Former WWE star 'Batista' says he's close to signing a contract with Strikeforce

Batista_medium

But how "close" are fans to accepting him as a legitimate mixed martial artist?

"We're real close. We actually agreed on a number last week and we're sorting stuff out. We should have a deal real soon. Hopefully I'll be fighting in March."

Dave Bautista, better known to WWE fans simply as "Batista," told DC 101 radio (via MMA Fighting) that he's closer than he's ever been to making his Strikeforce debut. For years, "The Animal" has dominated the wrestling entertainment business, gaining millions of fans and winning multiple world titles under Vince McMahon's empire. Now Bautista is looking to make a name for himself in the world of mixed martial arts. If Strikeforce is able to finalize the deal, Bautista would make his MMA debut at the age of 41. There are many questions surrounding the former WWE superstar such as his age and his history of injuries coming into the sport. Do you think "Batista" can make an impact in mixed martial arts? Or will he be nothing more than a freak show?

What are you getting at with the Herschel walker post?

He sucks too. The first time they put him in with anyone decent he’s quitting the sport. Neither of them have any sort of future in this sport at their age and are wasting precious TV time with their exhibition matches.

For shame, Coker, for shame.

I coulda interviewed Walker last week

I chose the LESSER of two evils and interviewed Bautista instead. In my honest opinion, he’s less of a joke, and I woulda been brutal with Walker and his multiple personalities, I didn’t want to lose my credentials and if I interviewed Hershel Walker, that was guaranteed to happen.

Multiple personalities? I don't know anything about Herschel outside he did some tkd.

I think I would have picked Batista too. I would have just asked " can you list your credentials in mma/fighting, you are about to sign a contract with one of the top 4 mma orgs. What is your background in cage fighting?"

He would sweat himself stupid.

what does he mean about losing credentials

Walker is a tough interview. He’s a really hardcore my way or highway sort – but if you are respectful and stand tall he is as well. He just has no threshold for BS or things he doesn’t get.

Mulitple personalities? never heard of that. He’s just got no buffer.

But from a Google search / hits perspective – Always go with Football in America

Herschel has a legitimate background as a high-level black belt in TKD. He fought a guy who was at the same MMA experience level as he was. He has no plans on challenging for a title. He just likes to compete.

Batista is a bouncer-turned-rassler with no training in any aspect of MMA. He sees Brock doing it and assumes he can do it to.

read some stuff guys, I know ur in canada and don’t follow football, walker played russian roulette, has multiple personalities etc. If I start my line of questions, I’m no longer covering SF last weekend (what I meant about credentials) hence I took the easier way out with Bautista

Shit Kev...

U passed up an opportunity to brutalize Walker?… more than his multiple personalities please question ’why he doesnt fight a credible opponent next… Greg Nagy was a complete scrub.

I don’t mind the Kimbos, Walkers, Batistas or pudzianowski’s.. if they’re going to sign with StrikeForce based on there name, they shouldnt be babied more than 1 fight… they gave Herschal a total scrub, now that StrikeForce can access his skill level, this time give him someone that can give as good as they get… make it more of a fair fight.

F'ing ridiculis freakshow sh*t

SO that means ANY person that has a “name”…ie(movie star, 50 yr old football player, anyone) can train for a few months and be a professional mma fighter headlning a show?

This is so sad. Why not get Hulk Hogan in the gym for a couple months and bring him to Strikeforce. Pretty soon they will be known as FREAKFORCE.

At least Bellator has ACTUAL athletes competing for a job. For Strikeforce, all u need is popularity…and they’ll find u a gym, u can train for a coupe months…..and presto, you are a Strikeforce mma star.

I am so disgusted by these kind of antics. If they want to be considered a professional mma organization, they need to stop being so despersate. Strikeforce is becoming mroe like WWE wrestling everyday. Who’s the next big signing? Ayn guesses I say Jose Canseco…or someone similar(another athlete that CAN no longer compete in THEIR OWN sport PROFESSIONALLY)

It's all about money

It’s about sellin’ PPV’s and if Batista sells more PPV’s than Fedor, than Batista’s the man. That’s how it goes. The problem with banking on Batista is that he may be able to make SF money on his first fight based on his name, but what happens when ppl realize he can’t fight worth shit?? nobody’s gonna buy the card and SF is stuck payin him his lucrative contract.

Personally, I dont give a shit about this guy. Wouldn’t pay a red cent to see him fight. I’d catch it online for free.

Coker can NOT call this a professional mma organization if he goes the "I’ll sign ANY person that has name recogniton(regardless of age or trainnig) as long as they workout in mma gym for a coulpe months.

Shameful

by fightfan on Oct 19, 2010 6:11 AM EDT up reply actions

The UFC milked Kimbo for all he was worth,

and remember all the shit Dana said about him before he was putting money in the UFC bank account. That is even more shameful to me. Its more about entertainment than sport, and most importantly about making money. There are quite a few that would pay money to see what he is capable of ,maybe not true MMA fans, which consist of fans who do or do not like wrestling, prefer or do not prefer stand up wars to fighting on the ground, prefer one dimensional strikers over guys who are multi skilled and those who do not consider a fight to be any good unless it ends with somebody getting finished. I give any guy credit for stepping in there knowing full well that he could end up getting embarrassed and ending up with a serious beatdown. I hope he does well, but I do not think he will. Those who do not like it do not have to watch, but the majority that say freakshow always end up watching anyway.

by detroit_fan on Oct 18, 2010 5:49 PM EDT reply actions

I have substantial interest in seeing this guy fight

and here’s why. Bautista is the next in line of former WWE stars to make the move to MMA – Brock, Lashley, now Bautista. So far there’s been a mixed bag of success in the cage, but I don’t think there’s any doubt about the attention MMA has received from these guys getting involved. There are TONS of WWE fans out there, who may or may not be interested in MMA yet. I think bringing guys like Bautista in improves that situation, which is why I support it. As an MMA fan, I’m up for anything that grows the fan base and the sport’s popularity.

Will Bautista be good? I can’t say. But what I can say is that people will be watching him, at least out of curiosity, and I’ll be one of them.

by QuickJack on Oct 18, 2010 5:55 PM EDT reply actions

It does irk me when people equate Lashley and Bautista to Brock

Lesnar has torn down the attachment to the WWF IMO.

He’s the Champ. The UFC champ. So whether he’s a wrassler or a bench warmer for the vikings the guy has showed us that he is a fierce fucking human being.

Lashley and Dave, here, well they gots a long row to how as yet.

But Brocks Vanilla Gorilla Paul Heyman days did grow the UFC fan base – so you have pointed out something there. But the comparison of Brock and anyone else is no longer holding water.
Frank Mir I – it did… no longer the case.

This signing is for marketing and depth.

Getting Bautista is just to shore up the HW ranks in my opinion. I mean how many HW’s do you see in the shape of the likes of Brock, Lashley, Bautista, JDS? And by shape I mean cut and ripped, not a little flabby but strong like Cain, Carwin, Big Roy <—Ha!. Now Pudz was just too much muscle and gassed big time on Sylvia but you get the right combo of strength and speed and you might have a winner. 41 isn’t too old, Randy C anyone? But does he have the cardio that Randy does? We shall see.

Bruce Leroy? Hopefully someone will knock him the @%$# out and say "Shogun is the master!" Shonuff!

I get what zino n w2cents r saying

StrikeForce is looking to boost it’s fan base with the likes of Lashley, Bautista n Herschal… those names r strickly for promotions sake….. Brock has the right background so does Lashley but Lashely was a bust’’….. StirkeForce could find someone and they’re starting with old guys with an established names. I don’t mind this market of fighters, but make it competitive, I wanna see what they’ve got.
