albeit should have lost to brilz.
jones is a long limbed fighter, very flashy, with some sick greco throws, ex the bonnar spinning back elbown knockdown, and the slick throws to put bonnar on his head, and powerful precise ground and pound just ask brandon vera, but he proves to be extremely wreckless to get the finish like the hammil fight he lost by dq, but destroyed brandon vera and matyushenko 2 guys with big names in the sport but far from top10
bader is a brock lesnar type, terrible technical boxing with vicious KO power in either hand, powerful double leg, great sub defense, and one of if not the biggest lhw in the world. holding a win over lil nog is an extremely notable thing but lil nog seems to have lost something in his last 2 fights
so the fight should come in even but i give the edge to ryan bader in this one, bones almost looks undisciplined at times and his flashy style will either make him have an extremely short night, or he becomes tentative and we have one of those good old fashioned snorefests when 2 wrestlers meet and don’t wanna throw down.

The issue is see randy is that the gas issues that Bader experiences when his shots get stuffed.
When bader can’t work his standup he auto resorts to winging shots and score points on takedowns but when he can’t get the TDs then just wow it gets ugly real quick. I have to admit that Bader is makin an effort to stay more disciplined in his standup and Bones ever since joining up with Tri Star has been making strikes….right now he just needs to decide where he wants to be a boxer or a muay thai expert. So if the fight is decided on cardio…then Jones all the way. Bader stopped getting meaningful takedowns on a lil nog starting rd 2. Reach advantage also is a big factor in jones fights IMO.But I love the comments that Jones is making here – no more garbage “wars” in MMA where both guys are throwing such winging shots that they look like they’re floating. Right now i don’t think there is a fighter that’s not on an elite level that can handle jones. Everyone else out there can only help him get ring time and exp points not much else. The truly elite he might beat them soon. But we can only guess until we see the fight right;)

Truth....
not anymore but i still imagine that fighters accumulate points with every blow and grappling situation (at least in my head i can see it haha)

I like Jones all day as well...
I think the reach advantage that Jones will have is going to have a big part in this fight. There is an 8 in reach advantage and 2 inches in height, are going to make it a long night for Bader to get in to even touch Jones chin. While Bader may have the better pedigree as wrestlers go, like NNR said, I think a few stuffed shots and Jones cardio takes over. On Top of that Vlad, Verra, and HAmmil are all high caliber wrestlers and they really posed no real threat, at any point of the fight. His unconventional and unorthodox style only adds to the complexity of fighting a guy like Jones. As long as he can keep Bader on the end of that long Jab, I think he will be able to set up a win over Bader.
"My fault, my failure, is not in the passions I have, but in my lack of control of them."
Personally I think Bader real problems will occur when he gets into a clinch with Jon Jones. Jones doesn’t appear to have KO power but Bader doesn’t look like he can really take good shots.
Jones doesn’t look like the same fighter that fought Andre Gusmao, Stephan Bonnar or Jake O’Brien. He’s far more dangerous and that’s not hype.

How were his strikes against hammil wreckless to get the finish? He dominated, was slaughtering with fists and bows and when the ref didn’t stop it he changed up his angles… albeit to something illegal.
Wreckless seems like a bad choice of words.

Not at all
It had nothing to do with respect, it’s a formatting thing, there is a certain “uniformity” we have here with our posts. Keep up the good work and I’ll find you a spot on our roster.

That would be amazing....
thank you very much for the encouragement, that mistake will never happen again
didn’t stop him from using it when he fought vera.

If Bader can get over his cardio issue
He hasn’t been able to so far.
He gets awful after the first round, Eric Schaffer took a round off him.
No way he can keep up with ‘the Jones’es’ ;)
Baders only hope is to land a big overhand in the first round.
Jon Jones LHW Champion 2011
Gray and Pray LW Champion 2011
didnt jones gas vs bonner
i could be wrong but i think i remember bonner winning the third
and after that i havent seen him go to third maybe even 2nd

I don't recall
You might be right, but I don’t remember Jones gassing.
Out of the 2 though, I’d say Jones obv has the better gas tank,
Jon Jones LHW Champion 2011
Gray and Pray LW Champion 2011
He did fade a bit against Bonnar
But that was four fights ago. And his other fights have ended fairly early on, so Jones’ gas tank hasn’t really been tested, but Greg Jackson fighters are usually very well-conditioned.
im interested to see this fight
i like both fighters but i think jones wins, but how i dont know. hamill i thought had best wrestling in lhw division and jones tossed him like a doll, so maybe another tko.
bader does have ko power but jones reach is ridiculous and can probably pick him apart.
stylewise i think a few fighters can give jones a good fight, i thought lil nog had a better chance due to his jits and boxing, also machida and shogun can be interesting for jones, cant wait for some of those fights, machida being elusive is great and jones having reach can play to a good fight also besides getting knocked down i dont think machida has been taken down, machida also has those hard to stuff trips. shogun like always being aggressive works for him and he comes in with power in strange angles, sweeps are good and also great at getting up and fighting off his back.
just my opinions, rampage is another fight i wanna see, winner of machida page should fight winner of bader jones.

Problem is all these guys clinch upper body with Jones.
Box Jones, get close then double or put Jones against the cage Couture style and stay primarily on the legs. That’s the only chance Bader has to get Jones on the ground IMO.
Bones will crush them all
HUghes is gonna beat the crap out of BJ Again! The only chance BJ has of winning is if he switches to Danago’s gym
Bones should stop saying shit like this it will only make me hate him
i think Bader is his first legitamate threat Bones will have to beat him on his feet cause i can see Bader getting up if he takes him down
wow sounded a little cocky but i like it
But he has fought vera who is a decent kickboxer and he chose to take it to the ground, so he should stop complaining and continue to smash these wrestlers

This sounds like a loaded dismissive insult. And I like it.
Jon Jones has simply showed and proved.
He basically dismissed Matyushenko before they stepped into the ring but then realized that he was approaching the fight with the wrong attitude.
Now his true feelings are once again being revealed.
Ryan Bader, Jon Jones is simply not impressed.
Sub-par boxing . . . LMFAO

What did he say about Matyushenko?
My impression of Jones was that he always went out of his way to be respectful and humble so I was a bit surprised by this quote. But if he dissed Vladdy prior to this, maybe I just didn’t read enough of his interviews.
I think Bones is just sick of facing wrestlers
Bader will be his third wrestler in his last 4 fights, I think Bones want to challenge his striking skills against better strikers
"Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth - Mike Tyson
He didn’t diss Matyushenko, he simply said that he wasn’t really excited or motivated about facing him. Maybe the word dismiss is too strong. He wanted tougher competition. Then he later stated that The Janitor was indeed a tough test of his skills.
In retrospect, his first voice simply spoke his truth. He was well prepared and it showed. Matyushenko offered no competition whatsoever. Bader’s striking is definitely sub-par and his best chance defeated the long-limbed Jones will be if he connects with a lucky haymaker. Bader’s striking did not look like much against Noguiera. Bader can engage Jones in a clinch all he wants but I would be wary of any fighter that can man-handle Matt Hamill the way Jon Jones did.

I think the winner should get a shot at the belt
"Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth - Mike Tyson
Not the winner of Page-Machida? If not, what do you do with the winner of that fight?
"I'm not superstitious, but I am a little stitious."-Michael Scott
That would work too
But shogun and Evans are suppose to fight early next year as well and either way they should have a challenger for mid year. Otherwise that takes the winner of the Bones-Bader and Page-Machida fight out of the picture. Plus both Page and Machida are coming off a loss and the winner should have to win at least two fights after their fight before they get another shot?
"Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth - Mike Tyson
I agree
i think they should fight the winner of Page-Machida!
And thats fine but who should face the winner of Rua and Evans with all these guys out of the picture?
"Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth - Mike Tyson
I think the winner should get a title shot then have the winner of page and machida fight randy for the next one

ssshhhhhhh
keep it down Jon, the ufc is trying to protect you, dont blow the whistle.
LOL yeah trying to protect him by facing a man that just beat a experienced top calibure fighter in Lil Nog.
Bader and Jones are the two best young LHW fighters in MMA and the winner of this is in title picture ssshhh
"Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth - Mike Tyson
yes but after3 fights all against the same type of fighter (kinda like chuck fighting wrestlers in his hay day), plus his style is the same as previous fighters As Bones himself admits……he has essentially been training for the same “guy”, cept that “guy” gets better after each fight.
Its all good ufc wants to protect him and build him up…very common.
Who are they going to give him that is proven better than Lil Nog
If you haven’t noticed wrestlers are doing well in MMA right now, much like the JJ artist were 6 years ago. He had a differnt style of fighter in the middle of these guys in Vera and destroyed him as well. Who else that is better than Bader should he fight? It’s about facing the best possible and right now BAder is that man.
"Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth - Mike Tyson
I'm glad that someone other than Cole Miller is calling out wrestling
and this time it’s a wrestler (well someone with a wrestling/greco background)
we’ll see if he can back it up against Bader..he’s been successful so far.
Props to the ufc for actually seting this match up mostmma fans didnt expect this match up to happen until one of them held the belt. as for the qoute jones is right he hasnt faced a top notch striker yet other then the brief exchange with vera i would love to see him vs machida or shogun in the future.
I would love to see Jones-Machida.
Stylistically, that would be an extremely intriquing fight.

He obviously took a shot at Bader
but I think he is right about diving double legs and mediocre standup. While Lil Nog said he was going to give Bader his first loss, I do believe JBJ will make that happen.
