The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 12: Episode 6 recap and discussion
The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 12, featuring welterweight coaches (and division rivals) Josh Koscheck and Georges St. Pierre, is back for Episode 6 and Koscheck opens the episode by "double teaming" Michael Johnson while he stretches out.
Spirits are up for Kos and Co. now that they finally bagged their first win. He turns to the team to get some input on the final matches. Assistant Coach Dave Camarillo is playing field general and shares the stress behind trying to match up the fighters to their advantage.
Back at the house, Johnson continues to get his buttons pushed, now that Team Koscheck is "acting immature" and "not like good sports" following Nam Phan's win on Episode 5. Coach K shows up at the pad to ruffle a few feathers -- especially Johnson's.
Time for the first fight announcement and Marc Stevens will fight Cody McKenzie, who flicks Koscheck in the face after the stare down.
Coach St. Pierre finally makes an appearance and he tells his team not to fall for the antics of Team Troll, who just want to get a rise out of them by acting like bozos.
McKenzie trains for Stevens, who they've dubbed "Little Koscheck," and admits to not being a wrestler or athletic guy, but likes to scrap and throw hands.
And of course he has that tricky guillotine.
He runs into Koscheck in between the changeover and McKenzie tells the camera with a straight face that if they ever fought he "would give him a beating."
Uh-huh.
Stevens gets busy in the gym and drops the tried-and-true "He's never fought anybody like me." He's also adamant about not getting submitted. While McKenzie sees him as a "paycheck," Stevens considers his fight just another day at the office.
Both fighters weigh in without incident.
Dana White drops by for another stellar analysis. He's calling Stevens the favorite and that takedowns will be few and far between because of the fear of the guillotine.
Unfortunately McKenzie tells the guys that Stevens is better than him and every area but "once we get in there it doesn't matter what we learned." Sounds like a good philosophy. So what the hell are these guys paying Greg Jackson all that money for?
Stevens promises to send Cody back to his Crown Royal and chew.
Elimination fight #5: Marc Stevens (12-5) vs. Cody McKenzie (10-0)
Round 1: Wow, it's 10:31. This must be a quick fight if they plan on getting another one in before the show's over. And what happens? Stevens dives in for the takedown on a high kick attempt, lands it, and gets caught in the one place he didn't want to be: The friggin' guillotine. Peace out.
Cody McKenzie defeats Marc Stevens via submission (rear naked choke).
Koscheck looks shell-shocked. Stevens mans up and congratulates McKenzie before promising to come back stronger if given another chance. Hard to knock a guy like that.
In the locker room, GSP warns the team not to pound the walls or act like A-holes just because they pulled off the huge upset. Better to act nice and go crazy inside the cage.
In the opposing locker room, it's eerily quiet, almost like Jonestown. Nothing but a bunch of still bodies slumped across the wall and on benches.
Fight pick, take two, and Coach St. Pierre (back in control) picks Jonathan Brookins to fight Sevak Magakian.
Brookins is outside getting his yoga on, stretching and becoming one with nature. Then he's shown kicking some butt in training and getting plenty of accolades from Coach GSP. Brookins refers to himself as "just a baby" in this sport.
Unfortunately they go head-to-head on the mat and "Rush" gets busted open. He tries to keep it hidden from Koscheck but nope, Kos sniffs it out and starts the name calling.
"The Crazy Armenian" gets his chance to shine and Coach K calls him the "Alpha Male" because Sevak growls a lot and scowls in training. He wants to win to honor his late father and the rest of his supportive family.
And he knows Judo, go figure.
Koscheck says being a fighter is not about training or athleticism, it's about heart. And to think these guys wasted all that time in the gym when all they needed was to murk the Tin Man and jack his goods.
Elimination fight #6: Jonathan Brookins (11-2) vs. Sevak Magakian (8-3)
Round 1: 10:55. Another quickie. Both guys a little tentative on the feet. Sevak rushes in and Brookins soufflés him like a rag doll. They scramble on the ground and Sevak jumps up. Brookins is all over him, takes his back and rides him like a monkey. It's only a matter of time before he locks in the rear naked choke and Sevak crumbles to the mat. Dana White approves.
Jonathan Brookins defeats Sevak Mgakian via submission (rear naked choke).
Brookins doesn't want to be feared, he wants to be respected. Uh, mission accomplished.
Stay tuned next week as we get the final preliminary fight between Dane Sayers and Sako Chivitchian, the coaches challenge has Koscheck and St. Pierre going yard and the wild card is announced!
See you in seven!

That's exactly what Camarillo was telling him but
wrsetlers always resort to what they do best when they get pressured. So it was brilliant fight IQ from Cody. GSP mentioned he was going to come out very strong and fast….it worked to a tee.

If Kos will later try and chalk up his douchey behavior on the show due to ‘editing’?
He will probably take his douche baggery to an all-time high and blame his team for the time he had to waste with them and question how was he supposed to coach a bunch of losers.
by Mayhem chimpanzee on Oct 21, 2010 2:35 AM EDT up reply actions
Kos can't use editing as an excuse for his douchery
It plain as day that this guy sucks at life. Giving Michael Johnson shit while he is getting worked on and calling his win lucky?! Then going to the house and giving the rest of the team shit. What a fag. Glad Cody got the win, I really like that guy and how he gives Koscheck some shit, and he’s better at it than Kos. His guillotines are amazing, I was really impressed with it and the one that got him on the show. Oh, and Koscheck saying that he is gonna hit George on the chin, Ok. GSP will own you, get use to defeat loser.
hahaha that first pick wasnt all that impressive
george just tricked him in to getting Stevens he only has some decent wrestling and ground and pound. Koscheck picked because he could tell that Stevens was also a douche like him and they would probably get along.
even when stevens got choked out in 20sec he still said he was one of the more skilled and well rounded fighters out there. thats a straight up clown that dude he was sucking kos balls and will continue to do so the rest of the time in the house hahaha he was flattered when johnson told him he was a mini-koscheck what a dumbass

Loved it when he said good luck with that
This season is good for GSP it is letting everyone see why he conducts himself the way he does. It makes him seem more human while still acting the same way.
That and he is making Kos look like an idiot from the start of even picking the fights.
That was one of the sickest Guillotines ever.
Having thousands of posts on a MMA site does not make you an expert, training martial arts, wrestling or boxing makes you an expert.
and the best part is
he says he keeps it al bottled up inside, you can see GSP wants to smash Kos he is just waiting to face him december, koscheck will get the beating of a lifetime i think.
the best part where you could really see what a sportmanship GSP had when Cody just pulled of that sick guillotine and they were all in the dressing room and he said, that there was no need to bang on the wall like Kos team did.

by Craigo8609 on Oct 20, 2010 11:07 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Why would you want Kos to win?
As far has his coaching goes, I feel the exact opposite. He isn’t able to motivate these guys because he doesn’t care about them. That’s what I’ve noticed. Half-hearted speeches that don’t really have any message. Sometimes, he isn’t even looking at them when speaking to them. On the other hand, GSP’s boys are learning life lessons AND winning. GSP won this thing the minute it started, just for being a good guy. The people who call him a robot and boring and fake have a warped opinion, and I suspect that a bunch of them are changing their opinions currently.
Agreed
And Kos talks about himself winning or losing the show, and not the fighters themselves. “I don’t want to lose this to a french guy” etc. It’s all about him.
"Why am I here? Why does my mind have wings? Why do blue midgets hit me with fish?!" - The Tick
I’m just a koscheck fan I can’t help it. I know I’ll catch a lot of shit for saying that. I know he’s an asshole and usually I hate those type of fighters. (bisping and James toney for example) I hate to compare MMA to WWE but each fighter is a character and has his own personality and sometimes I can’t help but cheer for the “bad guys”. I’m also not a GSP fan even though I respect his abilities and his attitude. And as far as Kos being a good teacher. I’m not saying he’s better than GSP obviously he’s not cause what is the score 5 to 1? But he’s really trying to motivate his guys and push them to work hard.
by Craigo8609 on Oct 21, 2010 11:04 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I'm not going to knock you for being a Kos fan (hopefully some1 else will ;)
I also agree that he is pushing them to work hard. However, it is not working with respect to wins.
Yea I agree. Just pushing them to work hard isn’t enough. But I give him cred for trying. He’s definitely better than rampage though. But I guess that’s not saying much

But, he really just likes to talk trash… he’s such a meathead he’s easy to deal with… I don’t think Ko’s is a malicious as he is jokingly dim/arrogant
He's not necessarily a bad guy
but he is immature and has very little to offer the boys in terms of helping them grow as people. He’ll have them in good shape and all, but not prepared to win
i was worried..
but then shocked by the 2 quick wins..i prefer gsp to win..kos is twat!! there is honour in fighting and too much ego makes for bad decisions.

McKenzie and Brookins rule!!!!!
Man I had McKenzie since day one to take it all, but Brookins I think trumped him! I have never in all my 11 seasons of TUF seen such a raw, natural instinct. The boy looked absolutely flawless in his transitions. It was the arts in mixed martial arts. As modest as he is, and as ‘green’ as he claims to be, this guy will not be going away. I don’t want to over hype him too badly, but give this kid a year, and with the movement and control he has, we’ll be talking more, and more about Brookins.

I have to say this is the best season of TUF..
It has to have one of the most interesting dynamics I’ve ever seen, with the talent pool to back it up. In the lead up to the Savak/Brookins fight I actually felt as if I were watching a Martial Arts flick from the 80’s.. Brookins really has the right attitude to go a long way in the sport, hopefully he can keep progressing in the manner that he is now.
