UFC 108: Sam Stout got a chance to prove he's not just a one-dimensional striker

Stout-lauzon_medium

"I've been trying to improve my game and become more of a well-rounded mixed martial artist. I did get a chance to show I'm not just a one-dimensional fighter who only knows how to strike. That was a great feeling for me and I'm really happy with my performance."

-- Sam Stout talks to the Canadian Press about his "Fight of the Night" against the returning Joe Lauzon at UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" last night (Jan. 2) in Las Vegas. "Hands of Stone" has been active in the 155-pound division under the Zuffa banner since his debut at UFC 58: "USA vs. Canada" way back in March 2006 and is perhaps best known for his stand-up wars with Spencer "The King" Fisher. The Ontario native was on a mission to prove he was more than just a tough kid with good hands at last night's event. Did his award winning performance at "Evans vs. Silva" do enough to convince you?

happy for him..

he did awesome..i picked against him, even though he is a fellow canadian..(cuz i thought he’d get sub’d) but he really looked great..

he has always been in exciting fights, now he’s starting to win. Lauzon and Wiman aren’t firest tier guys but they are solid wins. Wonder what`s next for him….

Gomi

thats who should be next for him… I’d love to see it!!

by PHISH NATION on Jan 3, 2010 6:34 PM EST up reply actions

he needs a more suitable nickname....

Gutted for Joe as he’s one of my favourite fighters…

Stout won’t rise above upper-mid level in the ufc LW division

by Wet Nightmare on Jan 3, 2010 5:24 PM EST reply actions

I agree

Maybe that’s why I’m so hard on him. You should be able to KO people with a nickname like hands of stone. He threw everything he had and never really hurt Lauzon. If he was more honest and called himself hands of marshmallow, I think he’d have a new fan.

Seriously though he looked pretty good, that was a decent scramble in the first round to avoid the sub.

Or give credit to lauzons chin, he took many shots, but I’m happy it was good fight, lauzon just came back, he looked horribly out of shape, wouldn’t mind seeing rematch after lauzon stacks 3-4 wins

Sam "Hands of Decisions" Stout?

What do you need a fancy suit for, Charlie, you ain't got no job to wear it to.

by clover_black on Jan 3, 2010 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

Lol...

Hands of decisions…

I still have to give him credit. He was going for it the whole fight and didn’t take his foot off of the gas.

by Shadyone33 on Jan 3, 2010 6:45 PM EST up reply actions

stout does yeah.

his standup isn’t all that technical and his power isn’t impressive, may still be above average if u consider the low standard of striking in the UFC LW divison but hearing them talk about how UFC fighters are excellent at this and that makes me sick. Stout looks stiff and basically has his feet up in the air when he throws that’s why he can’t knock anybody out.

sometimes the beauty is in the attempt.

by RoBerto. on Jan 3, 2010 6:00 PM EST up reply actions

wrong again

Stout’s striking is very technically sound. Its not prefect, but who’s is? He has some of the best technical striking in the division if not the entire UFC

by PHISH NATION on Jan 3, 2010 6:36 PM EST up reply actions

Roberto, what?

Not technically sound? That’s the only thing Stout has going for him. Those were some beautiful combos last night.

Frank Mir packed 30+ pounds of solid muscle onto his body in five months. Why hasn't anyone called him out for steroid use? Is it because he never wrestled for Vince McMahon? I give Mir credit for his taste in strippers/wives, not his fighting skills or his personality.

by jay. on Jan 3, 2010 6:38 PM EST up reply actions

I said he isn’t all that technical, meaning his technique isn’t the best but certainly not bad. He’s one of the better at LW but it takes technique to punch hard and knock someone out too u know and he hasn’t done that in a long time, quality over quantiy any day, he should plant his feet and throw better harder combos.

Joe Lauzon is worthless standing up and was outclassed, and the standard of the striking in UFC is weak.

sometimes the beauty is in the attempt.

I know what you said.

“his standup isn’t all that technical” And you are wrong, he is a very technical stand up fighter. What happened to the pool picture? This picture doesn’t even look anything like the last one. You are neither of these people, are you?

well i disagree, and i’ve even heard a longtime K-1 champion and a muay thai champion comment on it. sure it’s very technical compared to most UFC fighters as most of them are coming from grappling backgrounds.

sure it was me on the other picture a long time ago had it as i knew someone would probably comment on it, my legs look like spaghetti. this one’s badr hari.

I understood.

Oh..

I see what you are saying, you weren’t being clear. Stout doesn’t have technical stand up compared to good Kickboxers or boxers, but his stand up is fairly clean compared to other MMA fighters.

I know it is Badr Hari, even with my limited exposure to K1 fighters I can pick this dude and Semmy out of a line up, but I figured the other dude wasn’t you either.

He doesn't have overwhelming power, but he is a good technical fighter

Nothing wrong with beating Lauzon in a decision. There are lots of UFC LW’s who would give their left nut for this result.

HE showed great scrambling ability, I honestly wouldn\t doubt that we see Fisher/Stout 3. Why not, they are pretty close to eachother in the division right now with Fisher beating Uno then losing to Stevenson.

Really enjoyed this fight.

Last round Stout put on a clinic, very impressed I have to say.

I"m no Ned Flanders punk!!

Lauzon owned Stout in the first round

Lauzon gassed because of inactivity and Stout still couldn’t put him away. Lauzon made that fight of the night. I don’t like that Paul Semtex Daley got a bonus even though he didn’t make weight.

by Bullybeater on Jan 3, 2010 7:56 PM EST reply actions

Lauzon made that fight of the night??

By covering up and throwing nothing after the first 2 minutes? Joe gassed and shouldn’t get any bonus money for that performance.

haha

Agree with you here Jay. Lauzon couldn’t fight anymore after he had put it all on the line with that kimura.

by Crackkbaby on Jan 3, 2010 9:52 PM EST up reply actions

i agree too but...

the way he went out and caught fire and dove for that kimura and it was very exciting. he looked like he was going to dominate the fight so when stout wore him down and began picking him apart, it really added a sense of drama. this was the for sure fight of the night but more so for stout for sure.

by avalonzero on Jan 4, 2010 1:22 AM EST up reply actions

not convinced he has a ground game....

but impressed with the fight. big win for stout. why not give him miller? they both won and are at about the same level in the lw division.

formerly JB, trying to figure out this whole new SB deal. oh, and another thing; i'm not impressed by your performance.

Stout always brings it

I’d rather watch one of his fights over Brock, GSP, or any other wrestlers.

by K S on Jan 3, 2010 10:12 PM EST reply actions

yeah stout is always entertaining

i love the way he worked the body. it really opens things up. i think more strikers need to take advantage of it. it’s easy to get caught up in going for the chin all the time and become predictable.

by avalonzero on Jan 4, 2010 1:18 AM EST reply actions

always wanted to see

Joe Lauzon v Terry Etim but also possible is Etim Stoute rematch

WANDY RIP
