Frankie Edgar vs Gray Maynard II official for UFC 125 on Jan. 1 in Las Vegas

Maynard_edgar_medium

One final hurdle remains for Frankie Edgar if he hopes to silence the last of the doubters.

The reigning UFC Lightweight Champion will get his long overdue rematch with Gray Maynard, as the two 155-pound standouts hook 'em up for a second time at UFC 125 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Jan. 1 in Las Vegas, Nevada, the promotion announced today.

And this time it's for the title.

"The Answer" shocked the world (again) when he defeated BJ Penn for a second time this year at UFC 118 in the promotion's Boston debut back in August. The Toms River native claimed "The Prodigy's" belt when they first met at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi last March.

Edgar holds but one loss on his stellar record, and it just so happens to be against his new challenger to the 155-pound throne, Gray Maynard.

Star-divide

"The Bully" earned his title shot on the same night Edgar dominated Penn in "Beantown," claiming a convincing unanimous decision win over Kenny Florian.

Maynard to this day remains undefeated at 10-0. With a unanimous decision victory over the current champ at UFC Fight Night 13 back in 2008, one has to imagine that confidence is something that Maynard won't be lacking come New Year's Day.

But will it be enough to overcome Edgar 2.0?

UFC 125, recently announced via the website's "Ultimate Insider," will feature a super-sized showdown between Shane Carwin and Roy Nelson as both heavyweights try to get back into the 265-pound title hunt.

Chris Leben vs. Brian Stann and Thiago Silva vs. Brandon Vera are also expected to be announced for the Jan. 1 pay-per-view in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more updates to this still-developing fight card.

I hope Frankie wins too

And it’s hard to rule him out after the way he’s punked BJ. I’ll be rooting for Frankie, but won’t be surprised if Gray gives him 25 minutes of man love.

This has the potential to be the worst title fight since either Timmay-AA III or Timmay-Monson.

Yes it does!

Edgar underestimated again.....

Not no more…..he proved to me that he can beat BJ….that means there isn’t a single fighter that he can’t beat. Frankie RNC…..He’s gonna be like GSP…he will adjust his game every new outing and for this he will finish Gaynerd.

I agree

Frankie has improved so much since the last fight with Maynard. He’s made the necessary adjustments to continue dominating the 155 division and can see him holding the belt for awhile. Frankie!!

If I have a job by then (God I fn hope so!) then I will buy it.

When I have income I buy them all (like BNF said “it is like a drug to me.”) My girl and I don’t go out much anymore, so $45 a month isn’t a big deal. It’s much cheaper than going out, esp on Long Island! But with moving back to NY and having back surgery last week, A job isn’t in my immediate future. And this recovery is much worse than the first time I had this surgery.

Thanks a lot guys!!! Genetics and an active lifestyle gave me my back problems.

Been dealing with it since I was 18 (I’m 34 now.) Last surgery I went through was a walk in the park. This time was pure hell. A piece of the herniated disc that I have broke off and pressed up against my spinal cord for over 3 days. I have never described a pain of 10 in my life but I did for 75 hours. They were giving me the strongest stuff they had and it did NOTHING!!! I’m hoping that medicaid covers this bc if not….lol…..imagine the bill? With the job, I should be OK. I just started to get unemployment, which more than pays my bills. As far as mortgage and those kind of bills my girl pays. She really is the greatest person I know and has done so much for me. I would be lost without her! It sucks as a man to have your girl pay the bills but what choice do I really have? I have an interview at this great place that told me to take all the time I need to recover. I should be able to get that job, but I have no idea how long I’ll be laid up. It takes time for the compressed nerves to return to normal. Still can’t feel my left leg below the knee. Dr said that should become normal in time. Again, thanks for the support guys, means a lot!

Anderson Silva is by far the number one P4P king!!! Even when he is losing a fight he still comes back and finishes for the win! GSP dominates the whole fight and still can't finish! LOL

I don't know man, if Kenny can drop Guida than Gomi will turn his brain off.

Also Guida has shitty takedowns, he might get Gomi down and he might be able to keep him there for a little while. But man if Clay starts trading and fighting like usual he gets laid the fuck out.

Yea BJ and Gomi's game just don't mesh....

i think BJ even half assleep beats him 1000/1000 times. But as far as Gomi – Guida….i don’t even know how anyone can say Guida will LNP gomi. Gomi was a very legit wrestler….guida won’t take him down. However he will get bombed on and hopefully one of those shots will send him right back to strikeforce.

Sonnen's done better in my opinion

Aside from losing to Maia he’s looked great in the UFC, beating top contenders like Nate and Okami and almost beat the P4P king Anderson Silva. That’s more impressive than squeaking wins over Ellenberger and MacDonald and losing to Kampmann. Agreed that WEC guys have struggled though, Cantwell, Stann, Larson, Munoz and Rosholt all failed to convince and even Condit hasn’t done that great.

Saying that Frankie would have pretty much cleared the

its likely dana doesnt want gray to win the belt

He is hard to market…he fights boring, has a boring personality and looks like everyday joe shmoe…I don’t think its guarenteed dana will set it up, but I’m sure it’ll cross his mind.

If he keeps winning his fan base will keep growing

I for one was a fan of Edgars before this fight as I’m to many wrestling based fighters. I personally don’t understand why there are so many haters of Maynard but I think after this fight he will have many new fans?

I can see why they hate maynard

He’s done some lay n praying and against Nate Diaz he just jammed him up against the fence, he’s kindof a plain guy. However, Maynard has good standup and wreck Florian GnP style last fight… so I’m ok with Maynard, I think fans will STFU after he gets some exciting wins as a Champ and fans get to know his personality better, he seems like a cool laid back guy.

News of the day.

"No one wants to be defeated" Michael Jackson on MMA fights
''A man is not finished when he's defeated; he's finished when he quits'' Richard M. Nixon on Fedor's loss
"The NOGs are DONE, A.SIlva is on his way OUT, and bagged milk is the WORST idea since frozen FISH STICKS" Paying a stupid pick on Lil Nog vs Ryan Bader. Congrats Californication.

Frankie, how bout you win this and never let maynard touch that belt. ever.

Mother of God.

this will be the first time the guy with the belt has been a dog in those three fights. 2 with penn and now maynard.

edgar gets no respect which makes me think he might win this.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez. The most hated and misunderstood person on the MMA blogs.. Utah and Boise take care of business in week one. Don't be surprised if they both go undefeated.

Aldo vs Grey

Grey would tie him in a knot! That’s a horrible fight for Aldo.
