Vitor Belfort: Anderson Silva seemed 'upset or nervous' at UFC 112 pre-fight face off

Silvabelfort_medium

Quoteworthy:

"I don’t know what happened, he seemed upset or nervous, I don’t know. We were face to face, but we didn’t greet each other. Some people like to stare down, but when the fight is on it doesn’t matter who can hold the stare the longest. I won the heavyweight tournament and the light heavyweight championship, and I want to be called a UFC champion again. Anderson is really dangerous and has all these weapons, but I have a good chance, and I’m working on a strategy to beat him."

UFC number one middleweight contender Vitor Belfort seems to have rattled the cage of current division champion Anderson Silva during a recent trip overseas to promote their upcoming title fight at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi on April 10. "The Spider" wasn't his usual jovial self -- but is that an indication of pre-fight trepidation or was it simply his war face? "The Phenom" may find out the hard way -- though it's hard to overlook his resume when arguing against his chances this Spring. Upset special, or just another victim?

Just another victim

Granted, Andy is one of my favotites. Should be an awesome fight.

I agree

I would say anderson wins this one 9 out of 10 times. It’s all hype.

I say 5 out of 5

… because if they actually fought 10 times, they’d figure each others’ strategies out, so it ups the chances each time for an upset.

Belfort...

is dangerous of course as he has shown time and time again but Anderson’s on another level.

I'd like to see Vitor win this one.

Anderson is seroiusly the most lethal fighter in mma today but...

Id really like to see vitor get his head right and pull off a dominating win…specially with all that happened to his sister and all..Im a huge andy fan but Im rootin for vitor is this one..and I think alotta the oldschool fans will be too.

I'll be rooting for Vitor all the way..

And he will be the most competitive fight Anderson has had in the striking department in his UFC carreer. Vitor has the hand speed to touch him and the power to hurt him and the technical ability to hold his own. The only ? around Vitor has always been his mentality and as of late I don’t think there’s any reason to doubt this guys focus. He’s cleaned up well over the past couple years and he’s KOing some good fighters very quickly; hell Rich lasted longer against A. Silva than he did against Belfort. Lindland is a professional blanket and he got dropped like it was nothing (visciously too; that was seriously a scary KO). I like Vitor in this fight; he’s deserving of some good fortune and hopefully he can make it happen.

If anyone beats Andy then I hope it's Vitor

He’s a class act and a great fighter who has been through a lot of personal tragedy, it would be the perfect story if he could come back and win the MW title over the p4p king. Obviously I want Andy to go undefeated in the UFC before retiring but I won’t be too upset if Vitor is the one to beat him.

Upset?

I like Anderson but I’m ready for the middleweight division to get shook up.

by knowone on Jan 30, 2010 11:55 AM EST reply actions

Belfort chances

Vitor is known for his explosiveness but he slows down as the fight goes long. He said recently Anderson is dangerous walking back because of his ability of attacking and the Phenom intends not to commi t the same mistake. Then how Vitor will get close to apply his big hand? In the distance, the Spider will use his reach and Muay Thai to annull the contender and it’ll be another disappointing fight if they respect one another so much. The way to go over Silva is walking towards him with confidence and attitude but will Belfort be successful? I don’t believe so.

Great Fight

I think this will be awesome, not too long 1 round or 2 but should be explosive and very entertaining. I got Vitor by tko either late round 1 or early round 2

by JJDYNAMITE on Jan 30, 2010 11:59 AM EST reply actions

very possible, Vitor can definitely compete with Anderson in boxing.

Yeah...

and if Vitor can purposely punch Silva in the back of the head like he did Franklin, this will be a quick night!

by leerage on Jan 30, 2010 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

now way that franklin head shot was on purpose..when has vitor ever been a dirty fighter?

by salamagogo on Jan 30, 2010 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

those last three punches didnt affect the outcome of the fight

it was the left hook on the chin when franklin was on his knees that ended the fight lavigne just didnt see it or would have ended it before the last 3

by dia mette on Jan 30, 2010 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

You're right, they didn't effect the outcome of the fight.

But that doesn’t justify Vitor to throw those punches.

Lavigne just didn’t see it or would have ended it before the last 3"

He is freakin standing right there, how could he not see??

by leerage on Jan 30, 2010 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

then what was he supposed to do? punch him in the body because Rich had his face right down.

fresh like uhh.

by RoBerto. on Jan 30, 2010 5:17 PM EST up reply actions

leerage you retard

“watch the last 3 punches”

if you really were watching them with your damn eyes you would’ve seen the first of the last 3 was a hammer fist to the side of the head, and then a punch to the other side of the head, and ONLY the last one being a punch to the back of the head, as ace was OUT after the 2nd last one. vitor was doing the same punch for the 2nd and 3rd one, but ace’s head spun to the right after the 2nd punch, causing the back of his head to face vitor’s left punch.

lavigne saw the shit go down, fair shit btw, and he stopped it correctly.

some people are so damn retarded to not even watch the clip carefully.

by kdwag on Jan 30, 2010 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

Last two

… the first of those last three was a hammer fist to the right side of Franklin’s head. The second one was behind the ear, as evidenced by Franklin’s head movement. The last one, yes, right on the back of the head.

by MMACrossfire on Jan 30, 2010 6:13 PM EST up reply actions

UPSET!!I really think belfort can take this one…not sure how just yet but i strongly think Belfort can do it….i’m going to say either 3rd round tko or unanimous decision

LOL

Are you guys really picking a guy with one fight back in the UFC to beat arguably the best fighter in the world? Anderson tko 2nd round. Unless his elbows still fucked and he’s hiding it.

by theworldismine on Jan 30, 2010 12:05 PM EST reply actions

He isn’t just some guy with a win in the UFC, it’s Vitor Belfort and he’s back as explosive as ever + he’s an amazing boxer. ppl who think this will go like AS fights against Hendo, Forrest, Thales, Cote, Marquardt are wrong! Vitor is so much better standing than those guys combined with his power, speed, explosiveness.

fresh like uhh.

by RoBerto. on Jan 30, 2010 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

I would love to see another Hendo and Vitor fight thats for sure...too bad though we won't.

I agree this may be the best striker Anderson has faced but at the same time this is the best striker Vitor has faced. Who’s better at the stand up? Hand striking lets say your right but all around stand up I don’t think so from kicks, to the clinch to movement in the octagon + a big reach advantage? He has a decent chance no doubt but I just don’t see his striking alone to be enough.

Really this shouldn't even be a debate....

Yeah vitor is explosive, but face it AS is to smooth on the feet for him his stand up is “phenominal” AS by ref stoppage late first early second
and i don’t think silva has ever been KO"d he tood a few big rights from hendo and didn’t seem to affect him i’m pretty sure he can take a few from belfort

Anderson is the best in the world, F*ck Fedor, andy would make that sloppy can fighter look like a fool!!!!!

I think Vitor has the best chance of beating Silva

HI YAH!

by Thats It For you! on Jan 30, 2010 12:59 PM EST reply actions

He has a chance, how good of a chance?

Silva has been on another level above all other fighters for sometime now, like BJ at LW Anderson has dominated the MW division and has made good fighters look bad. With little weakness and very few against against Silva what does Vitor have that will penetrate Silvas defence? There is no doubt if Vitor connects he has the power and ability to finish the fight but at the same time so does Silva and chances are Silva will strike first becuase of his ability to avoid damage and counter with deadly accuracy and power. I feel another great fighter is going to fall into the Spiders web and fall victim to the pound for pound best fighter in the world.

If i recall right, outside of Chuck

No one has ever beat Vitor standing and that was a yoooung Chuck Vitor has improved greatly since then he is not just speed+power anymore if this fight stays standing which i believe it will definitely picking Vitor to upset the Champ.

Hell I could probs get some you guys straight across! Geez!

by daniel worby on Jan 30, 2010 5:11 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Woah....

First of all, Anderson is a MUCH better striker than Vitor. Just exploding on someone doesn’t mean you are an excellent striker, Anderson is a very technical striker, he has pin-point accuracy, knows when and where to deliver shots, and hits so hard that he can KO people while backpedaling and throwing a light jab, which is what happened when he fought Forrest Griffin. And he dropped James Irvin with one hit to his face, and left a pretty nasty mark on him, and let’s not forget the elbow in the Tony Fryklund fight.

Not to mention Anderson’s insane ability to dodge hits. Damn, the man could probably dodge bullets.

Also, Anderson has a chin that is made of iron, he got hit by both Hendor and Jorge Rivera, which didn’t even phase him. He’s never been rocked throughout his MMA career. He’s only lost from submissions and decisions. No KO’s, no TKO’s, just lucky submissions (Ryo Chonan’s flying scissor heel hook was complete luck, and saved him from getting KTFO’d), and 1 decision.

Anderson knows better than to let Vitor explode on him, you’re seriously underestimating him. They don’t call him the “Best in the World” for nothing.

by insomniatric on Mar 14, 2010 3:51 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think Silva's face matters in the least...

… when you consider that the fight is still months away. Who cares whether Silva was jittery at the face-off? Nobody stays in the same emotional state for even a few hours, let alone months. Nervous or not, he’ll be ready to rumble on fight night. Guaranteed.

by MMACrossfire on Jan 30, 2010 6:16 PM EST reply actions

Sad to say it.. But

THIS is NOT a BOXING MATCH. If it was Vitor would have a high chance at winning. But it’s not, and as much as I want to see Vitor KO Anderson.. Vitor will have no answer for Kicks, and Thai clinch, and Anderson is much stronger. I hope we see that his mind and focus to never quit exists but I don’t think that will help him one iota. Anderson is too good.

by Pain on Jan 30, 2010 7:06 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Nooooo

How is Anderson stronger? You must forget that Belfort fought at HW and even held the LHW belt at one point..

wow..great posts.. as far as Vito not being a good place mentally..forget about it!! This dude is so sound and grounded its scary.Dude is crystal clear and is very humble and knows whats whats and has no misunderstanding as to the reality of the matter. Andy hasn’t necessary been “not there” mentally.. maybe we can say for Cote or Leites he wasn’t really in the fight but those guys weren’t core enough to take advantage of Andy being off.. The phenom…well that will be a different story

by fistoffury on Jan 30, 2010 8:08 PM EST reply actions

Everyone champ's reign comes to an end!

Hey I like both these fighters, but AS can’t win every fight. Vitor has some of the fastest hands ive every seen, he pretty much made rich look like an amatuer on the feet, he waited and saw what Rich had and then when he realised the speed advantage he had he blew him away.. Obviously AS did the same but he doesn’t have the hand speed Vitor has. On the feet it will be interesting to see how anderson deals with this…..
I would like to see Vitor win by KO, but i’m not betting on it!
