MMA Quick Quote: Marloes Coenen wanted more time to fight Cyborg Santos

Marloes_coenen_vs_cris_cybo_medium

"I feel beat up. It was a tough fight. She was really good, but I think [the referee] stopped it too soon. I was still moving -- she hit me hard but I could take it. I have to see the fight back of course, but [I kept] moving and my defense was high if I'm correct. She won it. She's the champion. Again, I have to see the fight back because I don't remember anything when I'm fighting -- it's all flashes."

-- Former number one 145-pound title contender, Marloes Coenen, tells MMAFighting.com that she would have liked to continue longer in her fight against female champion Cris "Cyborg" Santos at Strikeforce: "Miami." The referee had apparently seen enough, calling a halt to the action midway through the first round. "Rumina" displayed a ton of heart and determination, eating several hard punches and coming back for more. Coenen had a few bright spots of her own, but for the most part was getting handled by the Brazilian brawler. Would a few more minutes and/or rounds have made any difference or was the Dutch fighter simply overmatched?

The fight lasted into the third round. It was not stopped in the first.

I enjoy women’s MMA and hope they continue it. It may be difficult to find someone to beat Cyborg, but there are plenty of good female MMA fighters that are fun to watch. How about Gina and Marloes?

Cyborg is Wanderlai Silva’s little sister (or brother) which doesn’t bold well for the rest of the women’s division.

Is Frank Shamrock gay? He does scream like a girl and that must have been pink lipstick. Also, who is the old douche that does the brief interviews after the fight? There is no flow with his interviews.

still not a fan of chick fights..

and cyborg is as exciting as they get..she does have mad skills..and that being said..not many other chicks will compare..and that makes for a one sided fight.

by sarah- on Jan 31, 2010 1:26 PM EST reply actions

nah, im no fan of cyborg at all, she isn’t that skilled or exciting she’s just a man in a girls division.

fresh like uhh.

by RoBerto. on Jan 31, 2010 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

Mad skills?

Why do people keep saying she has mad skills? Maybe for a girl? From a technical standpoint she doesn’t seem to have ANY “skills”, more like brute force.

She moved her head around though, I’ll give her that.

compared to..

yeah well most chick fights look like newbie guys flailing around..i have to admit that was the first chick fight i watched in entirety that was not just highlights which is what i would only watch when it comes to womens mma..just not a fan..i would rather watch guys fight.

Strikeforce, learn a lesson from that fight last night. NOBODY CARES ABOUT FEMALE MMA! Gina Carano is the only woman in MMA people care about, and it’s only because she’s hot. GIna should be a ring girl, all other female fighters should go away.

by Craig15 on Jan 31, 2010 1:54 PM EST reply actions

Gina wouldn’t cut it as a ring girl.

Thanks for speaking for the rest of us

I think you are wrong is your assumption that nobody cares about women’s MMA. Just like any other sport in the world, women’s MMA (like men’s MMA) is fueled by stars. Women’s MMA is just now getting into the spotlight, and has already developed a few stars that I think people want to watch. If Gina, Cyborg or now Coenen are fighting, I’m watching, and so are many others. As that side of the sport gains more exposure, newer stars will emerge, and the female side of MMA will continue to grow.

ehhh

I find a lot of comments on here way negative

was the strikeforce broadcast team weak? yes…but the womans division is interesting…and those claiming herch didnt look good are stupid…sure his opponent wasnt much, but thats not his fault…he dominated a guy and looked like he should have been a pro fighter his entire life…

as for Gina, ring girl? you kidding me? she makes the ring girls look pretty vile….and thats pretty sexist…Good for Gina to kick ass, and be really really really hot.

you're an idiot

it was a better quality of MMA than in the Walker fight. TKO via punching in the shoulder. I for one am a fight fan, a good fight is a good fight, I don’t care if the fighters need to wear a cup or not.

Spinning, how the hell are ya!

I will agree with you 100% Marloes and Cyborg was 3 times more exciting and of better quality then the Hershel fight and 10 times more techinical then the Lashley/Simms fight! While womens mma may be light years behind mens mma as a whole, there are still some womens match ups that would be more exciting and technical then some of the current mens undercards.

just been pretty busy, haven’t had much time to be commenting. The people in my office actually expect me to get some work done every now and then. Can you believe that!?

Hey what were your thoughts on the MM vs Lawler fight?

I personally thought that the fight wasn’t a great advert for Robbie. The way I think I can best put it, is that Robbie didn’t win, Melvin lost. Robbie was getting beat to hell and back, Melvin wasn’t positioning his hands correctly when he kicked and he got caught by a beast of a punch, but if you watch a replay, I don’t even think Robbie was looking when he threw it. Damn shame for Melvin. but I don’t think Lawler deserves much praise for that performance.

I felt he got the W with the classic punchers chance...

I think Melvin got lazy and put his hands down when he had him hurt. If Robbie wanted to win that fight clean he had to take it to the ground, expose Melvins ground game, he has good wrestling. I think he was looking for that punch, it was the classic Rampage-Cover up and turtle roll and come up with the hook. If you notice with like with 1 minute and 35 seconds, Lawler covers and rolls once and misses and then does it the same exact way again and catches him with it, perfectly. Manhoff figured him done and was just imo trying to tee off on him instead of being professional and keeping his hands up while going in for the kill. About 2 minutes into he the fight his hands are at his side everytime he goes in for the strikes. With an iron jawed power puncher like Lawler that has disaster spelled all over it. Sad part is had Melvin just taken it to the second round I am not sure Lawler would have even been able to come out. He was limping hard 30 seconds after the fight was over, usually the adrenaline will carry you out longer then 30 seconds. I can’t imagine him being able to do much walking Sunday or today. Ugg those leg kicks hurt me watching them. I don’t think Lawler deserves huge praise, but it was an exciting win, rather then a smart win! Lawler is to 1 dimensional for todays fighters and his level of striking is not where it needs to be to consistently win against K-1 level fighters.

by Da Monkey on Feb 1, 2010 9:46 AM EST up reply actions

A more than fair assesment!

I could almost see it coming, I watched it Sunday night, and I had just spent most of Sunday morning training kicks. Doing positioning drills and I could see his left hand dangling down by his waist when it should be up covering his chin (whilst kicking with the right leg). but then it occurred to me that his hands may have been low on purpose because he was afraid of the takedown.

Coenen would probably knock her out, this fight was much better from a technical standpoint.

female mma rocks!!

Female mma is awesome. The Cyborg fight was like 10,000 times more exciting than the H. Walker fight. Next up for Cyborg, bring on Toughill. Bring on Erin Toughill. That would be some kinda war. Female cage fighting is here to stay, and there are lots of fans that luv watching it.

i like me some womens mma

i like it when the girls can actualy fight, last nights chick fight was a total brawl and i had fun watching it. I still dont know the top dogs in womens mma, but im a big fan of cyborg, gina, and kelly verra, and now coenen because she took one hell of a beating and still wanted more, i love me a tough chick.

the fight that haunts me about womens mma was the kim cotoure fight that she won, where the other girl just ran away, and every now and then would turn her head and throw out a hammer jab slap type of “punch”

by Blazy j on Jan 31, 2010 2:22 PM EST reply actions

It was decent...

Coenen landed some really good shots on Cyborg. Cyborg just took them with out a flinch. Its crazy to see that imo. Cyborg gave her a beating tho thats for sure lol

Dont think Marloes had much left

If she disagrees with the timing that might be debatable, but not the beating she was receiving.

And really, the “Rickson Gracie of women’s MMA”???!
Really?!

they really need to get some of these female bodybuilders to convert to mma…theres such a huge gap between cyborg and everyone else in terms of brute force…I wanna see someone she cant throw around like a rag doll and wont be intimidated

Great fight.

Those two women could of beat half the other fighters on the card. I prob would of given it fight of the night, besides Diaz V Marius.

Marloes is the better technician.

Her striking was excellent and her defence on the ground was good, but at the end of the day Cyborgs power and aggression was too much. Strikeforce needs some true 145lb women to bring to fight to Cyborg, and by that I mean women that cut down from 160lbs to make 145lbs.

by JayWQ on Jan 31, 2010 7:30 PM EST reply actions

Good thing it ended when it did

Her post fight pic doesn’t look like needed any more time in the cage with Cyborg.

by sudnvictory on Jan 31, 2010 8:12 PM EST reply actions

I think it was stopped early also, marloes was defending herself well and moving. That said she never really had cyborg in trouble at any point, she landed some good shots but cyborg walked right through them, and cyborg defended her sub attempts well. Still I dont think Coenen lost any respect in this fight. Id like to see her in the upcoming 135 tourney.
