Who do Maniacs think will be dethroned first?

The UFC holds (imo.) 3 of the top pound for pound fighters in Anderson Silva, Georges St.Pierre, and BJ Penn whom all hold gold in their respective divisions. All 3 look unstoppable at the moment with no legit contenders in their paths. Who do you guys think will be the first to be dethroned?

Well seeing as I have 20 words to go before I can post, I'll let you guys know I think its going to be Anderson Silva loosing to Vitor.

i voted Anderson

because he’s the oldest and the others will still be in their prime when Anderson starts leaving his.

I think GSP will be the last one to retire, and therefore lose his title.

I also think GSP will be the last one to change his shirt. Go shopping, Georges! You can afford more than one grey sweater. Unless he bought seven grey sweaters and wears a different one every day. Which would be even more weird…

How do you guys know he doesn't have 10 identical sweaters or suits

Fedor once bet NASA he could survive re-entry without a spacesuit.

On July 19th, 1999, a naked Fedor re-entered the earth's atmosphere, streaking over 14 states and reaching a temperature of 3000 degrees. An embarrassed NASA publically claimed it was a meteor, and still owes him a beer.

LOL Personally I think its better if he only had the one of each.

Owning 10 identical sweaters and suits would just be plain stupid imo., reminds me of a cartoon character. I think GSP’s just the type of person who spends so much time in the gym training and what not that he doesn’t bother buying a lot of clothing. Like he said he didn’t have a lot growing up so he’s prob. used to not owning a lot of clothing.

I was just being a dick to gsp sorry mac lol. he prob owns a couple suits but like us when we own something we really like we wear it wayy more then anything else.

This is too difficult to call, I can't even make myself vote.

Of all the champions in the UFC I would say Machida will be the first one to go down.

by MMACHAMP on Jan 29, 2010 9:16 PM EST reply actions

yeah

I was gunna say Machida. With each one of these guys it would take a lucky shot or very bad performance to lose, so its impossible to call. I think BJ may be the biggest lock though, unless Florian really takes it to another level.

I had a hard time picking someone. Had to go with Andy, although chances are it would be GSP. I just couldn’t vote GSP.

"i only want to be known as the best ever, is that too much to ask?" - BJ Penn.

by Omoplato on Jan 30, 2010 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

Its GSP

He he the fighter that most recently lost in his division. He got clipped and tapped to strikes. Hughes had BJ in a waaay worse situation in the crucifix with the vicous elbows raining down and BJ didn’t tap – the ref had to stop the fight.

BJ in invincible at LW.

Anderson takes zero damage in his fights. Only way he loses is to a VERY dominant wrestler. But, Hendo is in Strikeforce now.

GSP will most likely be moving up to MW and won’t have quite as much of a strength advantage as he currently enjoys at WW. I’d like to see Nate Marquardt vs GSP or see Rashad drop to MW and fight GSP. BUT, GSP is “friends” with them so he won’t fight them. Watch him become “boys” with every Top 10 MW so he has no worthy opponents.

I AM SOMETIMES BIASED - Get over it!!!!!!!

by ViolentMike on Feb 2, 2010 10:01 AM EST up reply actions

BJ was not in a worse situation than GSP. GSP had been clipped on the back of the head and had lost his equililbrium. He then ate several bombs standing and on his back from a powerful puncher.

Hughes couldn’t punch his way through a wetnap. He just had BJ’s arm pinned and dropped some elbows while BJ was defenceless. BJ was never hurt prior to those elbows, and he was never smashed standing. He was just tired.

BJ had to wait until later in his career to be in as bad a situation as Georges was. And then he quit like a little bitch. In his corner. And called his mom.

Also, if you’re going to pull up old fights as examples of what could happen in the future, BJ’s LW fights against Uno, Serra and Pulver aren’t exactly a ringing endorsement of his “invincibility”. GSP has beaten a lot more top-ranked fighters at WW than BJ has at LW.

BJ is older and will retire before GSP, and he has a knack for getting fat and out of shape. GSP will be champion long after BJ has sailed off into the Hawaiian sunset.

Bj is a lock for not losing he is that damn dominate at his weight

It comes down to gsp and andy, and the difference between andy and gsp is that andy has finished everyone who has challenged besides leites pathetic attempt at a title shot. After Andy beats vitor which I know he will there is no one that he hasn’t destroyed. I believe that Koschek and thiago alves will rematch gsp and will be greatly improved from there last fights and both prove to be a greater threat than there previous matches. Silva and Bj both have destroyed and finished everyone that has challenged for there belts besides the leites fights, thats something gsp hasn’t done.

by mma guru on Jan 30, 2010 12:59 AM EST reply actions

Had to pick Anderson

Even though I think he is the best of the 3, I think he faces tougher competition in the near future with Vitor, Marquardt and maybe Maia if he ever gets his shot and takes it to the ground
GSP’s toughest test has come and gone with Alves and BJ’s walked through everyone put in front of him. BJ and GSP’s next contenders are people who don’t really deserve a shot I think
With that being said I just don’t see Anderson loosing anytime soon. Great poll though

by IrishKev on Jan 30, 2010 7:58 AM EST reply actions

yeah fights end quicker in the heavier weightclasses.

GSP is a control first fighter and plays it safe all the time, that’s why i hope it would be him.

GSP hasnt made any fight look easy, he barely even knows how to finish, he has no killer instinct. He couldnt even finish Kos who is just a wrestler with 2-3 years striking ability.

No champion on that list has EVER tapped while they were champion (other than GSP), thats what counts.

by Insain on Jan 30, 2010 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

OK. It only matters if they tap as champions. He isn’t making fights look easy because(unlike other Champs) he hasn’t had a fight outside the top 3 since he won the belt.

This space for rent. Wanna bet on the Diaz fight? 01/28/10

by jay. on Jan 30, 2010 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

Gotta agree with his logic

Doesn’t even matter that he took on Hughes twice and dominated him both times and got Hughes to tap the 2nd time, or that he thumped Serra to a pulp in their rematch. Then beat Fitch, who was tied for the UFC record (at the time) for consecutive wins, finished BJ and destroyed Alves, who’s pretty much the best striker at WW. Not to mention he did all this without being put in any trouble at all.
When he tapped to Hughes he wasn’t a champion yet. And when Serra beat him the fight was already stopped by the ref (think it was Herb), when he started tapping. So basically what I’m saying Insain, is your comment is BS cause GSP has never tapped as champion

by IrishKev on Jan 30, 2010 7:26 PM EST up reply actions

I think he tapped in his corner(even worse than tapping during combat) against GSP.

Also he has mentally tapped almost every time he moves up in weight.

Anderson would be a sensible pick because of the level of his opponent. Even though, he will go past Belfort and I don’t see no one beating Jesus Pierre or Penn at their respective divisions.

"Once Flamengo, Flamengo until die"

by Eduardo Cruz on Jan 30, 2010 11:46 AM EST reply actions

Great poll, tough to decide

In the end I picked GSP as I think that he’s the most likely to give up his belt, I doubt that anyone of them will be beaten for the title if Andy can get past Vitor as there aren’t any contenders that will test them in the UFC, even the best guys in each division have already been destroyed. Andy will probabaly retire after 3 fights and BJ could give up the belt after beating Edgar or stay at LW for some more fights but GSP has the most options, he could go up to MW or even leave MMA altogether to train for London 2012. I wouldn’t be surprised if he vacated the belt after beating Hardy, just like Frank did back in the day when he cleaned out LHW.

Out of the first champ overall to lose their title it’s a toss up between Machida and Brock, Lyoto has a very tough fight coming up against Shogun and he arguably should have lost the belt already whilst Brock has a lot of top guys to face and has just come back from a serious illness and may not be the same fighter he was before. Mir and Carwin will be good tests but he’s arguably going to be in more trouble against Big Nog and Cain as well as JDS.

I’d pick Brock over Machida but that’s only because I think that Lyoto will beat Shogun decisively this time and after Shogun there aren’t many top contenders left as Andy and Lil Nog won’t fight Lyoto while he’s already beaten Rashad and Thiago, Rampage isn’t motivated and no other LHWs would give him any trouble. As for Brock, after Mir/Carwin he’s going to have to fight Big Nog-Cain and I’d be surprised if he retains his belt both times and even if he does he won’t beat JDS. It’s funny that a HW division lacking the best HW in the world could end up being the most competetive division as the other champions, especially Andy, BJ and GSP, are unbeatable.

That belt is meaningless and never gets defended. The poll was about UFC champions anyway, not for legends with made-up titles. Fedor is the man, but right now is not the champion, like I said he would be if he was in the UFC but he’s not so it’s a moot point.

Very good poll question!

I do think AS will beat Vitor but I do believe he is facing the most dangerous opponent than GSP and BJ. Edgar will not get past the 2nd round and Hardy will probably look like Fitch by the 3rd round. Vitor has great speed and power with the ability to KO anybody in the sport, but AS is no slouch himself and can easily KO Vitor with one punch. So my final answer is, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, AS!

by MMACHAMP on Jan 31, 2010 4:07 AM EST reply actions

I picked Anderson Silva only because he is the one that I see losing interest first and getting caught (or just wanting to get out of the UFC). GSP is too much the consummate professional and BJ Penn has no competition in his weight class.

by theloupgaroukid on Jan 31, 2010 5:33 PM EST reply actions

Went with Anderson

Mainly because I think Vitor and Nate prove a tougher test than any of the next two opponents for GSP or BJ.

by domino effect on Jan 31, 2010 10:34 PM EST reply actions

Agreed, I chose Silva for the same reasons

Vitor and Nate are more of a threat to Anderson than anyone in GSP & BJ’s divisions. That said, I don’t think any of these guys are going to lose their belts anytime soon. What I would love to see is all of them moving up a division (BJ to WW, GSP to MW, and AS to LHW) and making a run at the respective titles.

by the rock on Feb 1, 2010 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

The answer isn't based on the Champion

but rather his competition. Andy has a tough fight with Vitor coming up and I think Nate could give him a tough time too. Fitch, Alves, and Koscheck have all went the distance with Gsp and could possible improve their game and possible beat him ( but I wouldn’t bet on it). Florian is clearly the 2nd best lw fighter in the ufc and is probably 3 wins away from a rematch with Penn, but it’s hard to see the fight going any differently. Sooo…..I had to go with Andy.

All these guys would be hard to dethrone

So I look at what fighter in their divisions that would have the best chance at winning. With BJ, GSP and Silvas fights all coming up I think Vitor has the best chance of pulling the upset. But overall I think the most realistic chance of any fighter being dethroned is GSP by Alves In silvas division I would say Marquardt and in Bj’s division Kflo. The most talented fighter in my mind out of Kflo, Alves and Marquardt is Alves hands down.
