UFC Quick Quote: Jake Shields feels he was always in line for a title shot

Shields-dana-2_medium

"I love it. That's what I want, that title shot, so I love hearing stuff like that. For awhile, I've been feeling the hints that way from UFC. This is the first time I've heard them say it, but I've kind of felt that way regardless. I feel like as long I go out there and perform and look good doing it, I'll get a title shot. I remember before the Jon Fitch and (Thiago) Alves fight, he said something about them getting a fight, and everyone told me I wasn't getting a title shot, but for some reason I wasn't worried. I've always felt like I was going to be next in line for a title shot, for whatever reason."

-- Jake Shields tells USA Today that he wasn't surprised when UFC President Dana White revealed this week that the former Elite XC and Strikeforce champion would likely earn a title shot with a win in his Octagon debut against Martin Kampmann next weekend in California. White raised more than a few eyebrows with the announcement, especially those of Jon Fitch, who was promised a similar opportunity before his win over Thiago Alves a few months ago. Fitch feels that with his track record and long-term success with the promotion, that Shields should have to go through him to earn the right to challenge for a belt so soon into his tenure. Is a number one contender match between Fitch and Shields the way to go or is it all a moot point when the "Hitman" rains on Shields' parade at UFC 121?

Anyone else...

…think Kampmann is actually going to win this fight? I think his grappling is good enough to defend Jake’s sub attempts, while his striking is far superior.

I think we might say Jake get exposed a bit in this fight. Be interesting to see though.

Jake will get seriously exposed (I think we're past the word exposed for Shield's standup, lol) in the standup game, but I don't think it will be against Kampmann.

Martin is going to have a very hard time stopping Jake’s takedowns. Someone with better wrestling will have to be the one to take Jake’s head off.

isnt this the same shit dana did to hendo? said he would get the title shot if he beat bisping then changed his mind

now he’s doing the same shit to fitch….

the brockness monster grinds up teenagers and puts them in his protein shakes..and uses razor blades to chop toddlers up into lines to snort like meth...the reason no one can find bigfoot is because the brockness monster found him years ago and now has him in numerous ziplock bags in the back of his freezer...

by HellaHectic on Oct 14, 2010 10:51 PM EDT reply actions

they only do that shit to help sell a ppv by saying "this is a number 1 contender's match"

by calling the hendo/bisping fight a number 1 contender’s fight it allowed them to sell ufc 100 by saying “we have 2 title fights AND a number 1 contender fight on the SAME card!!”

and once they got everyone’s dollars dana changed his mind…ok nevermind, i got the dollars so fuck hendo….

same shit with alves/fitch..

it allowed them to give the illusion of a fight with title implications by saying “not only do we have the silva sonnen title fight but we ALSO have a number 1 contender’s match TOO!!”

but after the ppv dollars were counted dana said…i got them dollas so who gives a fuck…fuck fitch….

i wonder if JDS is next since they already sold the JDS/big country fight….maybe they’ll bring someone else in to cut in front of JDS…

or maybe they’ll make rashad the next casualty….since they already sold rampage/rashad as the number 1 contender match…

Hella, you really think Hendo/Bisping being a #1 contender match was the deciding factor in anyone's mind on whether or not to purchase UFC 100?

Plus, they were the coaches from TUF as well. A fight being a #1 contender match doesn’t improve sales when you already have 2 championship fights, that included arguably the two biggest stars in the UFC.

i think if fitch would of finished alves instead of dry humping for 5 rounds then he would of got the shot

I don't agree.

Fitch will have to do something really impressive to get another shot at GSP. Their fight wasn’t close at all. There’s no reason for a rematch.

The difference here Hell

Is Fitch will not fight KOS if by some miracle KOS wins, so why give Fitch a shot when he is not willing to fight one ofthe guys fighting for the belt now?

true, at least Dana should make winner of Shields-Kampmann fight Fitch for no.1 contender spot. Leaving Fitch out of the picture entirely is just non-sense.

Kampmann has seriously underrated grappling skill

And his striking is far superior to Shield’s. He did spoil the big debut of Condit already too

you cant compare condit and shields …. jake is on a 14 fight win streak over guys like miloer, lawler, condit, henderson, daley

This actually upsets me

dont get me wrong, i’d LOVE to see gsp fight sheilds. but once again i see dana using favoritism towards sheilds. didnt he promise the winner of fitch/alves would get the next shot? yea fitch lost to gsp a while back ago, but he worked his ass off, fighting other top ufc guys to get back into the title picture.it took him 8 wins to get a title shot before…which is rediculous to start with, now he has 5 strait more wins, and is being pushed back again, so someone with one UFC fight can get the shot first??? thats a slap in fitch’s face

So, when was it...

…you gullible boys and girls actually starting believing that deserving fighters would get title shots? The UFC has shown time and time again that they’re more interested in putting together fights people want to see, not fights based on ladder position.

Not saying it’s right or wrong. Simply saying that the UFC believes this method of promotion to be the most viable in terms of profit.

Nice VM! That should be the term from here on out

no. when did anyone ever hear dana say "I promise, the winner of this fight gets GSP"? never.

he said that whoever wins this fight is “right back up there” and "in the mix of things’ and he said multiple times “we will have to see what happens, shields and kampmann are gonna fight”. hendo-bisping is a different story. Im pretty sure he actually said ‘winner gets sliva’ but then they signed vitor and vitor is more marketable than hendo. plus friggin everyone on this site wanted vitor-sivla more than hendo-silva anyway.

BS

I sooooooooooo hope kampmann wins this fight, not because I’m a kampmann fan, but I so pissed that Fitch gets screwed out of the title shot over shields. This is some BS, if anything Shields should either have to fight alves or fitch. I think Dana is just pissed that Fitch and Koscheck won’t fight each other if it comes down to it. Dana is going to drive some more people out of the welterweight division and from what I see Strikeforce is putting out some decent paychecks to Thompson, Diaz, and Calvacante.

by charlyw on Oct 14, 2010 11:00 PM EDT reply actions

It wont matter

Fitch gets the title shot after shields loses to kampmann. Hopefully he can fight the winner of Silva Belfort and get Ko’d like we all wanna see

by bawlocc on Oct 14, 2010 11:05 PM EDT reply actions

I can see Kampmann winning this fight and spoiling all the fun for Dana and the boys. The hype behind Jake Shields and GSP would be huge!! Probally a primetime episode of the best 2 mma wrestlers ever. But instead they’ll have to hype up the durable Fitch who’s never quit attitude has deserved a second shot.

Poor Fitchy boy getting his ass kicked again.. right after his best buddy lost…

by Gordie_123 on Oct 15, 2010 12:12 AM EDT reply actions

Don't feel sorry for Fitch.

Dana can always say… if Ko’s won Fitch n Kos wont fight eachother… Dana has a ‘big’ problem with that and we know he’s always willing to make an example out of Fitch… remember the likeness contract issue? … Dana is more willing to go with Ko’s because he was a TUF cast member from the 1st show, brings fights n ratings and it’s likely he has the best chance at beating GSP.

All Fitch has to do is keep on winning and he’ll get another title shot. Things are not handed to this guy on a silver platter that’s for sure… but he’s already lost to GSP… If Ko’s wins by a freakish chance let Fitch fight GSP for a non title fight.

I have no problem with Shields getting a title shot before Fitch or Alves… GSP needs new blood, let Fitch get better in his standup (he’s slowly improving) and fight more strikers before feeding him to GSP again.

On the other hand its a bummer for Kampman that he doesnt have an offer to fight for the title if he beats Shields..

by THORAZINE on Oct 15, 2010 12:40 AM EDT reply actions

i dont even thinkn jake should even have to fight hitman .,…i say dude earned a shot allready … and if i was dana i wouldnt even be gambling with it … cause if jake loses then that investment is done.

by Nightmare83 on Oct 15, 2010 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Winner should be fighting Fitch for the next shot

That would be the fair and sensible thing to do but as usual the UFC are looking for the most marketable fights not the best ones.

And I’ll be very surprised if Jake doesn’t win, he’s the better grappler and Kampmann doesn’t have the power to KO him before being taken down.

Shields is no joke

Rant and rave all you want, but Jake Shields is the real deal. He should’ve gotten a title fight right away, might not have too much power in his hands, but he can take some shots, and I don’t think anyone can hang with him on the ground. Dude’s a beast. He might even hold 185lb U.F.C gold in his career
