Jon Fitch vs Thiago Alves rematch signed for UFC 111 on March 27

F-alves_medium

It's time.

UFC welterweight stalwart Jon Fitch (21-3) is now ready to finally rematch Thiago Alves (16-6) at UFC 111 from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on March 27, setting up a fantastic 170-pound showdown that will prove once and for all how far both former number one contenders have come since their initial encounter back in 2006.

MMAmania.com (www.mmamania.com) confirmed earlier today that bout agreements have been signed, sealed and delivered.

Their rematch was originally pegged for UFC 107 in Memphis, Tennessee; however, "The Pitbull" had to withdraw due to a knee injury. Fitch remained on the card and defeated Mike Pierce via unanimous decision.

Fitch scored a convincing second round technical knockout of the Brazilian at UFC Fight Night 5. He would go on to win his next five fights and earn a crack at division champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy" in Aug. 2008.

He was overwhelmed by the Canadian for 25 minutes, losing a lopsided unanimous decision.

Star-divide

Alves, too, went on a tear after the loss to Fitch with seven consecutive victories over top-ranked opponents such as Matt Hughes and Karo Parisyan, as well as outpointing Josh Koscheck on all three judges scorecards at UFC 90 in October of 2008.

However, St. Pierre would also end Alves’ run with another five-round clinic at UFC 100 back in July.

On the other hand, Fitch exacted revenge against submission specialist Paulo Thiago with a unanimous decision at UFC 100 and notched a similar result against Akihiro Gono earlier this year. He also outworked Mike Pierce (Alves' replacement at UFC 107) to earn the nod from all three judges sitting ringside.

So is Fitch still better than Alves more than three years later or has Alves matured to a point where his last loss is essentially meaningless because he is a totally different fighter?

Tune in on March 27 and find out once and for all. In the meantime, let's hear what you have to say below.

UFC 111 will feature a 170-pound title defense by promotion superstar Georges St. Pierre as "Rush" answers the call of British striker Dan "The Outlaw" Hardy. Heavyweights Frank Mir and Shane Carwin are also set to collide in an interim title match while Brock Lesnar recovers from recent surgery.

Hopefully

It would make the most sense considering the rivalry between Rough House and AKA, plus Semtex and Kos are the only other top WW contenders available now that Fitch and Alves are rematching.

Anderson has had 10 fights in the UFC, only 1 has ever gone to a decision."

I hope Alves knocks Fitch’s sorry ass back to the undercard where he belongs.

Sure....# 2 WW on the undercard

That was only because Danass was making an example out of Fitch…..nothing else.

Ohh yeahh

that had something to do with him not wanting to sign something for a game contract
right?

It was to do with the game contract

but Fitch said that it was the way Dana was talking to him that pissed him off , he did not have an issue with signing it, just Danas arrogant attitude when it came to signing the contract.

Frank Mir packed 30+ pounds of solid muscle onto his body in five months. Why hasn't anyone called him out for steroid use? Is it because he never wrestled for Vince McMahon? I give Mir credit for his taste in strippers/wives, not his fighting skills or his personality.

Jon Fitch vs Thiago Alves while Dan Hardy gets a shot at the title… lol. i know Fitch and Alves both just had their shot, but…
as for who will win, i expect to see Fitch dominate through wrestling

I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08

Good fight for Alves to grow, we all know Fitch is going for the takedown so he’ll be training TD defense for this then work toward GSP. Even though GSP is in a different league

ohh nice

i can c the pitbull ko’ing fitches ass. i think it will b like the kos fight.

by ruanfiy on Jan 6, 2010 1:51 PM EST reply actions

Great card. Looking forward to it. Will probably have to host a party for this.

by Reciprocity on Jan 6, 2010 1:57 PM EST reply actions

Alves is a much better fighter now, he’s in a different league to the guy that got triangle choked by Spencer Fisher and KO’d by Fitch. He’s a much more deadly and accurate striker and has much better TD defence. Fitch is an awesome wrestler but he’s no GSP and he’ll struggle to get Alves to the ground, whilst his BJJ these days is just for defence on the ground and his striking is poor, he got rocked by Jason Pierce so he’ll have to work much more on his striking if he’s not going to get KO’d by Alves.

Dude do you know who Camarillo is?

No way that Fitch only got jits for defence. He will beat Alves again IMO.

by Alpha Male on Jan 6, 2010 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

Fitch win again

I totally disagree DWS. Alves was pathetic in the first Fitch fight and I really do not think that he has improved much wrestling wise. Fitch is one tough bastard and he can sustain a lot of damage so I say Fitch via UD.

by hairybumcrack on Jan 6, 2010 7:16 PM EST up reply actions

PLUS

In their first fight I remember a little disagreement that joe rogan had where another announcer was saying how Fitch is really big for the division he is in and that alves could probably fight in a lower weight division…. But ….. Now Alves aside from having improved he has actually gotten a LOT bigger since then….

Also if Kos couldnt take Alves down then I KNOW that Fitch will have a Much harder time taking him down…

ANYBODY AGREE?

Alves might be a better fighter but Fitch is too. A lot of people like to hate on Fitch because he has not finished a fight in a while. He has one of the best records in the UFC he is tough and puts in the hard work and even after a ton of punishment find a way to win. He has a good chance against Alves and everyone knows it, however I am not saying Alves will be easy, he is good I just like Fitch more and I hope he wins this one.

Not much has changed...

Fitch is still a tough as nails wrestler, and Alves is still a Muay Thai machine. Taking Fitch by suprise, suprise… UD.

so Daley gets Koscheck? this is a amazing card for sure. really tough fight for Daley he more then likely won’t win imo. you need to get the video of James Toney and Dana talking around a table Toney “front kick back kick side check kick ive seen it all” something like that lol

kos aint the cleverest of geezers though...

if he comes in like the lyttle fight he will repeatedly take daley down for a gnp stoppage or an easy decision.but now kos thinks hes bruce lee and will want to stand hence goodnight kos!!!

by scott1 on Jan 6, 2010 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

If Kos tries to outwrestle Semtex then he’ll win a decision or even get a submission, if he tries to kickbox then he’ll get counterpunch KO’d in the first. Kos is very hit and miss, you never know how he’s going to perform, he looked superb against Rumble but got sloppy against Paulo. Semtex is on the roll of his life and if he keeps improving his world class muai thai and continues to work on his sprawl and getting off his back then he’s got a great shot at KO’g Kos.

KOS

seems to me like the type that can pick up on different styles pretty quickly.. The only problem is that he does not specialize in anything and at this level you can’t just expect to improvise your way to the title imo you have to have a game plan..

Kos is pretty much a good:
puncher
kicker
Bjj
Kos is great at:
Wrestling

In a perfect world...

We’d get Alves vs. Daley and Koscheck vs. Fitch. Still…can’t really complain about two top 5 WWs going at it.

I can’t wait to see this fight. I was SOOOO disappointed when it was cancelled the first time. I wanna see this fight. It will show how much each fighter has come along. If I remember correctly Alves was doing quite well until he got caught with a BIG upkick.

Anyway, I’m definately getting this PPV.

PLEEEASE Alves KTFO Fitch!!

Fitch is one of the most boooring fighters on the planet. Yes he’s skilled blah blah but seriously, watching his fights are almost painful. You just KNOW it’s going to be a 3 round points win by boredom.
