Melvin Manhoef vs Robbie Lawler in the works for Strikeforce: 'Miami' on Jan. 30

Manhoef-lawler_medium

K-1 wrecking machine and mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran Melvin Manhoef (24-6-1) is in talks to make his Strikeforce debut opposite the hard-hitting Robbie Lawler on the main card of the Jan. 30 "Miami" event at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida.

MMAmania.com confirmed the match was under consideration earlier today -- though bout agreements have not yet been distributed and nothing is official at this time.

Manhoef looked "Marvelous" in the FieLDS Dynamite!! 2009 year end supershow, putting Kazuo Misaki on queer street with his trademark blitzkrieg of power punches. It quickly erased his submission loss to Paulo Filho at DREAM 10 last July.

Opponents have shown "No Mercy" when it comes to exposing Manhoef's ground game. In fact, the Dutch destroyer is 7-3 in his last ten fights with all seven wins by way of (T)KO and all three losses by way of -- you guessed it -- submission.

I don't think it's by accident that he's being paired with another dangerous striker who's susceptible to the ground game.

Star-divide

Lawler is coming off a "Ruthless" submission loss to current Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields. Despite entering the June 6 bout on a five-fight win streak, the power-puncher gift-wrapped his head for a textbook guillotine, tapping out to the grappling specialist at just 2:02 in the first round.

His plan was to rebound against the well traveled Trevor Prangley at the Dec. 19 "Evolution" event; however, the South African wrestler was injured just days before the fight, prompting Strikeforce officials to scrap the bout altogether with no suitable replacement to be found.

Lawler was publicly upset about missing a payday, but in the end it may have been a blessing in disguise as Manhoef is a God overseas and a win at "Miami" could really elevate the stock of the HIT Squad striker.

The Jan. 30 Strikeforce event is set to air at 8 p.m. ET live on Showtime and will mark the promotion’s debut in the "Sunshine State." The main event features Nick Diaz vs. Marius Zaromskis for the vacant Strikeforce welterweight title. Current Strikeforce Women's Champion Cristian 'Cyborg' Santos will also be in action against Marloes Coenen.

yeah Melvin knocked out Mark Hunt

Even Chuck Norris couldn’t knock out Mark Hunt.
Well, maybe he could.

Anyway this was badly needed. I was hoping to see Trevor Prangley on a big stage.

A rubber match with Hendo and Misaki could be cool, better yet we could see Melvin and Hendo
under SF banner.

robbie will get hurt in this fight...

it won’t go 3 minutes before they have to pull melvin off of him

Agreed

Horrible match up for Robbie, but an awesome way to introduce MM to the Strikeforce crowd that does not know him yet

by domino effect on Jan 5, 2010 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

yep...MM is just as marketable as KIMBO

"No, I'm like Butch Cassidy..."

"You mess with Mozart, you're gonna get a bullet in your head. Courtesy of Butch Cassidy."

by McArthur... on Jan 5, 2010 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

which would be a good fight for my fellow Kimbo doubters...MM/Kimbo

I think I know what your saying Mac

I want to make sure….MM could be really popular in SF right? Please don’t tell me you think they are on the same level skill wise….

by domino effect on Jan 5, 2010 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

I CAN"T STAND KIMBO and would love to see him face a real striker

kinda like Houston Alexander…but without a stupid gameplan….

you’re calling Houston a real striker? if he would have tried to attack Kimbo he would have been seeing stars in 30 secs.

sometimes the beauty is in the attempt.

you know what I mean RoB...if he's not a stiker what is he then?

I know man, was just teasing you. was actually already posting another one, Melvin would crush most LHW’s in standup fights.

sometimes the beauty is in the attempt.

by most i mean around 90%.

sometimes the beauty is in the attempt.

by RoBerto. on Jan 5, 2010 4:48 PM EST up reply actions

you think Kimbo will stay at 205? I think they're going to make him

"Me and Michael are like Mozart...and Mozart's friend."

"No, I'm like Butch Cassidy..."

"You mess with Mozart, you're gonna get a bullet in your head. Courtesy of Butch Cassidy."

by McArthur... on Jan 5, 2010 4:52 PM EST up reply actions

he has too

I mean who can he beat at hw? But for that matter who at lhw? Lol, man there will need to be a lot of hand picking to keep that career intact. I’m absolutely answerless as to who kimbo fights next without being killed.

I think he should go against Irvin. Hands down. If he gets killed so be it. I’d take sandman.

by daniel worby on Jan 5, 2010 6:13 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

they're def going to make him.

he’ll have a much better chance keeping the fight where he wants against lhw’s. who knows he may even be able to improve his speed as he gets rid of his big blown up biceps. He should fight Jardine next so i can make some money on him.

sometimes the beauty is in the attempt.

by RoBerto. on Jan 5, 2010 7:47 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah he would

He’s going to destroy Lawler too I believe. I’ve been hoping we got this fight, thought they might make it for the CBS show, but I’m glad they made it at all. It will definitely be entertaining.

If this fight stays standing Robbie is getting dropped hard. But if he can get it to the ground he can win Manhoef has a Houston Alexander like ground game.

by groundfightingislovemaking on Jan 5, 2010 3:20 PM EST reply actions

actually melvin has been training at ATT so not quite that bad

by quidnunc on Jan 5, 2010 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

just bought tickets here for my 3rd MMA event. Nick Diaz, Robbie Lawler, Manhoeff, Zarmonskis, Riggs… not too bad.

by Synyster_08 on Jan 5, 2010 3:59 PM EST reply actions

been real impressed with Zarmonskis

but now he’s got a BIG test in Nick….there’s NO WAY Nick’s goin down via head kick

"Me and Michael are like Mozart...and Mozart's friend."

"No, I'm like Butch Cassidy..."

"You mess with Mozart, you're gonna get a bullet in your head. Courtesy of Butch Cassidy."

by McArthur... on Jan 5, 2010 4:01 PM EST reply actions

there's always a chance, your right

but I’m sure you know what I mean…Nick’s smart and will be ready for the head kick…Nick’s also much taller than Mach or Jason High and will be harder for Zammy to connect with…because of Nick’s height, the high kick will be telegraphed from miles away….AND..if he somehow does get a kick through, Nick’s chin is solid enough to withstand it imo

No chance at a KO head kick against Nick

No way in hell.

Frank Mir packed 30+ pounds of solid muscle onto his body in five months. Why hasn't anyone called him out for steroid use? Is it because he never wrestled for Vince McMahon? I give Mir credit for his taste in strippers/wives, not his fighting skills or his personality.

I heart that STRIKEFORCE is doing so well now, and its getting much harder to say that they are simply putting on 1 sided fights. Zaromskis vs diaz and manhoef vs Robbie are great fights that I can see going either way if fought properly.

HOLYSHIT!!!

Wow thats a matchup right there hell yeah!!!
