Gabriel Gonzaga: 'One punch can change everything'
Props: MMA Die Hards
Quoteworthy:
"Brock Lesnar is at the top right now. He has the size and he's learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu really well. He has the strong wrestling and power, he's a really challenging guy but I believe we have a lot of guys in the division that have a good change against him. Cain Velasquez, Cheick Kongo, myself, a lot of fighters have the chance to be there too. [Brendan Schaub is] a big guy too and he has really good conditioning. This doesn't mean too much [inside the cage] because we're gonna trade punches and kicks (at UFC 121) and one punch can change everything."
Former UFC heavyweight number one contender Gabriel Gonzaga, whose ship has seemingly run aground after an electric start under the Zuffa banner, will try to get back into the title hunt when he collides with Brendan Schaub at UFC 121 on Oct. 23 in Anaheim. After a 4-0 start with the promotion, "Napao" was one fight away from holding the heavyweight strap, until Randy Couture finished him at UFC 74: "Respect" in late 2007. Since then, the Brazilian Yeti is an even 3-3 inside the Octagon, coming off a first round beatdown at the hands of Junior dos Santos at UFC on Versus 1 last March. It's make or break time against Schaub -- can he get it done?

Gabe is still championship contender and so is Kongo even though neither can get passed Mir, Carwin, JDS, Cain, Brock and hell, even Couture! Guys that aren't top 5 are still championship contenders right?

I agree that Gonzaga would beat Mir,
Kongo was cocky, kept his hands low and paid the price, I do not think Mir would beat Kongo again. I did not think Mir would beat Gonzaga before the Cro Cop fight, I do not see how many can doubt Gonzaga cannot beat him after that shite performance.
I'd like to see Gonzo and Kongo square off
I failed to learn my lesson, once again ignoring the advice of David W-S and making myself look foolish. Clearly he knows a lot more than me, he wins 2-1.

Might be entertaining for a minute or two till Kongo got taken down, then we could all laugh at his gg.
Gabe would actually have to go for a takedown for this to happen

Kongo will come in with his "awesome wrestling" that he's been working so hard on.
Shoot for the takedown against a BJJ blackbelt, that’s a great idea.

Yeah they got Rampage ready for his fight with Rashad so I would expect him to be able to shoot on Brock.
Seriously though are y’all giving Gabe a chance? I think Schaub is too quick and too technical for him.

GG’s only decent win was the head kick KO of Croo Cop, and given Cro Cop’s run in the UFC, that win is looking less and less impressive. Yet people still point to that one fight when listing Gonzaga as a contender.
Our lives change like the weather, but a legend never dies.
Good point!
Anderson Silva is by far the number one P4P king!!! Even when he is losing a fight he still comes back and finishes for the win! GSP dominates the whole fight and still can't finish! LOL
well cro cop was younger then
and gabe was kicking cro cops ass all fight.
idk i like gonzaga
i wanna see him take on mir, nog, almost anyone would be cool to see

i'm a big Gonzo fan...
He has the talent, he just needs to perform to his ability…. I am not sold on Schaub…

He's got talent but he's a massive choker. till he overcomes that he'll never be anything more than a gatekeeper.
A choker and a massive front runner too.....
when he’s in there with guys that don’t belong with him…..it’s almost always brutal and vicious. But if it’s a big fight or he faces a wall he just can’t smash though……it’s frank mir style checking out all day.

Agree with that
He’s what we call in England “A flat track bully”! That phrase derives from cricket, so I aint going into its origins too much.
nice analogy Graeme Hick springs to mind ;)

I love GG, one of my favorite fighters...
He has an amazing skill set, but seems to crumble mentaly whenever it matters. Randy broke him or something. In his defense losing to JDS, Werdum, and Carwin are not in the least bit shameful but it seems like he avoids his BJJ skill set in order to make for an exciting stand and bang show. I would love to see him take his fights to the mat and go for the submission game. He is easily the most skilled/decorate HW BJJ Black Belt in the UFC and should play to that.

He has a excellent ground game, but just wants to slug it out with everyone

Sorry there Gabe
I just don’t think he has the ability to be a top 5 heavyweight in the UFC division. He looked promising at first but always chokes in big fights. I’m sure if he was in Strikefarce he would be considered a threat against Fedor cause of his ground game

Ofter he looses to Schaub he could go fight Werdum
I’d totally watch that on free TV

Gonzaga should let Schaub come to him and then lay on some good stiff strikes to both the body and the head. Follow-up with some crisp lower leg kicks
Schaub likes to try and over-whelm his opponents initially, however, when he tastes some straight jabs he comes apart. Gonzaga has what is needed to win this match-up.
