UFC Quick Quote: Takanori Gomi wants to end his career on the biggest stage in the world
"I didn't want to end my career without fighting on the biggest stage in the world. I welcome any challenge that ignites me. My challenge right now is to become the UFC champion. Honestly, I have reached the age at which I hit my physical peak. My training at American Kickboxing Academy has has served as a great motivation to transform my career. Needless to say, BJ Penn is a high caliber fighter, but so is everyone else in UFC. There is much to learn from BJ's fighting spirit. To tell you the truth, he is a fighter whom I am aiming for. My immediate goal is to establish myself as a UFC fighter and continue fighting in front of the American fans. At this age, I have to train harder than ever. As long as I manage to do so, I just need to look up and continue my ascent. I want to fight at age 60, just like Eikichi Yazawwa (Japanese rock n' roll demigod). The only qualm I have about fighting in America is that my mom will grouse about not being able to come to my fights. Younger fighters will vitalize MMA in Japan -- like Satoshi Ishii. I want to enthrall the fans the world over. They can picture Manny Pacquiao. I will constantly storm ahead with a flurry of strikes."
In a recent interview with UFC.com, former PRIDE lightweight champion, Takanori Gomi voices his ambition in the wake of his recent signing with UFC. Questions linger as to whether he can restore the same winning ways that had catapulted him to the top of the lightweight hierarchy in PRIDE, Nonetheless, the new challenge that awaits him in UFC's stacked lightweight division, as well as his recent training at American Kickboxing, may provide the much-needed fuel to set the smoldering "Fireball Kid" ablaze.

I agree
He hasn’t looked as good as he did since his Pride days…go figure. I think he should get a solid opponent that will stand up with him like Spencer Fisher just to get his feet wet and then if he wins…give a big step up.

That was what I was telling Alpha back in the Gomi signing with the UFC thread...
feed him someone[I even mentioned Guillard] first before giving him Ken-FLo, who at this point, is the real deal amongst 155’ers…

Exactly
Giving him Kenny right off the hop is way too dangerous and why would you want to bring in a talent like Gomi and throw him under the bus so the casual fans will never be able to get behind him. I think he just needs a solid opponent that is mainly a striker and will stand and bang with him like Fisher, Guillard, or Stout. If Gomi wants to seriously get into contention then I think he should have a “warm-up” type fight.

Kenny!
It’s a good start for the Fireball Kid. If he wants to become the champion, must beat Florian and get the title shot next. Gomi is a man who I’d like to see in the UFC. Looking forward to seeing him in action inside the octagon.

normally I'd agree but
if history tells us anything…first time jitters in the UFC/cage reaks havok with fighters from overseas
And it can't be "the lights" 'coz they have lots of those in the Japanese promotions...

i agree... contract?
Do you guys know how many fights he is signed for? Is it a fight by fight review? Either way I tend to agree that he should be given a B level before Kenny.

Real source?
I read Gomi’s words at UFC.com:

Sportsnavi only used it, right?
"Once Flamengo, Flamengo until die"
I would be skeptical, but...
Gomi’s biggest problem as of late has seemed to be a type of lack of motivation. I think the move to AKA signifies real intent and desire to do well. I think he can and will do well as long as he has a desire to do so. Not sure about being a champ, but for sure a threat to anyone else in the division

anyone remember the days when the Japanese media touted fireball kid as good enough to smoke VANDERLEI? ah, those were the days. Seriously though, i still got love for Gomi. he does have the potential ala BJ to hurt a lot of the LW’s in the UFC.

This is wut im taliking about!
Can’t w8 to see Gomi in the cage! he’s put on sum of the best fights i seen!
Florian vs Gomi = Disaster
Ok, if the UFC really wants to build the Gomi brand they need to find another opponent; putting him against Florian is not the way to do it. If theyre trying to fast track him then I guess its a shot in the dark to see if he can pull one out against FLO, but imo Kenny is the baddest 155er (besides BJ of course) in the world and will win 8 out of 10 times against Gomi (at this time). Add that to the enormous pressure of being in a new cage, new rules (elbows, especially Kenny’s), new audience, etc and you’ve got a disaster waiting to happen (a la CroCop).
Instead I would first put him against an opponent like Sam Stout, who loves to trade and engage his opponents. Or even maybe even a Spencer Fischer, Josh Neer, or Mac Danzig. Those are more suitable opponents imo.
