Queer Street Blues: Yvel KO propels Junior dos Santos into UFC heavyweight contender mix

Yvel-out_medium

What a difference a year makes.

In October 2008, unknown heavyweight striker Junior dos Santos was being "fed" to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 90 in an attempt to elevate "Vai Cavalo" into the UFC heavyweight title chase.

Fast-forward to January 2010 and it's "Cigano" who's in pursuit.

Dos Santos cemented his place among the heavyweight big guns last night at UFC 108 when he had former Pride FC and Affliction fighter Gilbert Yvel counting sheep in the first round of their main card bout.

All went according to plan says the Nogueira disciple.

"I noticed when he was coming in he was trying to counter attack with a punch, so what I did was I came in low and knew I would come up with a high hook and that’s exactly what I did. We trained that."

The Brazilian slugger is now undefeated (4-0) inside the Octagon with four straight finishes. His victims include the aforementioned Werdum, rising star Stefan Struve, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic and of course his latest casualty, Gilbert Yvel.

Not exactly a who's-who of MMA tin cans.

Now the question coming out of the MMA community is "Who's next?"

Star-divide

The next two months will help clear the murky waters that are the UFC heavyweight division. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will battle Cain Velasquez at UFC 110 on Feb. 21 in Australia while Shane Carwin and Frank Mir duke it out on March 27 in New Jersey -- with the winner expected to challenge Brock Lesnar for the 265-pound strap upon the champ's return.

If he even returns at all.

Regardless, the top four will soon go to battle for their right to become champion and Dos Santos will likely be paying close attention to the outcome of each contest. He may not be next in line for a title shot -- but he's closer than he's ever been before.

Where does he go from here?

winner of Carwin vs Mir

this guy has the ability 2 take them both out .. If Brock ever comes back he’s one of only a few I see capable of beating him also

so then Dad goes and turns the knife on her .. then he turns to me and sez ........................................... Why so Serious ??

Give him Gonzaga

I’ve been saying this for ages he was suppost to fight him at ufc 108 that didn’t happnen but make it happen now. Let’s see jds ground game before he gets a title shot by that time Mir nd Carwin and Nog nd Cain will have already been done then it give him 3 or second crack at the belt depending on if Brock is still with us.

that would be too easy

knockout in under 2 minutes. jds trains with nog brothers? he must have a ground game. i just think everybody who has fought him knows this and rather stand with him. that will probably change.

i'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. i was building a house, i don't deserve this, deserves have nothing to do with it. "unforgiven"

Dos Santos & Big Nog Another Machida & A. Silva

Dos Santos will not fight Big Nog – he is his coach, training partner and friend. it is going to be very interesting to see who the UFC gives him next. I hope it is the winner of Mir and Carwin!

gettin sick of these friendships in the fight game

These guys should be fighting anyone standing in there way of that belt .

Jordan was friends with Barkley but when the finals rolled around he made sure he whipped his teams ass

so then Dad goes and turns the knife on her .. then he turns to me and sez ........................................... Why so Serious ??

Dunking on an acquittance and punching a training partner shouldn't be compared.

Ever.

Frank Mir packed 30+ pounds of solid muscle onto his body in five months. Why hasn't anyone called him out for steroid use? Is it because he never wrestled for Vince McMahon? I give Mir credit for his taste in strippers/wives, not his fighting skills or his personality.

what if a fight against big coutry won't go the ground?

would def be a step back for him if u ask me, i think his name is out there now and the winner of Mir/Carwin would be just perfect. Junior is probably top 3 and definitely top 5.

sometimes the beauty is in the attempt.

agree

Big Country shouldnt even be mentioned as an opponent yet ..JDS is def in the top 5 ufc heavyweights and big country aint in the top 10

so then Dad goes and turns the knife on her .. then he turns to me and sez ........................................... Why so Serious ??

no he’s not. Gilbert Yvel should be thinking about about moving down to 205 if he’s gonna be competing in the UFC. I would like to see McSweeney/Yvel next, both of them should really not be fighting at Hw.

Why not big country?

We can see where both guys are.

A win over Yvel throws someone into the contender mix?

I thought he already was. Yvel is not a contender. The only reason he was on this card is because Dana was doing Lewis a favor.

im not going to boost UFC by saying it has the best fighters in the world etc etc Yvel wasnt in shape and everyone could see that.

i hope he returns soon.

what jj belt does dos santos have?

i gotta believe he does have somewhat of a ground game given where he is from and who he trains with

Theres nothing funner than lettin them hands go
-rashad before refusing to let his hands go at ufc 108

Man Lynx, his stand up doesn't sucks after all, lol

I will go even further by saying that, b/c he will never face Big Nog… I don’t see anyone that will be able to stop JDS, except maybe Brock, but I’m not even sure about that. Dos Santos is for sure the real deal and I can say that I’m proudly a new fan.

He is for real

I’m not a fan, but I enjoy watching his fights.

I don't know about that guru

I like the guy, but his winning or losing would have no effect on me. I don’t care for him. I think he puts on a show, so does Scott Smith. I appreciate his talents, but don’t care how he does. Maybe I’m wrong and what I described is a fan?

Looks like JDS is for real.

I’ve been saying all along that I wasn’t that interested in him but he is for sure the real deal. I’d love to se him fight Mir, only to see Mir how Mir would cope. If Mir pust him away, then I see Mir getting his title back at some stage.

LOL

The man is finally training and it shows. he always had the frame to add weight he just never committed to the gym as much as he did to the bar then. And second off at 100 he weighed in at 245 so it’s only 20 pounds he added for this one jay that would be five pounds per month.

i thought the stoppage was early. between the dynamite and this event there have been quite a few early stoppages

JDS looked awesome last night.

He is becoming one of my favorite fighters. I definitely see him in the mix at the top of the division.

by HEELHOOK on Jan 3, 2010 2:33 PM EST reply actions

I would like to see him face someone that will challenge his ground game like Cain or Carwin

I think he should face the loser of the Carwin and Mir fight the winner of that fight facing the winner of the NOG Cain fight and go from there.

by Puck Head on Jan 3, 2010 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

nope

he should fight any of those guys. the valazquez nog fight is for number 1 contender after mir and carwin go at it and roy isnt in juniors league yet so i say none of those

by enjoimike49 on Jan 3, 2010 4:27 PM EST reply actions

I think JDS would be competitive and maybe beat...

Nog, Mir, Carwin and Cain. He deserves the number one contenders fight, not Shane Carwin.

Both steps down compared to all 4 guys I mentioned.

But, those two fights are likely since the other 4 guys all have fights booked.

People seem to forget that Gilbert Yvel only had about a month to train for this fight which is crazy if your going against a guy like JDS. props to JDS though but if you watch the replay Yvel was about an inch short of landing a devestating hook at the same time. it would have been sick to see a double KO even though Yvel recovered and we havent seen JDS chin tested. i do belive that it was a early stoppage he seemed to recover very quickly and rolled over to gaurd right when it stoped unfortunatly. o well cant wait to see Yvel back and in shape!!! i wanna see some crazy jumping ax kicks and shit

by darr d on Jan 3, 2010 8:55 PM EST reply actions

Still like to see JDS vs Gonzaga

Gabe has been inconsistent but certainly can beat most on any given night. Yvel fight was too quick. Don’t think Gilbert was in shape but he did take the fight on short notice so kudos to him.

Is it me or on some of these referees stoppages does it seem like just the motion of the dominant fighter throwing punches whether they are landing and doing damage or not influence the refs to pull the plug on the fight?
