Monday Morning Scrap: UFC 108 and FieLDS Dynamite!! week in review
Fans of mixed martial arts were once again treated to an action-packed week chock full of fights thanks to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Fighting and Entertainment Group (FEG) putting forth a bevy of top stars in the heat of battle for their year end conclusions to the 2009 fight campaign.
UFC 108: "Evans vs Silva" went down last Saturday night (Jan. 2) from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and featured a main event of Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva for another shot at light heavyweight contendership. Welterweight stalwart Paul Daley answered the call of grappling guru Dustin Hazelett in the night's co-main event.
When the smoke cleared, was anyone really that upset about having Rashad Evans and Thiago Silva as headliners?
Also blowing up the MMA boards was the marathon event from the Saitama Super Arena as FieLDS Dynamite!! brought K-1, DREAM and Sengoku all under one roof for Japanese bragging rights.
There were plenty of highlights and fantastic finishes but the major angle continues to be Shinya Aoki's bone-crunching submission win over Mizuto Hirota and his controversial post-fight antics.
In cased you missed any or all of it — or just want to keep the discussion alive — below are links to all the major storylines coming out of these events.
Let’s get to it.

thiago missed a huge opportunity
Theres nothing funner than lettin them hands go
-rashad before refusing to let his hands go at ufc 108
Yes and no
He missed the opportunity to potenitally put Rashad away but it was because of Rashad’s commitment to his gameplan that gassed Silva out. Rashad took it easy in the 3rd round cause all that grappling tired him out as well although not as much as Thiago. He wasted more energy taunting Rashad than actually attacking him. solid win for Rashad but I would have like to have seen him use more GnP when he had Silva down but Silva did a great job of getting back to his feet.

Not too bad but
Rashad landed a total of three strikes on the ground. THREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE WHOLE FIGHT!! For it being on the ground that much there is no excuse for that. He probibly could have finished it with some ground and pound, but didn’t even attempt it.
Future fights id like to see
Daley v Alves would be amazing and should be main event in the uk or America even. Id like to see a Stoute v Etim rematch they have both improved and are very good strikers it would make a good fight. others Yvel v Cro cop , Thiago Silva v Bones Jones
WANDY RIP
The lasting memory from this weekend is Aoki snapping Hirota's arm
I loved the Police Man arm lock he had him in prior to the snappage. He was just toying with him.
As far as Alistair Overeem – Japan NEEDS to stop feeding him completely washed up cans. It is getting to the point where Overeem should only be allowed to fight fighters ranked in the Top 20 otherwise, we seriously may kill someone. Still to this day, it appears that he KILLS Texiera with his brutal KO. If someone got killed by a knee, that is exactly how it would look.
prelims
i thought 108 was a pretty exciting card and all, but i watched the prelims on spike, during the ppv i had to rewatch 3 fights, so it kind of took out some of the fun of watching a ppv, in the future i think im gonna just dvr the prelims on spike in case they dont have time to show them on the ppv. the prelim fights were pretty sick the first time around though
blazy j
Good idea on pvr’ing them in future. Last ppv with free prelims, the exact samething happened. Watch em, then re watch em during the ppv. Annoying. But beer and bathroom breaks I guess.

i knew as soon as we saw 4 prelims on spike that we would be watching some again during the PPV. gave me time to roll lol

aoki/hirota
Obviously I watched the fight, seen the antics after the break etc, but I must have missed why he was so worked up somehow? Simply animosity towards Hirota? He ‘fingered’ the crowd as well. What’s the reasoning? Then a quick jog to exit. Can someone help? I haven’t seen a thread quoting him.

F'd up move
Aoki is an ass for that move. i know that submissions can lead to bones being broken and that they had bad blood, but to break a guys arm and then keep going after hearing it pop is messed up in my opinion. If this injury ends up being a career ending one that would be f’d up.

Tap or Snap
It was Hirota’s choice. Yes, Aoki’s antics were bad but Hirota did have a chance to avoid his arm getting snapped.
Hirotas arm
was stuck behind Aokis leg. if you watch he didnt really have a way to tap. Breaking his arm intentionally after already hearing it pop was wack.

I suggest you watch the second meeting of Georges St. Pierre and Matt Hughes (UFC 79).
I want to see daley throw down with a brawler!
Chris lylte, thiago alves, o anthony johnson! I hope overeem finally fights fedor, he’s fought sum of the tuffest guys in k-1 but he’s been smashing str8 cans in mma!
Just to add. Thiago could have finished Rashad. Before this fight while I spent time at Jackson’s I told anyone who asked that if rashad stopped believing he was a striker and used his wrestling to win then he would beat Thiago just fine. Rashads head movement is over rated and his hands are quick but come on think of his wins. Losing to Chuck before the shot. Lost 2 rounds to forrest. Clowned by Machida. If his lapse in judgement vs Thiago in the 3rd round is any indication of his striking defense then Rampage will put him to sleep.
