'Monster' mash: Randy Couture doesn't make it out of the first round against Mark 'Country Boy' Coleman

Deliverance_medium
Props: Close to Earth

Quoteworthy:

"If Mark Coleman is in shape, Randy doesn’t make it past first round. Mark has got heavy hands. He’s got country boy strength. He’s got generations of strong country motherfuckers on his side. He’s excited. He’s going to surprise everyone."

Kevin "The Monster" Randleman sounds off on his friend and former Hammerhouse training partner Mark Coleman in regards to "The Hammer's" upcoming match against fellow UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture. Aside from both being fortysomething, the two wrestlers are former UFC heavyweight champions trying to retain their MMA value as light heavyweights. Does "The Natural" surpass Coleman in the longevity department? Or will the winner of the PRIDE 2000 Open Weight Grand Prix prove he's still got a few tricks up his sleeve at UFC 109 on Feb. 6?

Hammerhouse

Is there any fighter in Hammerhouse that is even decent? Or under the age of 35? That has to be the worst camp now. It used to be a solid camp back in the day when Randleman, Coleman, and Baroni were actually mediocre…now it’s a training camp/retirement home. I bet they play shuffleboard in their spare time from training. Their gym consists of 2 medicine balls and a poster of Hulk Hogan showing off his 24" pythons circa 1989.

I've been saying that since before joe silva even thought about putting the fight together.

All the Hammer needs is cardio. He has way more power, way better chin, better wrestling credentials, more heart (that’s right, i dare anyone to disagree) and couture sucks at fighting off of his back, or side. If it’s ever between wall and stall vs LNP, always go LNP baby, it’s easier to conserve energy. Couture’s hands sucks and the pitter patter shots will only tell Coleman where to shoot the TDs. Add in motivational awesomeness from the Best Eva and The monster. I just don’t see how he loses.

O come on Alpha....

Coleman is going to out wrestle Couture? I don’t think so; and Coleman’s stand up is garbage. Complete crap; this is the one fight where Randy isn’t going to use his wrestling at all except for TDD. I expect him to keep it on the feet use superior head movement/boxing to out point Coleman. Mark is going to dive in for a TD, not get it then press Randy up into the fence trying to get it for 2-3 mins in the first round. Midway second round he’s gassed, I won’t be surprise if Randy TKO’s him with strikes. Couture wins this fight easily cause lets face it; the only guys beating him on the ground have a significant size advantage and unfortunatley for Coleman, this fights at 205.

lol, I never said that he will out-strike Captain Paycheck though, but I do believe that the Hammer possum will put Handy on his back in the 1st rnd. Don’t call it “out wrestle” if you want, but it will happen. Plus Coleman got excellent top control with good GnP. I expect him to keep Randy guessing for the TD’s, nullifying his better boxing and eventually get the TD and put an awesome display of layNpray and GnP on Handy for 2 rnds before getting the TKO. Hammer time is coming baby.

Once Vera lost

I said immediately that this fight was going to happen. I don’t really care for it though. Wins over Vera and Coleman shouldnt really do anything for Randy as wins over Bonner and Couture shouldn’t do anything for Coleman in the LHW division.
They should have named this card UFC 109: Moving Fossils.

IF...

If Randy can get a quality win after this fight; like Jardine, Rashad, Thiago, Little Nog,Rampage; IF he could pull it off against one of them in his next fight I would have absolutley no objection to him fighting for the title. I am a HUGE Couture fan, but if they try to market a title shot after a win over Coleman and a win over Vera; even I’ll be miffed. Agreed that this doesn’t do much for Randy but I think it would be a big win for Coleman. Also, even if he never gets another title shot, a rematch with Ortiz or a 3rd fight with Chuck will still generate some interest and sell some PPV’s. Not saying those are dream match ups; but I can’t help it, I love the legends and would like to see Couture or Chuck go out on a win streak when they retire for good.

by O damn he got caught on Jan 5, 2010 7:43 PM EST up reply actions

This is a huge win for Coleman if he gets it...

Because he’ll still have a job on Tuesday, same with Handy. Neither one of these guys is within 3 fights of a title shot. Sorry to say it OD but your boy is done. He’s slowly being lead out to pasture like Tito, Chuck, Matt Hughes, Cro Cop and Coleman. I like watching all the old guys too, but they shouldn’t be mentioned in title fight talk(unless one of them wins 2 fights against guys in the top 8 of their divisions).

you mean once Vera beat him.

He knocked him down in the 2nd and mounted Randy in the 3rd. this fight with Mark is only to make money on two oldies that are finally over the hill, hope Mark wins the wrestling match and if he does he’s got a small chance.

I scored it a draw,

but we all know that nobody ever scores round 10-10 for some reason.

by DB22 on Jan 5, 2010 7:27 PM EST up reply actions

I guess it must be...

…Although anyone of intelligence would have to question the validity of an assertion worded as haphazardly and shoddily as yours. Even my poor Canadian education permits me that much perspective.

That said, you’re right that Randy didn’t deserve a win for that fight. There are far too many decisions lately that should have been draws. I don’t know what the pressure is to award victories in fights where there’s no clear cut winner. It’s not like Vera or Couture would have been cut loose for drawing that fight…

And your words would need to be “simple” in order for others to understand.

Must be your illustrious state tested, No Child Left Behind education hard at work here in your comments.

(Note: You may want to tread lightly when mucking with Canadians. Unlike the majority of Americans who can’t find their own state on a map OR Canada on a map OF CANADA, we know where you are, how to read and spell and we’re generally very knowledgeable about American politics. You can throw blind, sloppy haymakers if you want. Just don’t be cranky when you get knocked around with crisp counterstriking.)

daniel, that isn’t cool. Mexi isn’t all bad. I enjoy his posts, and if you keep it clean with him he will do the same. You aren’t serious about the American’s being ignorant either, I know you are better than that.

Happy 9/11 isn’t cool no matter where you are from. I am offended by that.

I really don’t care. I can’t talk to that guy. He’s too thick headed. Everytime I try and state something its a war of ignorance with him. I can pretend Vera lost the 3rd round as well, but what’s the point? I’m not stupid I can see he won it. Is it really so difficult to understand the judging and rules in UFC? Randy won the 1st two rounds. He may not have done it by striking fiercely, but he stuck to his gameplan of control and though it was a slow fight, you can’t take a win away for it not entertaining ppl.

by daniel worby on Jan 5, 2010 6:44 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

same thing as the Shad/Silva fight

Winning two rounds to one is still a win. Even if they were losing at the end of the fight.

by jay. on Jan 5, 2010 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

whoa, hold up bro. are you saying Couture won the fight? any human being with two eyes saw Vera CLEARLY won that fight. Couture didn’t take him down, he didn’t hit or anything, fact is he looked more tired from all his clinching than Vera did but that’s totally besides point as this is not a cardio competition.

to make it clear to you Vera knocked Randy down in the third round and take him down more times than Randy got him down, he also had Randy mounted at one time, not to talk about the strikes landed and strikes thrown stats, he was probably 30-0 in that aspect.

sometimes the beauty is in the attempt.

by RoBerto. on Jan 5, 2010 7:59 PM EST up reply actions

sorry knocked him down in the 2nd round and mounted him in the third.

sometimes the beauty is in the attempt.

by RoBerto. on Jan 5, 2010 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

LOL, Roberto

It’s the exact same argument as the last one about Shad/Silva. I think I pointed out the similarities. Randy won 2 rounds to Vera’s one. It doesn’t matter that Vera decided to wake up in the third, he had already lost 2 rounds at that point.

Don’t assume that everyone with two eyes agrees with your horrible judging of fights. You can’t seem to grasp the fact that this isn’t a fight, it is a sporting event. Overall damage isn’t what matters, the damage in each round matters. Randy imposed his will in 2 of the 3 rounds. 30 second bursts (no matter how good they are) won’t win you a 5 minute round. Even holding a guy against the cage is considered imposing you will. It sucks but that is the way the UFC is judged, I hate ineffective wrestling, but it scores points. If Handy holds you against the fence for 12 minutes in a fight, and doesn’t take a lot of damage, he will most likely win.

ps im not visiting this thread again so if you'd like to continue this discussion find me on another thread

Randy controlled the entire fight and there was no reason for Vera to win anything other than the 3rd round.

The scoring system doesn’t allow you to go back and change your previously judged rounds. nor should it.

Randy has this fight if he fights like Randy. His hands are better, better footwork and head movement, better clinch work and better ground game. Coleman could hurt Randy but I just dont see it happening.

Instead of this card being plagued with injuries, it’s gonna be plagued by deaths from old age. I hope they don’t spend a lot of money on marketing this until they make sure that they are both gonna be alive on the fight date.

Then once Jones is done killing Vera they can put Vera against Coleman too, so two seniors and an up and comer can run thru Vera and send him packing.
