Minotauro' Nogueira: 'Chael Sonnen is a kid' who 'lacks respect

Silva_sonnen_medium

Props: Sherdog.com

Quoteworthy:

"I loved it. I had to call to Wanderlei to congratulate him. I always get along well with Wanderlei. Whenever we train in Las Vegas, we go to his gym. Yesterday, I had to congratulate the guy, because he has the right attitude. Sonnen is a kid who does not know what he’s talking about, who thinks it’s cute to do this type of marketing. Sonnen is a guy who never practiced a martial art in his life. He doesn’t know what respect or leadership is. He never respected any teacher, so he said those things. He’s a guy who has no respect for anything. Wanderlei gave him an earful at the right time, and I was pleased. After the fight with Anderson, Sonnen has apologized for the comments he made toward us. I think marketing yourself is fine, but what he said indicated a real lack of respect toward us.... Sonnen was totally wrong. It was a great lack of respect toward us. The guy talked too much, and even though he was doping, he still lost to Anderson. Even with Anderson hurt and Sonnen doped, Anderson still defeated him. God is just."

Former Pride FC and UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira continues to pile it on top of former number one middleweight contender, Chael Sonnen, after a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs. In the run up to his fight with Anderson Silva at UFC 117, Sonnen went to great lengths to discredit the Brazilian black belt that the "Spider" earned under the Nogueira brothers, saying it came in a McDonald's Happy Meal. He also called one Nogueira a punching bag and the other irrelevant. With his comments, Sonnen appeared to anger the entire Brazilian fighter community, including Wanderlei Silva, who warned that he might lose his teeth if he didn't start showing more respect. Is all the Sonnen bashing getting a little out of hand or is karma really just a bitch?

Really dislike the Nogs these days.

by frosnt1 on Oct 3, 2010 9:05 AM EDT reply actions

Why so?

I think tho he lost, Lil Nog is still a credible opponent, tho Big Nog should just retire. He’s left a legacy, sit back and enjoy it before you have to get someone to change your diaper for the rest of your life(if its not to late already).

Chael was all an act, people need to relax. His plan obviously worked, cus all the Brazilians got upset.

That being said, the patriotism the Brazilians show is pretty cool.

Sonnen would beat W.Silva btw, as sad as that statement makes me.

by RayRayJr on Oct 3, 2010 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions

It is sad

A street fight/bar fight – Wand everytime but not in an MMA fight, not now.

by attakdog on Oct 3, 2010 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Why...

Would Wand win in a bar fight but not in the cage?? Would a couple beers somehow restore his chin?? Are you not allowed to pick someone up and dump them on their head in a licensed establishment?? Explain yourself.

by LAF on Oct 3, 2010 10:17 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I forgot it was the weekend

I’ll try make it simple – Wand = heavy handed brawler. Sonnen = Pillow fisted wrestler.

When have you been involved/witnessed a bar fight that involved a double leg takedown and 15 minutes of dry humping? Everyone I’ve ever witnessed/been involved in = trying to land as many crazy punches as possible before the police arrive, which kind of sounds more up Wanderlais street wouldn’t you say

Watch your ass Danago. It should be easy enough, because I can see it all the way from Texas. I have already proven that my MMA knowledge is all encompassing, while yours isn’t ish. Keep it up, and I will beat you into yet another humiliating defeat that leaves wallowing and crying in your maple syrup.

by P-Dub on Oct 3, 2010 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

well...

I was more or less joking, didn’t expect this dongo “I’ve seen chael fight on the street” doucher to go off on one. But to your point about bar fights just being about haymakers I would say that’s generally true when the participants are two dumb drunks with no real fighting ability (as is most often the case) but when the fight involves two skilled fighters its really gonna be more about self defense and neutralizing your opponent than just all out brawling. Chael is hardly just gonna stand in the pocket and swing wildly when he realizes the power he’s up against. If he beats him in the cage, he beats him in the bar. He doesn’t just lose his mind and stand there like a punching bag.

by LAF on Oct 3, 2010 10:38 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

You're wrong there pal,

there just isn’t the space in a bar environment to practice an effective wrestling game now is there??? It’s just a wild testosterone/beer fuelled slugfest to see who can land the most blows before they get broken up. It aint technical in the slightest, all that goes out of the window.

by attakdog on Oct 3, 2010 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

You’re right, although there can still be an element of technical maneuvering, especially by experienced guys. Yeah, people switch over to using their gross motor skills, but the ability to stay calmer than the typical guy, having a lower heartbeat and all around better composure, enables pro fighters in particular to have more wits about them, therefore having a fight which will most likely be sloppy, but will still be, in a lot of cases, more technical than a typical barroom brawl. But not always.

by Jackanapes on Oct 3, 2010 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah. Either way, it's still different, to some extent, than an MMA fight.

It’s an interesting discussion anyway. I think LAJ made a good point to question it, even though I’m leaning closer to your point of view, because I too think Wand would brutalize Chael in a street fight.

Yeah, I think he tried to pull off a triangle from the bottom and the other dude picked him up and dumped him on his head or something.

I’m not certain, it’s a bit hazy. But that was not an all out brawl. It seemed a little lackluster if I recall correctly.

It was Marlon “300” Sims vs. some dude I can’t remember. Monstah Lobstah instigated the whole thing, with a lot of help from Senor Cuervo.

Agreed but I still remember laughing at how technical it was for a street fight, with attempted armbars and whatnot.

sure maybe the nogs are no longer prime..

at least there is a legacy behind them..and i have no love for sonnen’s “act” of smack talk..it shows how weak he is in spirit..though i was impressed with how he worked a hurt anderson over , i can never really be a fan of this guy..he is just too full of shit.

by sarah- on Oct 3, 2010 12:27 PM EDT reply actions

I agree, Sarah. There’s one thing to “act” in order to get publicity or whatnot, but to say completely ridiculous things and still make out you’re an honest and genuine guy is just idiotic. I mean, he’s said before that he doesn’t trash talk and what he says is sincere and from his heart and is just how he feels. That he means what he says.

So when he said he never lost at middleweight, he meant it? And did he also mean it when he disrespected Machida by saying the 205 lb division is weak for having a karate guy as a champion? And all other fighters are cowards because they didn’t want to fight Anderson? And Anderson ducked him for four years?

And that’s only a fraction of the shit he’s said. It’s amusing because it’s so fucking stupid and he’s another weird kind of character. But he deserves all the criticism he gets. And Wand and the Nogs are right.

MMA needs to be about respect...I get why sonnen sells his fights so hard

but I agree with mino here…you can sell a fight, but you can also be disrespectful towards others, and he was…love or hate anderson silva, he kept it pretty clean and respectful…considering MMA isnt even legal in all 50 states, its best if MMa comes off as a sport with integrity.

I like everything about chael

1) he doesnt give a shit what anyone thinks about him
2) he has no feel out process, he goes right at his opponent with unbelievable pressure
3) he doesnt care to hug his cornermen before the fight
4) he recognizes hes not the most skilled but he is as tuff as they come

they guy desicively beat marquardt & okami and still tested clean. He will beat the hell out of A sliva with or without ped’s. So he made a mistake big deal, Im a fan and I am looking forward to see him as he says in a fist fight hopefully soon

and in reply to nogurias comment for a guy who doesnt know a martial art he sure does dominate with ease so called mixed martial artists

Wanderlei is the most aggresive/brutal fighter ever in the game. I hope Chael never gets in a bar fight with Wanderlei because a life sentence would mean no more UFC fights. Chael would get stomped out in the streets or in the octagon. Wanderlei wouldnt let him implement his game of takedowns and lay n pray Wanderlei would bum rush Chael and Rape choke that fool. Wanderlei wants his suspension to be lessended so he can run train.
