Bellator 33 results: Alvarez dominates Huerta, Askren claims welterweight title

Huerta_alvarez_medium

Philadelphia, PA -- Bellator Fighting Championships hailed from the City of Brotherly Love tonight with a star-studded and stacked card.

Philadelphia fans were treated to a night of world-class MMA with the Bellator 33 which took place at the Liacouras Center in downtown Philadelphia. The night featured a special non-title Super Fight between Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez and UFC veteran Roger "El Matador" Huerta.

Also on the card was a Bellator World Title Fight between reigning champ Lyman Good and Season 2 Welterweight Tournament Champ Ben Askren.

"What an incredible night of fights, my first thank you tonight is to the city of Philadelphia," said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "The crowd, the energy was great, I’m glad Philadelphia fans were treated to a world-class mixed martial arts display."

Star-divide

In the night’s main event Bellator Lightweight Champion and hometown hero Eddie Alvarez took on former UFC fighter Roger "El Matador" Huerta in a non-title Super Fight. With Philadelphia fight fans on their feet the two took the center of the cage looking to bang with chants of "Eddie, Eddie, Eddie," echoing throughout the arena.

"Definitely a success tonight, everything I could have dreamed of went exactly according to plan. Everything went perfectly I couldn’t be more happy," said Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez.

The champ found his range early with powerful shots that hurt Huerta in the first round. The high octane action continued throughout the round with Alvarez buckling Huerta against the cage with heavy shots; however, Huerta was able to recover and employ some effective counter punching that kept the crowd on their fight.

The two fighters traded kicks early in the second round with Alvarez becoming the aggressor yet again, taking the center of the cage and backing Huerta down. The champ consistently found openings for his upper cut and lead straight right that Huerta did not seem to have an answer for.

At the end of the 2nd round it appeared that Huerta had sustained an injury, this was confirmed when the referee waved off the third round, giving Alvarez a TKO victory, much to the delight of the fans in attendance.

Hailing from New York, the powerful undefeated Bellator World Welterweight Champion Lyman Good found himself with a largely hometown crowd behind him in his title fight against Bellator Season 2 Welterweight Champion Ben Askren.

Askren, a former Olympian who is widely regarded as one of the most talented wrestlers to transition to MMA, took the champ down within the first ten seconds of the fight. Good looked to methodically improve his position throughout the first round with brief stints on the feet only to be taken back to the ground by Askren.

Askren mounted Good easily in the second and third rounds, and the defending champion was unable to defend against Askren’s superior wrestling. The referee stood the two fighters up briefly in the fourth round, which saw exchanges from each fighter, but ended with Good on his back yet again.

Late in the fifth round Good found a home for a devastating upkick that caught Askren directly on the chin stunning him briefly and giving Good the opportunity to grab an arm and sink in a deep triangle/armbar; however, with the heart of a champion Askren regained his composure and ended the 25 minute fight in the full mount position.

The tremendous effort by Askren resulted in a passing of the torch in the Bellator Welterweight Division and crowned him the new undisputed Bellator World Welterweight Champion.

"I’m glad people got a chance to see my heart. I’m pretty happy with my performance. I told people I was ready to five and that’s what I did," said Askren. "I’ve only been punching things for about a year, so I have a lot of room for improvement."

Earlier in the evening Former Olympic Judoka Rick Hawn battled powerful striker LeVon Maynard. Both fighters were cautious early, feeling out each other’s power and range. However, after a failed trip attempt by Maynard, Hawn found his opponent in position for a perfectly executed Judo toss, which he executed beautifully, following it up with powerful hammer fists that put an end to the fight.

The referee stoppage occurred at 4:53 of the first round.

Also on the main card was Brazilian submission specialist Wilson Reis taking on dangerous WEC veteran Deividas Taurosevicius. In the back and forth fight, both fighters found comfort on their feet but it was Reis who proved to be the more aggressive fighter, ultimately awarding him a Split Decision victory [29-28, 29-28, 29-28].

Local Feature Fights:

  • Tim Carpenter def. Jamal Patterson via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
  • Kenny Foster def. Lester Caslow via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Luiz Azeredo def. Eduardo Guedes via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
  • Nick Cottone def. Tuan Pham via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Fran Evans def Lewis Cassner via submission (triangle choke) - Round 1, 3:20

Huerta showed heart again

But his sloppy brawl style wont work anymore.
Eddie alvarez continue to impress cant wait to see him take on Melendez.

Askren annoyed the shit outta me he did look to pass guard but i find his style ugly going for a double than the body clinch and than to the ground, i really hoped Lyman choked him out he should have grabbed a leg.

Hawn was awesome cant wait to see him make some moves in the WW tourney

Damn, Huerta doin some exorcist shit in that pic

I liked Roger in this fight.. He always shows up in every fight.. Eddie’s just bigger and better.. Hope Roger can string a few wins together..

Conan : You are known as a striker. Is that correct? Tell me what that means.
Chuck : Well I like to punch people, or kick them.

I don't know Daft

I’m a big Roger fan but I think its time to move on. He looked extremely sloppy and way out of his league last night. The fact that the very first leg kick damn near crippled him was embarrassing. After that its almost like Eddie didn’t throw any more because he wanted to keep the fight going as long as possible. Roger looked amateurish. I’m still a fan of his as a person, but as a fighter, he’s just not anywhere near being what i thought he was. Admittedly, I was fooled.

Askren bored the shit out of me.

Why is it embarrassing to be cripple but a damn good leg kick?

They were executed perfectly and did exactly what they were meant to do. Why is that embarrassing? I didn’t think he’d win but I was still rooting for him and will continue to do so. He has improved but has a long way to go. I don’t know why at this point he still doesn’t cut angles, why he doesn’t have better footwork and head movement…Roger seriously needs to change camps. There is no shame in losing to guys like Alvarez and Maynard but it is definitely time to retool and regroup.

Well one because it was the first one and it wasn't checked at all

not even though the form was great for that kick, it wasn’t as powerful as it could have been. Also Roger is constantly traveling ALL over training. He spent I don’t know how much time in Thailand going from gym to gym supposedly improving his muay thai. He obviously didn’t pick anything up. He came back to the states and for a month and a half tweeted about how he was working his boxing…that didn’t look evident either. He may be doing the right things but they’re not sticking. All he’s doing at this point is putting his health in danger and collecting a paycheck. He didn’t seem like the same Roger last night. He seemed totally inadequate and out of his comfort zone.

Yeah I'm not sure why all that isn't sticking

He spent almost 2 months in Thailand. He trained with Freddie Roach and the Joe Duarte at Arena MMA for this fight etc…something happens when that dude gets hit. It’s like everything goes out the window and he reverts brawling, loses every stitch of technique he may have picked up. Furthermore, I don’t know what game plan he ever has other than move straight forward and get hit. Dave Menne is supposed to be really smart and I know Alvarez is dangerous everywhere but DAMN! I would think he would feel confident enough in his sub defense to take it to the ground if the striking isn’t working. At least he would have been on top and with the scoring/stupidity of the judges he may have had a shot. It wouldn’t have been the best fight but you need to get it done which ever way you can. There never seems to be a real game plan and there is NEVER a plan b either. At this stage of the game I just can’t fathom what is up with that. I feel like he is trying to recapture something as opposed to moving forward.

I dont know if it was the early leg damage but Roger looked slower than Eddie on almost every exchange. Asken is the ultimate weat blanket. I dont know how you have a dominate position for that long and do nothing with it.

Ben Askren was very dominant

in the boring ass fighter category. The only good part about the whole fight was Good’s upkick and attempt at a triangle. Askren didn’t attempt anything! Askren looked like Rocky Dennis from Mask after the fight.

by Johnny Ballgame on Oct 22, 2010 8:20 AM EDT reply actions

I was praying for him to sink in that triangle further, but the idiot went for the arm

It would have been a crazy show of heart just like Anderson in the 5th against Sonnen. Why did he have to go for the arm? He had it! Maybe his legs were gasses so he couldn’t apply pressure? Maybe he was too sweaty at that point? FUCK!

Fuck Ben Askren!

How the hell....

Is strikeforce passing itself off as the second best organization in MMA when bellator is in the picture. They always put on good fights and, unlike SF, who can’t seem to get their shit together, they seem pretty well run.

LIke Askren said, he's "only been punching things for about a year"

So he’ll only get more proficient in finishing people with his fists in future fights. He’s got a nasty streak, so I’m sure he’s itching to dominate people with his fists and elbows like he dominates them with his wrestling.

Question..

Where does Askren train? He def needs to work on his GnP. He needs to be training at a top camp

by jtc5150 on Oct 22, 2010 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Wiki says:

Askren is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the lead wrestling coach at the American Top Team school in Columbia, Missouri. In December 2008, Ben went to Coconut Creek, FL to train at American Top Team main school where many top fighters train.

His team affiliation is listed as Lion’s den, which is Shamrock’s school where Guy Mezger is the lead coach at the Dallas facility.

I don't understand...

All the hate towards Askren. It’s not like he’s Fitch or Shields who have had years and years to train their striking and still hump guys to death. Askren also attempted an armbar from the bottom position, which he almost sunk in, and a kimura from the top side control, which Good reversed on Askren and had top position for a bit. I think if Askren really works on a few subs from the top and how to stop guys from rolling him when he goes for the sub, he’ll be a beast. I’m biased towards Askren I’ll admit, and I don’t know why, I usually hate pure wrestlers in MMA, but with someone who is so new to the sport and is able to win like he’s been doing, and beating guys like Good and Hornbuckle (who are really good MMA fighters) that says something about Ben. His stand up, however, is atrocious. Even when he was trying to set up a takedown, all he did was throw a single looping overhand right that was telegraphed for miles, and wasn’t thrown with any intention other than a screen for the takedown. Everyone knows he’s trying to take it to the ground, but, at least fake a jab. I don’t think Askren pumped a single jab the entire fight, the only punch he threw was that slow overhand right.

This

Shame on Fitch for not evolving. If you wanna wrestle go wrestle. MMA is for fighting.

Shogun's knee will explode for the final time when Rashad shoots for the takedown.

Yeah man...

You hit the nail on the head, that’s my problem. I don’t care if guys start off one dimensional, but if they can display effectiveness in all areas and force the other guy to play into their strengths, that’s what I really like. Fitch has been fighting for a long time, and the last time he’s finished a dude was over 3 years ago. I’ve learned to like effective wrestling in MMA, but it’s just a shame, especially in the UFC, to see people JUST lay on top of a guy to win a decision.
