Report: Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz trilogy to conclude at UFC 115 on June 12 in Vancouver

Chuck_tito_medium_medium

Following their duties as coaches on the upcoming eleventh season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), UFC pioneers and longtime rivals Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz may finally see the conclusion of their fight trilogy at UFC 115 on June 12 in Vancouver, according to a report from Vancouver's own News 1130.

"The Iceman" currently holds a 2-0 advantage over "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy," winning by way of KO at UFC 47 in April 2004 and then by TKO at UFC 66 in Dec. 2006.

Liddell (21-7) hasn't competed since a technical knockout loss to Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 97: "Redemption" from the Bell Center in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, back in April 2009. In fact, since his last stoppage over Ortiz, he's only had one victory in five attempts, a gritty unanimous decision win over Wanderlei Silva at UFC 79 in Dec. 2007.

Company president Dana White tried to convince his good friend and big time money-making machine to hang up the gloves, saying he had made a ton of cash and had nothing left to prove. Liddell — who will be 40 years old by the time the third Ortiz fight rolls around — was adamant that he's still got some fight left in him.

The icy one just wanted a little time to "give his brain a rest" -- and tear up the dance floor on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars."

Now it's back to business for the former light heavyweight champion -- who is undoubtedly planning for a hat trick against his fellow fading star.

Star-divide

Ortiz (15-7-1) has also struggled inside the Octagon, failing to notch a win since abusing a geriatric Ken Shamrock at UFC "The Final Chapter" in October 2006. He most recently coughed up a split decision loss to Forrest Griffin in the UFC 106 main event from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas this past November.

Following the fight -- his first since returning from major back surgery -- the former 205-pound kingpin complained of a "cracked skull" and other maladies, including an empty gas tank. While the medical layoff was behind some of his rust, it's been evident for some time that Ortiz is no longer the dominant force he was in the early 2000's.

But has he held up longer than Liddell?

It will be interesting to see how the coaching gig on TUF 11 -- a second go-round for both fighters -- will prepare them their third dance. The Spike TV reality show returns on March 31.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for future updates on this recently announced fight card, which came just days after MMA received final approval for sanctioning in Vancouver.

In the meantime, any guesses on who takes this final battle?

if he loses, he will probably cry this time.

I shutter to think what we hear if he actually wins. Knock him out for the last time Chuck.

Actually i think..

he’s gonna show up in the best shape of his life. His back is gonna be healed. His vertebrae was fused and now he has no pain at all in his back. You know Nuvasive really saved his life and now he can get back to playing with his kids. He’s been fighting at 60% for 10 years and now he can get back to his former self as a dominant champ who took Shammy and sinosic to the woodshed. Also his cracked skull should have healed up by fight time and the ring rust will be gone since he’ll be on TUF. He’s bringing in serious training partners too like justin McCully and his hands should have vastly improved due to his training with Roach. There is a reason why he told Anderson to stay at 185. Old tito is back.

by NNR (formerly NameNotRequired) on Jan 8, 2010 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

Thats pretty funny NNR

I have actually tried to think of a reason to want to watch this season of TUF. The past few have been disappointing, and with the whole Rampage/Rashad thing I think I am going to take a break from TUF this season. Also…doesn’t matter if Tito has a completely new back, skull, and boxing game – he is a garbage overrated fighter. Always has been, always will be.

Nuvasive

Same outfit that put Nate Quarry back together eh? thats interesting to me.

NNR – I read your post and half of me thinks I’m picking up some sarcasm

He’s bringing in serious training partners too like justin McCully

i went to both shows too...

i had floor seats and 100 level seating, but it was in the corner. the level seating is better, but not much. the best seats are on the 100 level on the sides, or front row. To be honest, the best seat is on your couch, you dont miss a thing. Notice how when Dana’s sitting ringside, he’s looking into the small 12" monitor?? If the live event is soo good, why is he looking at a TV when he has the best seat in the house?

I sat in the lower bowl both shows

The four hundred dollar seats the first year, and the $550 seats the next. Both awesome views.

I thought this site was just some place to come, talk shit, and have some fun with my alter ego…………lol!! But within days I was gang raped and admittingly so I deserved it. This site is actually full of decent posters and stand up guys as you can obviously see just from this thread alone. I mean these dudes are all meeting up for their love of MMA and the UFC and it’s an open invite, even to the likes of me, all the way over here in Ireland!! How fucking cool is that, and by the sounds of things, I’ll be missing out on one hell of a Road-Trip and the chance to have a few smokes and get to know these guys, how fucking cool is that, if i could make it happen I would!!

by delldog on Jan 8, 2010 1:24 PM EST up reply actions

yea, what's up with UFC marquee matchmaking recently?

lately it seems UFC has been relying heavily on their ‘past their primers’ for their main events. hughes/renzo? serra/trigg? this is never a good sign. honestly, strikeforce has probably had much more exciting signings in the past few months.

by wandwagon on Jan 8, 2010 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

totally agree

it pisses me off that they try to sell us these fights. Hughes-Gracie is a total joke! What’s Hughes going to prove here?? I dont care to see Trigg fight, just like Tito…that’s why I wanna see Serra choke out Trigg and Chuck ko Tito.

Coleman-Couture?? Have some respect for Couture and give him someone better! Coleman only gassed out in the 1st in back to back fights. Luckily for him one was against Bonnar.

by Two_Words on Jan 8, 2010 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

not main events

neither renzo-hughes nor serra-trigg are even co-main events.. and both shoudl be exciting fights!

by PHISH NATION on Jan 8, 2010 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

2 atrocious main events. Serra-Trigg and Hughes-Gracie are both just as irrelevant as well, though in the latter’s case at least the UAE fans will get a BJ Penn fight and my personal dream fight of all time (Andy-Vitor) to make up for it. UFC 109 is set to be the worst PPV since 78, hopefully Vancouver fans get a proper main event and a solid undercard to make up for this debacle and don’t end up with another 109 card.

"Anderson Silva is the best fighter on the planet...any Anderson Silva fight that is on, people should be buying that PPV, not because he’s my fighter but you know what, he to me is like the Muhammad Ali of MMA...the UFC has been around since 1993, nobody (else) has 10 consecutive wins in the UFC. Anderson has had 10 fights in the UFC, only 1 has ever gone to a decision."

UFC is pissing me off!

I paid 50 bucks for a PPV where half the fights(prelims) were already shown for free on Spike TV. And now they are trying to shove an irrelevant LHW main event matchup down Vancouver’s throat. Look at the two Montreal cards. Fricken’ Western Canada is always getting screwed.

by bubbafat on Jan 8, 2010 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

109 the worst?

really? You get to see Couture, Marquardt, Maia, and Swick… pretty sweet card to me!

by PHISH NATION on Jan 8, 2010 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

The fights are going to be terrible. Couture-Coleman is a bad match stylistically, they’re both too old and after Couture’s last performance the last guy I want him to face is one dimesional wrestler Coleman. Chael Sonnen is one of the most boring fighters that I’ve ever seen, hopefully Nate smashes him but that fight is nothing compared to what Nate-Hendo would have been. Swick-Thiago is a waste of time and just another silly AKA-Thiago fight. Maia-Miller is the only fight on that card that I care about.

"Anderson Silva is the best fighter on the planet...any Anderson Silva fight that is on, people should be buying that PPV, not because he’s my fighter but you know what, he to me is like the Muhammad Ali of MMA...the UFC has been around since 1993, nobody (else) has 10 consecutive wins in the UFC. so you're basically saying..

That nobody in mma who doesn’t have a hope of holding a title should fight period. That leaves about 6-8 fighters who would remain in the ufc. Even past their prime either of these guys could mop up 50% of the current 205 division.

by cosa7189 on Jan 8, 2010 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

If they could smash half of the UFC's LHW roster then they wouldn't have to be matched up with each other

Personally I find it sad to watch legends compete in sports when they’re well past their prime, as you can see how far their skills have declined and their reputations end up in tatters because they don’t know when to quit. If Chuck wins this then both should retire.

I doubt it'll even be a good fight

I like to see competetive fights between either the best in the world or people who want to be the best in the world. This fight is as relevant as another Tyson-Holyfield rematch, not only are these guys not ranked anymore but they’re also nowhere near as good fighters as they once were and it’s pretty sad that 2 legends don’t know when to quit and can now only be competetive against each other.

At the pre-fight conference against Forrest, he was retelling a story about a conversation with Forrest, and Forrest just said: “um, thats not how it went” and Tito just said: “yeah, close enough”, as if “hey, im tryin’ to make myself look tough so I can promote this fight, even though I suck and shouldnt be fighting”

Chances are it’ll be more entertaining watching the old fight back when they were quality fighters instead of watching 2 men who don’t know when to quit pissing away their legacies for the sake of money. If that’s the main event then the buyrate will be horrible. They’ll need a good undercard to make it worth going, the prelims and undercard saved 105 as the main event was horrible. I’m a Randy fan but it was not a great performance or fight. Chuck-Tito is even more irrelevant than Randy-Vera and Vancouver haven’t had a bunch of stars refuse to fight there, this is actually the UFC’s first choice.

thats the rumour

"Me and Michael are like Mozart...and Mozart's friend."

"No, I'm like Butch Cassidy..."

"You mess with Mozart, you're gonna get a bullet in your head. Courtesy of Butch Cassidy."

Have a good one.

Talk to you Saturday, OJR.

Frank Mir packed 30+ pounds of solid muscle onto his body in five months. Why hasn't anyone called him out for steroid use? Is it because he never wrestled for Vince McMahon? I give Mir credit for his taste in strippers/wives, not his fighting skills or his personality.

argh!!!! this is mean..

hmmph..that really blows..i have a huge hate-on for tito..and this is the closest the ufc are coming to me..and that blows my rashad/rampage fight cuz of the movie release theory..not that i care about their beef anymore..grrrrr

as soon as I saw the headline I knew you'd be pissed

hopefully they make it a co-main event for you sarah… it’s a weak lead in and because of the TUF relationship you know that the coaches will fight with some of their teams on the card which may or may not be great

"He wants to get in close and use that reach advantage" - Mike Goldberg
"Half of this game is 90% Mental" - Tim Sylvia
"I have two words for you... Destiny" - Diego Sanchez.

Anyone interested in a dumbest MMA quote of all time poll?

will depend on the tuf season

tragically..it is possible the fighters will be worth watching..seeing as last tuf sucked so hard..they could only get better..one hopes.but yeah..this is the bend over when it comes to the building of a fight card.

At least they will start holding events in BC.

You gotta be really happy about that, sarah. Plus, if you guys throw all your support behind this one, and Dana sees you guys are great fans, he will bring better fighters for the following events.

but, if you consider driving 8 hours close to you..

dunno if it’s worth it yet..i’ll see what the card looks like..i am not one to stand in line to meet someone either, never gave a f*ck about autographs from any human..but seeing the weigh ins live might be cool..we shall see..and yeah i am stoked that bc is having the ufc come here..but man..i am a lil disappointed.

4 hours of driving for me...

But it’d be my first live UFC event and seeing the weigh ins would be awesome as well.

It doesn't really matter about the card.

Chuck/Tito isn’t going to be the main event. They will have two good fights besides that one. You’ll get a good card, to show Toronto what’s up. June should be the right time for another round of the heavyweights, Mir and Carwin, and Nog and Cain, JDS, those guys should all be fighting around then. They haven’t announced anything, and Chuck won’t be the big fight of the night.

You might get to see someone win the paper HW championship.

I will be driving 6 and a half hours to Montreal. The drive is half the fun. ROAD TRIP

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Come on!!! Chuck and Tito? I was so stoked to see this event in Van-city, but seriously WTFFF?!?!?!?

by captainStevo on Jan 8, 2010 2:13 PM EST reply actions

hopefully 1 or both

will get injured so this fight doesn’t happen! I am for sure going to this event and there is NO WAY I wanna see a third fight when the first two weren’t even competitive and now both are over the hill. IF it does go down here, it better not be the main or even the co main event! I want two worthy fights here!
