Avast, ye pirates! Dana White is comin' for thee!

Quoteworthy:

"When people start going to jail, people will stop doing it. It’s going to be a battle, man. It’s going to be a battle, but I’m ready to (expletive) fight. We’re gonna go after them, we’re gonna go after them hard, and we’re gonna hurt ‘em. (Piracy) hasn’t cost us anything compared to what it’s going to cost us to go after these guys. It’s gonna cost us a lot of money, but guess what—it’s gonna cost them a lot of money. It’s gonna get to the point where it’s like, you know what, (expletive) it, maybe we shouldn’t pirate MMA any more. These websites … you got these websites like Justin.tv, and they pirate all kinds of things. They play all kinds of (expletive) on there. Well, we’re gonna make it where it’s not worth it to put UFC events up on the website."

UFC President Dana White is prepared to crack down on illegal streams of UFC pay-per-views and other related content by turning the legal dogs loose on the "Pirates" who cut into the Zuffa profits with grainy footage and choppy frame rates. While it's impossible to enforce a worldwide lockdown on illegal streams, I do feel sorry for the handful of pirates who do get nabbed -- they're sure to be made an example of. UFC legal department off the port bow!

I was wondering what Rogan would say considering his recent comments about the new mid-show Zuffa legal notice.

Well, according to MMAJinkie, here’s what he had to say on the topic.

“UFC commentator Joe Rogan understands the promotion’s plight but thinks an Internet crackdown is an unnecessary step.
“I think that kind of stifles innovation,” Rogan said. "It stifles the direction the Internet is going. I like things being out there. I think people are always going to buy UFC pay-per-views. You’re going to get a much better experience watching it on your television than all stretched out looking fuzzy and pixilated.
“They’re trying to protect their money, but the Internet is a strange animal.”"

Gotta love that Joe Rogan. Wonder if he’ll get in trouble for speaking out like Natasha and Logan. ;)

Dana White Infected My Computer!

I knew it! See my sig below. I chipped in on a PPV but it wasn’t at my house. Wanted to watch a couple of the fights again at my place with a cold beer in hand. I finally got all the crap off of my computer, I think. Keep it in your pants, Dana.

Do not. I repeat, do not, go to mma-core.com. I made the mistake of watching a couple UFC 108 bouts on there and I am still trying to get all the viruses of my computer. Ridiculous! You've been warned.

by fenderacoustic (formerly wAyNe) on Jan 5, 2010 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

Is Dana not making enough money?

I don’t think all of the people watching on the internet are going to start buying PPV’s if these sites are stopped. There’s just going to be a lot of people missing the fights. That isn’t going to help your bottom line either.

Frank Mir packed 30+ pounds of solid muscle onto his body in five months. Why hasn't anyone called him out for steroid use? Is it because he never wrestled for Vince McMahon? I give Mir credit for his taste in strippers/wives, not his fighting skills or his personality.

go to a freaking bar then!

I haven’t bought a ppv since ufc 92 last year but I still catch every one by going out to a local bar that carries it a friend’s house. for me, it costs maybe $5-10 per event because I’m not a huge drinker.

by Dion03 on Jan 5, 2010 11:07 PM EST up reply actions

Is he going after sites like that?

That would suck then because lots of times I work nights and you know who wins, so you don’t really want to pay $50 for a replay or pay to watch each fight when you already know the end. So I also will catch up on mmacore/linker. I hope he allows these and if not he should work out a deal with a few credible sites like linker/core to allow individual replays! At that point it is file sharing and no profit is being made so maybe they will allow it!

He had an harsh response from the UG yesterday....final verdict... everyone was laughing of him. They will never be able to do something enough convincing to stop the streaming.

What make me laugh is that he have absolutely no idea that a lots of guys got hot satllite receivers that get all his PPV for free since the last 10 years.

exactly jay.

fact is all streams and torrents have been helping his business, I used to download MMA all the time a couple years ago, there were no other options for me to watch the fights.
I stream NHL hockey and NBA almost everyday and if these streams one day went down i would never get to watch the sports.

sometimes the beauty is in the attempt.

by RoBerto. on Jan 5, 2010 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

Yep.

A lot of sports are offered legally over the internet. The difference is that they have network deals…This isn’t going to help things, it’s only hurting their cause. Moreover if they shut down one stream there’ll be another ready to go up next PPV and so on. All that will happen is that people will get craftier about how they do it.

Maybe If Dana would stop swearing at the wrong people and trying to bully them, the UFC could get a network deal. Then just do a little business plan re-tooling and let the advertisers/networks pick up the majority of tab.

Or they could just do their own legal HD quality on-demand stream a few days later laced with advertising between fights/rounds. Break the card up into segments with commercials in between, like CBS and NBC does when you watch their shows online. Spike does it too.. they do it with deadliest warrior for sure. They’d probably make more revenue than they do off that pay-per-fight “on demand”(meaning we demand more of your money) BS.There are a lot of smarter ways to combat illegal streams without taking legal action against people. But the UFC just loves to push everyone around.

by Fleet on Jan 6, 2010 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

OH Also...

If less people see UFC fights (legally or illegalyl) and subsequently less people talk about UFC cards and how cool the UFC is; do you think that will hurt their merchandise sales, event ticket sales, and overall clout with advertisers?

Hmmm… so they’re spending a ton of money… to make a little more money… but they may subsequently cripple several other revenue streams in the process, losing them most likely a lot more money. Good call.

by Fleet on Jan 6, 2010 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

anyone know who jimmy pattison is?

he owns a huge chain of supermarkets in western canada and owns most of the properties including all the parking lots in vancouver. he’s so rich he shits $100 bills. but most of you would still say taking a loaf of bread from his stores would still be stealing. ufc is offering a service/product and is charging money for that service/product. if you dont pay for it then you are stealing. its simple really. there are people in the world that would say you all are rich enough and therefor others should be aloud to steal from you and not be penalized. that being said……i stream when i cant get my group together for a ppv or will watch it later online if im busy. thats right, im hypocritical, but i can admit it :)

by Egads on Jan 5, 2010 10:54 PM EST up reply actions

ARE YOU SERIOUS?

how much money are they really going to make after lawers and legal fees?
dana said ppv buys for ufc 108 were expected to be around the 500K mark at $55 a pop.
Thats 27.5 mil… with another million dolla gate and not even a million in fighter payout
DANA YOU CAN ONLY BE SO GREEDY

by sac165 on Jan 5, 2010 3:42 PM EST reply actions

You know he doesn’t get all that 27.5 million from PPV’s he only gets a fraction of it

I think the UFC is making money, but they certainly aren’t making what you seem to think they are.

It’s funny how many people pirate on here and then bitch about fighters pay.

I use Justin.tv for some WEC events (no versus in Canada) and Dream (no hdnet) but I buy most of the UFC’s, but yeah, I’ll watch the fights online after if I happen to miss a card.

Shogun lost a close decision! Everyone get crazy!

by ShaiZ on Jan 5, 2010 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

shaiz

I live in Canada and I have hdnet I pay for it. Also, the score gets WEC now so there ya go. Hockey and basketball aren’t PPV so don’t worry bout watching there. Dana should be mad about this. I don’t blame him.

And the fighters are underpaid. I have never watched an event online illegally and never will. So I can bitch I guess. I’m fortunate enough to get SF free now as well but I used to pay for them too.

by daniel worby on Jan 5, 2010 5:36 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Yep Daniel, you are free to bitch ;), I am not.

But I see 75% of mma legally, but I watch almost all mma, Sengoku, dream, WEC, SF, UFC, but I’m never at home, so I don’t want to pay for full HD cable with Shaw for the rare time I’ll be able to use it.

(also I’m often at the office when WEC’s are on, so I stream it at work on one of my screens ;)

UFC should really drop the price for their online streams, they aren’t nearly as good as watching it on the TV, if their live streams were around 10$ (or a reasonable nominal fee) I would gladly pay it.

Shogun lost a close decision! Everyone get crazy!

by ShaiZ on Jan 5, 2010 8:19 PM EST up reply actions

That is a would be great...

I have gotten one or to ppv online and I have an hd screen-newer computer and it still lapsed a bit and I paid $50. Hell charge $25 and I think people would glady stream it, then I could watch it from work. =)

by Da Monkey on Jan 6, 2010 6:39 AM EST up reply actions

I'm pretty sure their hands are ties on the pricing end.

I read somewhere that they can’t go below the PPV price due to their contracts with the PPV providers. Ensuring that they won’t be undercut the PPV offering, essentially forcing people to go the PPV route IMO. If you have ever watched a streaming feed from the UFC website, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

As long as we in the United States continue to buy 500,000 PLUS ppvs.....

NO network deal is in the near future. It is nice that the UK gets EVERY event live on ESPN. It is nice that the UFC is working on just about everyone else getting UFC events…..but here in the US, where mma was built, the UFC will just continue getting filthy rich by selling ppvs.

Why would the UFC want a netwrok deal when they can make a minimum of 500,000-600,000 ppvs. SO us suckers thet keep buying ppvs is making it possible for the UFC to make NETWORK deals around the world.

SO, I will never feel bad by seeing some UFC via “alternative” means. I paid for about, approximately 50 or 60 UFC events in my life. SO Dana can get a netwrok deal and finally REWARD us loyal fans that built the UFC PRE-TUF days

by fightfan on Jan 5, 2010 4:32 PM EST reply actions

It is called theft

Why doesn’t anyone on most Internet site understand illegal streaming is flatout theft. The UFC owns the footage. Do you think they give a crap about “fans” that aren’t actually customers?

People that use a service without paying anything for that service are freeloaders. As a business owner, you don’t really give a crap if you upset them when you decide to do something.

The UFC basically gives away a fight card at least once a month for free on Spike, and gives away plenty of other stuff via Ultimate Fighter and the other clip shows, and most everyone gets upset when they want to protect their wholly-owned premium product?

You all are doomed to being broke the rest of your lives if you can’t figure this part out about business. And, no, it’s not about rewarding fans that built the UFC pre-TUF days. It’s about being thankful that the Zuffa people had the guts enough to drop some ridiculous coin to make this sport even halfway close to legitimate. So much so that they give us a freaking free fight night every month. What was it like back in the day? You were dying for UFC to come out at Blockbuster on VHS like 3-4 times a year? Man, because of Zuffa, I get to watch MMA pretty much on a daily basis if I look hard enough.

Get over it. UFC has the complete right and responsibility to protect its product. Dang freeloaders.

Freeloaders?

I have group of friends that get together and we pay. The thing is I probably wouldn’t be the fan that I am if I didn’t have the opportunity to review past fights and replay a fight night the next day. There is no telling how many fans I have introduced mma to because of my knowledge an passion for the sport. If I have to download every fight of the ufc web site for a price I might become a strikeforce fan. If one considers what it costs to advertise I would think Dana might be smarter to take a pragmatic approach and consider what goes on on the web as a scaled advertising cost???

Sorry Dana

But you only have a finite amount of money to pay people to go after the pirating community and pirates have a way larger group of people willing to work for free. You are out numbered and out gunned. Fighting internet piracy is a losing battle. Ask software publishers, ask movie publishers, ask game makers, ask musicians.

Your best bet is to put out a quality product at a decent price. PC game manufacturers have found that when they release a good product, it sells. It still gets pirated but it sells. When a POS product is released, it’s still pirated, usually more because it sucks and it doesn’t sell well.

So if you want to lose money by waging a war that is already lost, go ahead. Or you can take that all that “money it’s going to cost” you and maybe put together some really good, free cards. On those free cards you should heavily promote your PPV cards. Get people excited to purchase your product. Reinvest your profit in your product to make a better product.

Or whatever, I don’t care. Chase shadows.

I purchase my PPV’s. But I have become more selective because there is one a month and I’m not trying to drop $50 a month for a watered down card. Maybe, just maybe you are cannibalizing your own sales by putting out too many cards. If I buy a PPV this month, I may not be able to buy one next month.

Anyways, enough of this rant. The subject is tired and has been discussed so much in the past 15 years it makes me vomit. Go off and battle internet piracy, better companies than yours has tried.

To go after pirates BUT its just a waste of time, money, and man power like others have stated. Its a losing battle. Sure your can try and take down some here and there but there will be 6 or 7 new ones behind it to take their place.

Something to think about

Each time you don’t buy a ppv and stream it illegally that’s money which could of potentially made the UFC a better organization. Which could lead to many positive things like higher fighter pay, and possibly better shows.

I personally have never streamed a PPV I didn’t purchase. If a card doesn’t appeal to me I simply just check this site once it’s all over.

If you live in another part of the world where the UFC isn’t shown then this post does not apply to you at all. Simply because in order for you to enjoy this sport you have to get it by any means possible.

Bottom line is if its worth streaming it’s worth buying. And just because we live in the internet age where literally anything is at our finger tips for free, it doesn’t make it right.

hmm

Piracy IS an illegal method of getting the fights. BUT the average joe cant fork out the $$$ 12 times a year for it.

Plain old theft

i have to side with the UFC here. Whilst i’ve never paid for a PPV i do watch the free to air events on spike.

i wouldn’t mind so much but people keep posting links to stream content on my Live Chat Concepts websites eg http://www.LiveFootballChat.com (justin.tv links to live streaming of the event etc)

We pull down the links and ban the users pretty much as fast as we can but it’s starting to become a real pain.

At the end of the day content viewing when you didn’t pay for it is theft if the own of the content hasn’t agreed to it.

Anyone who disagrees send me your address so i can come and borrow something of yours.

Cheers,
Dean
