Hi hater: Todd Duffee doesn't understand why you would hate Brock Lesnar

Ept_sports_mma_experts-25937-1247532858_medium

From the Underground (via Bloody Elbow):

"I do not understand why people think if he loses his next fight he will walk away?  I am not a fan nor do I hate the guy I think he has been very beneficial for the sport of mma and has earned his place with in the sport.  It just bothers me that people tear this guy down so much when he clearly is dedicated and has the tools to be great.  I honestly was rooting for cain(underdog shake up the division sounded fun) but the hate that brock has received is mind boggling and sickening. Can't we just be happy he went out an bared his soul in front of the whole world after committing his entire life to that moment against cain for four months prior.  I don't get it any more the dude deserves everyones respect whether you like him or not."

Todd Duffee, a heavyweight prospect who was released from the UFC last month, speaks on the outcry amongst fans and media alike against Brock Lesnar after his first round drubbing at the hands of Cain Velasquez at UFC 121. Brock entered the fight with an aura of invincibility that Velasquez quickly stripped away with a barrage of punches that the big man could not withstand. After the loss, certain members of the media speculated as to whether or not Lesnar would decide to take his loss and go home. Duffee, despite Lesnar's track record, thinks the media needs to back off. Should we do just that or should we all be one big happy family as Todd wants us to be?

Duffee is an idiot IMO

but i agree. people need to relax. Its the people who thought Brock was unbeatable that are the problem. Most of us knew he wasnt and just wanted to wait and see. Alot of us were agreeing that he couldve prob beat Carin, Cain and JDS in sequence but it woulda been hard. Didnt happen obviously but thats not an easy road for a green horn like Brock. Guys still a warrior and when he fights Mir again (ugh) hell get some much needed confidence back.

The more you educate yourself the more you understand where things come from the more obvious things become and you begin to see lies everywhere. You have to know the truth and seek the truth and the truth will set you free.

EXACTLY

It’s really not Brock that is the problem. It’s the fanboys that labeled him the next coming of christ after 4 UFC wins….4!

In hindsight, Brock ain’t so bad.

Brock will whip Mir…whip him.

Now to answer the question on who I think the best wrestler/grappler Fedor has faced is CC in my mind.

Thats true SD. Truthfully I hate talking with people in person and seeing comments online after big fights. The winner is always great and a beast and people have been calling it, the loser is always overrated, done and was a never has been. Seriously, cant we just talk about the fight, talk about where each fighter goes from here, etc.

Cain was the better mixed martial artist. Size doesnt always prevail.

by AintNoSunshine on Oct 27, 2010 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

There are not to many grapplers on his level period in MMA's HW division

grappling is what got him to this point but in the UFC. Carwin and Cain are levels ahead of any other fighter in the UFC so comparing how Brock did agaisnt them to anyone else is naive.

As it turns out StrikerDave was right all along and I was horribly wrong, and now I am crying like a little schoolgirl. After all my loudmouthing Brock Lesnar has no chin, no striking, no practical wrestling, no TDD, no heart, and no valid excuse for being this terrible, I just was too blind/stupid to see it.

That is a ridiculous comment.

Different fighters bring different things into the octagon. He should be compared to every HW mixed martial artist. That’s who he has to fight!

Carwin stopped him the whole first round and beat him down.
He beat up a fresh Brock Lesnar, and Lesnar subbed a gassed Shane Carwin.

Brock doesn’t like to be hit and does not defend well once he catches a shot to the head.
It’s going to be his downfall.

yeah and Carwin and Cain ahve pretty much walked through everyone they faced

Now i want to take back the anyone else part….to most HW’s and maybe all others. Now with saying that yes he needs to fight other competition rather than Mir!! To improve his skills and get tested in other areas. Nobody’s unbeatable but losing the way he did Cain the way he did doesn’t mean another fighter will be able to do the same to him. Thats all I was trying to get at. Working at the same time as debating doesn’t always work.

Not entirely true since he did beat Carwin. I think his striking will improve maybe not enough to compete at elite levels vs guys with great TDD and hands like Cain. But shit man, you gotta appreciate the mans story. He started MMA in his 30’s and became relevent in the sport. He has only helped MMA.

A couple of thoughts from my POV-

I don’t really buy in to the whole “new, humble Brock” thing. He refers to himself in the 3rd person. Can you name one humble, non-douchebag that does that? I do appreciate the fact that on the surface he appears to be working on his image. I have to respect the fact that he’s trying to change. I have people in every sport that I “hate”(and let’s be honest, obviously we don’t know the guy, so we don’t hate him in the same way that we would hate an ex, or an old friend that screwed you over). Brock is that guy in MMA for me. I don’t like the way he acts, I don’t like the way he talks about himself, and I don’t like the way people talk about him. That’s just my personal opinion.

All that being said, no, he doesn’t suck. He’s a great athlete, and he has maxed out his God-given abilities. I never thought he was as good as some people claimed, but that doesn’t mean that he sucks either. He is still very new to the sport, and if he stays focused, who knows what will happen. You can “hate” someone and still see their athletic merit.

(I feel the same way about Tom Brady, for example. I just think he’s a douche, and I love to root against him. WTF has he ever done to me? Nothing, but that doesn’t change the fact that I can’t stand the guy.)

Please go back and look at all the great QB's and who they were throwing to.

Then look at Tom Brady’s WR’s from 2000 until they signed Moss (with whom they have won nothing). What do you see? Brady is the only three time superbowl winner without a HOF WR.

New England’s offensive system is nothing special, except for the QB.

New England’s coaching staff’s ability to milk every ounce of talent out of their team from 2001-2006, combined with the ability to lure quality veterans that believed what they were selling (and knew how to win), was extraordinary.

You’ll notice that since they got caught cheating, and since the core of their defense isn’t there, the Pats haven’t been winning the big one.

There style's also led to problems for their defences

not being able to rest as much and the Dolphins had a pretty good squad on D. Manning manages the game very well and is control of the offence and rarely has the Colts D on the field much longer than their opponets and his D is not that good. Brady on the other hand does what he is told from a great coach and had a great D to back him up.

When Herring and Mir spend months talking about how this isn’t fake fighting and belittling everything Brock had done to that point, regardless of what you think of ‘rasslin, and then he owns them in the cage, why shouldn’t he give it back to them?

No I mean winning isnt enough. Not shit talking wise. But i mean in MMA winning isnt always enough. Shields was guaranteed a title shot, then wins but loses.

Herring and Mir trashed on Brock hardcore calling his past profession a joke, they were going to do this do that and then when Brock wins of course he will have an adrenaline dump. Not even Brock likes to be belittled and ridiculed.

You don’t hear the question asked, but Brock looks at the camera and says, “Hey Cain, how about after I whoop your ass I eat a burrito and drink a Corona to celebrate your heritage.” Maybe this was just frustration at being asked about Cain’s heritage, but it actually came off really bad.

I really don't see how that is apples and apples Pucky

Fedor actually spent a career earning those labels. Brock is a newb, yes, he is a beast, but with such a limited resume- it was asinine to think that we could accurately say how he would fair against different kinds of fighters. Fedor had faced every type of fighter and beat them at their strengths. Not saying I think anyone is god, but that is where I see the distinction.

Fedor has definately earned most of his accolades. People just got their panties in a knot cuz hes not in the UFC and isnt fighting top comp every day. It pisses me off too and it makes him slide a bit in my eyes but you cant take away from what hes already accomplished.

Fedor is the greatest ever but his past accomplishments mean little with the best today

Werdum is the best current day fighter Fedor has faced and he lost. JDS, Brock, Cain, Carwin, Mir and Overeem were all ranked as better fighters and these guys are the current day best. I’m not saying Fedor would lose either but he needs to prove it.

I just don't see that

Yes, he had some questionable guys, but he has fought the best available. As much as we want to dismiss AA and Timmay- they were at the top of the pile when he fought them. To say they are cans (then) is a bit silly to me. The Tire Guy- yes, that was a silly fight and that guy didn’t deserve to be in there with him.

It was a “worlds collide” type of fight.

Was the former UFC champ as good as the former Pride champ.

How about a more athletic, more epic-ly bearded (more than Brocks) Russian (so he isn’t afraid of the russian mystique) AA do.

Barnett is one of my fauvorites so that could be a reason

That I disagree with

Tim fought for the UFC title in his last fight before fighting Fedor. If a guy who just fought for the belt in the biggest promotion in the world didn’t deserve him, who does?

AA was on a 5 fight win streak over good opponents (Rothwell, Nelson, Werdum) and was also ranked top 10 when he fought Fedor.

Tim lost to NOG, Couture and Mir before he left the UFC

These are guys many of the Brock haters try and bring down agaisnt Brock. I wathced of coarse but these guys are not on the level of Mir let and thats my point they are not top level competition. Overeem also needs to face better fighters but his are on the same level as Fedors as of late besides Werdum of coarse

Todd Duffee

Maybe if he asks nicely, Dairy Queen will give him his old job back?

In fighting and everyday life you should be determined, though calm. Meet the situation without tenseness, yet not recklessly; your spirit settled, yet unbiased. An elevated spirit is weak, and a low spirit is weak. Do not let the enemy see your spirit.

The way I see it:

The Dana moment is when he can’t look Brock in the eyes. It’s not that he is pissed, the humor in the gif is that Brock is sad that Dana wouldn’t look at him.

Duffe has been to too many 'fiestas' and found his own ship sink not too long ago.

Lesnar was good at pointing his finger at the opponents he defeated and rubbing it in that he was the ‘baddest man on the planet’. His demeanor and whole arrogant attitude is what turned most people against him. Now, the whole MMA community is shaking their finger in lesnar’s face….your past will come back to haunt you….for sure!!!

by coyoteye on Oct 27, 2010 4:15 PM EDT reply actions

Duffee is a class act

And a good fighter.

I’m glad he came out and said this. Now I’m not a Brock lover by any means, trust me. I resent him for many of the braggart claims he made, and for having a glass jaw. But I’ll give him credit for his effort and raw talent, which I’m sure we’ll see back in the cage at some point.

But Duffee is just trying to get us all to have a more respectful discourse about all this, and about fighters in general. I appreciate him coming out and saying it the way he did, and I also hope to see him in the cage again himself in the near future.

by QuickJack on Oct 27, 2010 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

Did I miss something?

Have there been scores of MMA pundits and analysts calling Brock a sissy and saying he should go back to WWE. Posters on forums may be, but people say stupid shit on forums all day every day.

Is it wrong to say Brock was destroyed, exposed or that he doesn’t respond well to punches to the face? Is it wrong to speculate on how he will rebound?

I fail to see any Brock bashing from anyone that should be listened to. Maybe Brock’s WWE fan converts are still a little sore from Saturday night.

by Anton Chigurh on Oct 27, 2010 7:52 PM EDT reply actions

Brock obviously thought that he had trained good for the fight, And he obviously got the crap beat outta him. It happens people…. I think that Brock will never have truly effective stand up, he should get back to what he is comfortable with and that is his ground game. I think that he gave up on it to fast in the fight, after he took Cain down and Cain popped right back up. He’ll be back.

by STLMMA on Oct 27, 2010 8:14 PM EDT reply actions

I didn't care much for the WWE heel act

but give credit where it’s due. The guy strolled into the HW division with very limited MMA and really made a splash. Obviously, his last two matchups didn’t make him look like a worldbeater but he certainly proved he is more than Frank Mir gave him credit for. I’m with Deuce…..it’s frustrating to see all the “experts” come out of the woodwork after the fact.
Everybody loses. Brock has work to do. I’m not even a huge fan but I can’t argue with the incredible athleticism and committment to the sport.

You're DEAD at recess.
