Does Jake Shields deserve a title shot with split decision win at UFC 121?

Mma_shields_kampmann1x_576_medium

UFC President Dana White still seems to think so:

"How could you not be impressed with his performance? He had a tough guy in Martin Kampmann -- Martin Kampmann is no joke. When you come [into the UFC] -- and I don't care where you've been, who you've fought or what you've done -- the guys who you fight in the UFC fight the best in the world three times a year. These guys are no joke and he kept his composure. Yeah, you know, Jake's in the mix. I don't think any less of Jake Shields today than I did yesterday."

It’s not an all-out vote of confidence, but White appears to be sticking to his pre-UFC 121 guns, saying that former Strikeforce and Elite XC champion, Jake Shields, deserves a shot at UFC championship glory despite a not-so-dominant win in his Octagon debut over Martin Kampmann. In his defense, Shields — who has won an incredible 15 straight fights — indicated that a tough weight cut and debut jitters likely contributed to his performance against the "Hitman." But is that a good enough explanation? White made a similar promise to Jon Fitch before and after his most recent win over Thiago Alves, only to turnaround and promise the same prize to Shields. So now that the results are in will White book a true number one contender match between Shields and Fitch or will he really hand Shields the winner of division champion Georges St. Pierre and Josh Koscheck just like that?

Hey Fitch deserves it more than anyone but dana ain't gonna let it happen.......

so Shields it is. Aside from him, the next closest contender is freaking lytle or the winner of BJ-Hughes. Regardless they’ll be woodchip once they’re put through the GSP.

I woulda been pretty honored to be front paged

If I had actually wrote ANY of this! I said he doesn’t deserve a shot and looked horrible. Also he alluded that it wasn’t the weight cut on mmalive and it was something else. I said give him Chris Lytle, a very good stand up, decent wrestling and has shown really respectable BJJ lately!

I was very unimpressed

(add French accent as needed) I think ghis fight was clear proof judging needs to be changed. Take downs where you do absolutely nothing, infect you get caught in submissions shouldn’t earn you points. He literally accomplished nothing the entire fight. Should have worked morr on his training and less on his tan

Fight the power Kev

Jake looked poor but he did enough to win, Kampmann did some damage but was controlled for the whole fight, didn’t come close to submitting Jake and was the one being put in dangerous positions. If Jake had better cardio then he may have done more to finish, personally I think that it was the tough cut and the training injury that led to him gassing so quickly. After that display he needs to do more to secure a title fight, because GSP will destroy him if he performs like that but I wouldn’t go so far as to give Lytle a chance at beating him as Chris rarely does well against dominant wrestlers despite his very good BJJ. Like I said before make Shields-Fitch the next title contender fight, both guys have similar skill sets, both have excellent records and both are in the mix for a title shot.

thats very true, kevin

but obviously he had a bad cut, he even addmitted it last week.. jake usually doesn’t look that bad(cardio wise)…

i would love to see jake vs lytle, but thats mostly cause i love watching chris lytle fight regardless……in no way do i see chris winning that fight. jake has a solid chin and lytle doesn’t do good against wraslters..

jake will fight someone else before he gets his title shot & all his fans will run back when he dominates fitch.. not only will jake beat fitch, he will finish him… all jake needs to do is get back in WW shape…

Lytle is 6-2 going back to 2008. He needs a step up in competition to get into the title mix unless Dana and the brass are content to just give him guys that will produce FotN material instead of giving him a chance to move up. Hell, he was one questionable split decision against Serra from getting a title shot a couple years ago.

lytle doesn't want a step up....

he just wants guys who’ll bang with him. He stopped caring about being an elite fighter after the hughes fight. As far as Shields though i don’t buy the bad weight cut bull…….he showed the same problems he’s always had liek horrible takedowns (at least the penetration shots), improved jab but below average standup, and terrible positioning in the clinch, and gassing in the later rounds when TDs don’t work. Alves or fitch or Kos would pretty mcuh wreck him.

I’m a little pissed, nay, a lot pissed, but I’ll deal. His offensive stand-up looked better than it has in the past, but defensively Brock has no idea what to do. Cain stayed calm and countered in the exchanges while Brock covered and tried to escape. His trainer needs to put him in a small closet-sized cage, tie his hands together and let someone stand in there throwing punches at his face until Brock learns to avoid punches with proper boxing movement instead of cartwheeling around the ring.

I just want both you and Cali to admit that i was right

that Cain would stop Brock’s first, freshest and strongest takedown. Once it happened i jumped up because that was it for Brock. Kept telling me brock was a better wrestler when he wasn’t. it was all in the details boys…..push the head and standing up in base, breaking the hand and rolling right to break grips, small adjustments completely shut down brock’s control and wrestling. In fact cain gave those two TDs simply because Brock has the wingspan of a fucking plane and was able to get his hands around his knees despte cain basing his legs out as far as possible.

i seem to remember a single leg takedown followed

by riding him on top while punching his face. Brock has one single move and that’s it. When the fight started he circled to clear as much distance then get the wheels going on the freight train and still couldn’t bulldoze over cain. Rewatch the fight and tell me who had the better wrestling because to me it was Cain all day. Also cain was all defense thanks to brock wall n stalling……see what happens when couture helps you out in camp. hahaha

That would take a lot of planning and patience on Danas part to prove something that everyone already knows, to the very few people who actually care about UFC vs Strikeforce.

Im sure DW wasn't impressed with Shields, but he's backing him up b/c he has to sell the title fight.

we’re gonna start hearing Dana hang off Shields nutsack for the next while so ppl will buy into it and buy the title-shot PPV. Dana is good at convincing ppl of ridiculous shit (like Fedor sucks and Brock is the #1 HW).
Sidenote: Everyone laughed at me when we did the consensus rankings here and i didnt put Brock in the top 3 HW’s. Hype.

So, if Kos wins DW’s gonna try to get Fitch a title shot. That’s why we wont see Fitch scheduled to fight until after Kos-GSP. That’ll start up a shitstorm and Im sure Fitch will get his walking papers.

I told you Shields wasn’t a top 5 WW. Kinda funny about the weight cut because the samething happen to Hendo when they fought. Kampmann did the same thing Mayhem did. On another note, I’d rather they give Shields the shot at GSP, simply because I’m sick of seeing rematches, and giving Shields the Fitch fight first is too big of a risk, because Fitch could beat him.
As for the talk about Lytle, I wouldn’t mind seeing him throw hands with Paulo or Hardy now. Diego should fight Pyle. Condit should rematch Kampmann.

I agree that Alves should be 3. Hardy before Daley though! I saw him fight in Montreal, the guy is a joke. So 1 dimensional! Fitch deserves the shot. He was already told he’d get the title shot if he beat Alves and he did. Yeah, they did say that...

but I think they changed their minds when Fitch was unable to finish Alves. Which I can kinda understand; sure Alves is one of the best in the world at WW, but he was coming off a one year+ layoff and was having weight issues, and Fitch still couldn’t put him away.
On the flipside, this was Shields’ first fight at WW in a long time. I get the whole “he’s a grown man and is aware of the weight class he’s fighting in” etc etc, but I’m sure it takes time to readjust to a weight you haven’t be at in a while. Plus, cutting 20 pounds the night before the weigh-ins, and still getting the win: that’s impressive.

The guy who knocks people out and stays active on the ground while sustaining a great cardio. Thats who it is.

Because...

… takedowns and control is not enough. Kampmann is the only one who did any significant damage. Kampmann is the only one who came close to a submission. You shouldn’t be awarded a win for hugging your opponent for three rounds.

takedowns and control shouldn’t be enough. Or at least shouldn’t be the determining factor when other, more significant things, happen in the fight.

I agree

I’ve never seen a fighter be able to mount his opponents on a consistent basis and not be able to do anything with such a dominant position like Jake Shields. He mounted Hendo, Mayhem, and even mounted Kampman multiple times and as always doesn’t do anything with it but lay on top. The sooner this guy starts losing and gets cut from the UFC the better he is an A+ Wrestler but the rest of his game is trash

He gassed....

He does better at 185.

And lol at anyone who thinks failmann won, he got layed on every round.

30-27 Shields.

But yeah, his “standup” is as horrible as Lesnars, why is it so hard for these guys to even become decent on their feet?

Thats was pretty bad,

I thought Kamp won that fight, he was way more active. If they do give Sheilds to GSP he better come stronger and in better shape than he was last night, George will slaughter the Jake Shields that showed up last night.

GSP is not afraid to take a punch, he just admittedly prefers to keep the fight in his realm. He is a fighter.

Who’s your favorite UFC HW now? Cain or JDS? Or are you going to wait until after they fight to choose? You don’t choose favorites over who’s winning. That’s a fair weather fan and fair weather fans are garbage.

is remotely interesting just to see Shields lose. Does Shields deserve it? Hell no. Does anyone really enjoy watching Shields fight save the die hard technical grapplers? He puts people to sleep. Shields Vs Fitch on the Winter Insomnia card. They better put them on the same card as GSP or another huge draw or no one will buy it. But again, who really cares about Shields, dude just is shite to watch.

I had Kampmann winning that fight...

…until he made that final choke attempt with about 2 minutes left in the 3rd. Too muck risk. By not sinking in the choke he left himself in bottom position and Jake maintained control for the rest of the round and eventual took his back which is huge in the eyes of the judges. Costly, costly mistake, Hitman. IMO you CANNOT give Shields the title shot after that performance.

It should be used

It was by one judge for an Anderson-Leites round and it should be used when a round is even regardless of the worries of their being more draws. 10-9 is too easy a score to use and it doesn’t always apply to a round, they need to change the way that rounds are scored so that dominant and even rounds don’t receive the same score.

I say one more fight

He did great, but I think he needs one more 170 fight to convince me he’s ready for a title shot. I like Shields, and I’m glad he won; I was rooting for him. I just don’t think a split decision win is compelling enough to put him the next in line. I say give Shields the winner of Penn vs. Hughes.

The definition of lay and pray

This was a horrible fight, but you cant blame Shields for being strategic and playing it safe.
Its a shame. That could’ve been a great fight if Shields felt he had to go for subs to get the W, but as of todays judging, posistioning is enough even though kampmann did more damage. He didnt go for a single sub for fear o losing position.

Boring wrestling matches cant be avoided no matter what the rules say, but I dont think the sport should allow game plans like that ( positioning only ) to work.
It was pretty clear that if that fight had been more than 15 minutes, kampmann without a doubt wouldve beaten him seeing how gassed shields was. Quoting Shields teammate Melendez, “you cant wrestle a guy to death”

I'd like to see Jake fight Fitch before title shot

While it wasn’t a great performance, he controlled the fight for the most part and should have gotten the nod. Weight cut was apparently pretty bad…he even mentions it on the stool after the 1st round. Props for him for gutting it out against very good competition. He’s pretty amazing with his takedowns in that if he doesn’t get it initially, he’ll at least maintain a clinch so he can work for it later. He does that better than just about anybody. Disappointed though with Martin that he didn’t fight more to stay out of the clinches, stay on the outside to do damage. Don’t think he fought a smart fight.

by sudnvictory on Oct 25, 2010 9:36 AM EDT reply actions

Take-downs and wrestling are fine in MMA, however, once an opponent is on the ground...

ground n pound should follow or a quick submission…..not just lying on the opponent until the round ends. If you go into MMA, expect to throw some elbows, punches and kicks to the body. It is so frustrating to see a takedown and nothing is accomplished. It is a mix of combat skills, not just a one to buy time as in this fight.
