Strikeforce weigh in results LIVE from Sunrise for 'Miami'

Cyborg_medium

The official weigh-in event for Strikeforce: "Miami" is in the books. The festivities took place TODAY (Jan. 29) at the Chairman's Club from the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.

Strikeforce: "Miami" features a main event between Nick Diaz and DREAM Welterweight Champion Marius Zaromskis for the promotion's vacant 170-pound world title. Female powerhouse Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos will put her 145-pound title on the line against Marloes Coenen in the co-featured fight of the night.

In addition, feared K-1 striker "Marvelous" Melvin Manhoef will make his Strikeforce debut opposite the power-punching "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler. And joining them on the main card is Herschel Walker vs. Greg Nagy and Bobby Lashley vs. Wes Sims.

Each of the ten main card fighters set to compete on the Showtime telecast hit their respective marks on their first attempt, including both main event welterweight title participants.

There were, however, a few minor issues with the under card fighters. Sabah Homasi, John Kelly and Hayder Hassan were each slightly heavy on their first tries, but in each case the fights were agreed to go forth by both fighters without penalty.

Here are the weigh in results for tomorrow's Strikeforce: "Miami" fight card:

265 lbs.: Bobby Lashley (252.25) vs. Wes Sims (258.25)
185 lbs.: Melvin Manhoef (185.75) vs. Robbie Lawler (185.75)
215 lbs.: Herschel Walker (214.25) vs. Greg Nagy (210.5)

Under card (May not be broadcast):

170 lbs.: Jay Hieron (170.25) vs. Joe Riggs (170.5)
155 lbs.: David Zitnick (154)  vs. Michael Byrnes (TBA*)
145 lbs.: Craig Oxley (144.75) vs. David Gomez (144.5)
170 lbs.: Sabah Homasi (171.5) vs. John Kelly (170.5)
145 lbs.: Pablo Alfonso (139.25) vs. Marcos Da Matta (139.75)
170 lbs.: Ryan Keenan (168) vs. Hayder Hassan (170.5)

170 lbs.: Joe Ray (TBA) vs. John Clarke (169.75)

*Needed to complete necessary paperwork. Weighing in at a later time.

Remember that MMAmania.com will provide LIVE blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of "Miami," beginning with the SHOWTIME telecast at 10 p.m. ET on Jan. 30. In addition, we will deliver up-to-the-minute quick results of all the under card action as it starts to flow around 7:30 p.m. ET.

i got Marius at 2.5 to 1 odds against a buddy so i took him all day long.

I think the reach is the biggest concern but I’m decently ok with marius’ ability to strike when Diaz shoots.

Marius has a good chance and I'm a fan but I'll never bet against Nick Diaz

If Nick doesn’t use his jits then he will lose, guaranteed. I’m just confident that Nick won’t be that daft because striking with Marius is suicidal.

Agreed

Scott Smith deserves his props; he’s made some seriously miraculous comebacks and he’s done it over and over again. He also comes off as a genuinly good guy; I’ve never heard of Smith bashing anyone and aside from maybe bashing him from a technical stand point never really heard of anyone with anything negative to say about Scott Smith. Possibly has got the biggest heart in MMA next to Wand/Nog.

Most of his fights could have been stopped. Charles McCarthy was stopped the first time he dropped holding his kidneys. Refs should be jumping in when he goes to the ground defenseless like that.

Hard to tell with him though

The Le and Benji Raddik fights both could’ve been stopped early but the guy comes back and punch’s these guys in the face and lays them out. Kinda like Bas says “Were you trying to punch him in the face?” “Yes.” “Then it wasn’t luck.”

by O damn he got caught on Jan 29, 2010 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

Oh, I didn't mean his punches are lucky

I mean the fact that he is still in most of the fights when he throws them. He’s gotten pretty lucky in almost all his fights. I guess that comes with having a pretty good pain threshold, which Scott obviously has.

I have nothing against him, just think he is getting too much credit for barely winning fights that he was getting killed in.

what was great with his win over Le was that he hit him right on the button after finally doing something technical, threw a feint for once and then nailed him. If he could only fight like that the whole time and realize that just throwing bombs the whole time isn’t gonna work without a set up

fresh like uhh.

Yeah, and when you’re swinging away with your golf club on the sixteenth and you hit a hole-in-one, you were aiming for the hole.

But guess what?

You still got lucky. If you can only pull something off one time out of a thousand attempts, you got lucky.

There IS such a thing as a lucky punch. Ask Matt Serra.*

*actually, don’t…. he’ll tell you it was pure unadulterated skill that planted his fist into the back of Georges’ head, even though GSP is a vastly superior boxer and Serra could never repeat the feat in a million years

Does that make him "The Man" though?

I think guys who dominate great fighters should be considered “the man”. Scott Smith is getting smashed by average fighters(at best) then making a comeback, not what I consider being “the man”.

He's a genuine Rocky story though;

Mainly I think he’s liked cause he proves time and time again that with persistence and heart a technically inferior fighter can still come out on top. I mean you could say “I love MMA but I’m never gonna try cause these guys have been training since they were 10 and it’s just too late to get into the game now.” Or you could look at the example of Scott Smith and say “What the hell? Lets just do this”. In that way I think he’s somewhat of an inspirational figure.

I always call people that I like "The Man" haha, I've overused "The Man" so much it's lost all meaning

Smith’s far from world class but I’m always entertained when I watch him fight and he always gives it everything that he has and you can never count him out. He’s also got some sick power in his hands.

Andy is the real “Man” but for having so much heart and toughness as well as for KO’g Dung he will always be one of my favourites. He will always have a place in my profile.

Forrest never knocked anyone out though..

And his only real “Rocky like” comeback was against Tito and he still lost that fight. Cung Le was the champ; one of their Marquee guys that they really got behind and marketed; I think it’s only fair that the guy that KO’d him gets the same treatment.

Talk about excessive moderating. Big Brother is watching you indeed.

Smith’s far from the best MW in the world but I like the guy anyway and he doesn’t run away or cry if he gets smashed like Forrest. I used to like Forrest as well until he started acting like a child when he lost and thought of himself as a star and above “no-names like Lil Nog”. Can’t wait for another Black House star to smash Forrest again.

Sims should provide some laughs before the fight and he’s guaranteed to piss off Lashley.

As for Walker I honestly couldn’t care less but at least I’m going to get to see Hieron-Riggs on EA.com for free so I can’t complain. I don’t rate him or his martial art at all so I’m picking his opponent by default.

He'll probably win this one

But against a real name opponent; I don’t think so. He’s 6’1 221 lbs, this guys too small for HW, he’s about the size of Couture if those stats are accurate.

Watched a video of his opponent in the fan posts and he looked small in comparison to Walker,

Walker looks like a beast, and I hope he puts on a show. Walker’s first fight but your the other guy is relatively in-experienced also so fair enough fight in my eyes, not a mis-match or anything. He was saying he had some muay thai experience but the game plan was probably to take Walker down, but I say someone is getting KO’d.

I had a feeling...

That they’d move a 205er up to HW for Walker’s debut. He’s not some huge physical specimen like Brock/Lashley though so it’s not unfair at all in light of his experience level. I just don’t expect a whole lot from Walker beyond this level of competition.

Who i want to win and who do i think i will

I don’t see how Mariuz is the overwhelming underdog maybe, theres too many casual North American fans who pushed the line. Is Diaz a tough, hardnosed scrappy kid..yes without a doubt but, is he as dynamic no. Mariuz has to have a strong base as he has tree trunks for legs so i assume they won’t get wobbly for a takedown allowing Diaz to utilize his BJJ. Nick Diaz has proved alot of doubters wrong with his wins over Lawler and Gomi (stoned or nt). Those kind of wins have not happened in a longtime. Mariuz is on a roll and the whitemare i believe will win this fight because, Diaz will wanna test striking and get caught.

Winner: Whitemare by KO

Manhoef vs. Lawler will be a test of strength and KO power and thats it. There maybe a takedown but, i don’t see either dominating but, Melvin is a bigger boy and may unleash his assault. Lawler is very consitent and may have the edge.

Winner: Robbie LawlerTKO

I'm surprised by everyone overlooking Whitemare as well

He’ll be a damn good test for Diaz tonight and the only reason I picked against him was because I expect Nick to use his BJJ, if he tries to strike then he’ll get destroyed.

Simms weighed in 6lbs heavier that lashley. I’d love to see a pic of that. Must be fat. He had about 1 week to train.. My guess is he will be gased after 30 seconds. Lashley better make this look easy or I’m hoping off this wagon.
