A fantastic featherweight fracas is brewing between two of the sport's best 145-pound warriors as newly recognized UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo will likely defend his belt against surging division prospect Josh Grispi at UFC 125 on Jan. 1 in Las Vegas.
Ariel Helwani brought word of the pending match-up earlier today.
Grispi was scheduled to fight Erik Koch at WEC 52 on Nov. 11 but is expected to be pulled from his duties should his bout with "Junior" become official.
Aldo (18-1) has been nearly invincible in the 145-pound division, running through Cub Swanson and Mike Brown to capture the WEC featherweight title. The Brazilian's first championship defense was a dominating unanimous decision victory over Urijah Faber, earning him a spot on the pound-for-pound rankings.
His devastating second round knockout of Manny Gamburyan just last month would only further solidify that position.
Grispi would like to put a dent in Aldo's hype train. "The Fluke" has also made a name for himself in the featherweight division, defeating the likes of Mark Hominick, Jens Pulver and most recently LC Davis. Grispi has a record of 14-1, with his only loss in December 2006 when he was 18 years old..
UFC 125: "Resolution" will be the first Zuffa event of 2011. In the main event, Frankie Edgar looks to successfully defend his lightweight title and get revenge on the only man to hand him a loss, Gray Maynard.
Also on the card, Chris Leben will try to extend his winning streak to four in a row as he meets Brian "All American" Stann. Clay Guida will look to knock off Japanese sensation and former Pride lightweight champion Takanori Gomi.
