UFC rankings/MMA rankings featured in USA Today for January 2010
Our partners in crime over at BloodyElbow.com have once again published their divisional rankings for mixed martial arts in the nation’s largest daily newspaper, USA Today, for the month of January 2010.
For those of you unfamiliar with the process, here’s how it works:
"The rankings, which will offer a definitive perspective of top MMA fighters across all weight-classes, will be released monthly and published in the Sports section of USA TODAY, online at USATODAY.com and on SB Nation’s MMA commentary and community blog, BloodyElbow.com … The USA TODAY/SB Nation Consensus MMA Rankings are compiled each month by Nate Wilcox and Richard Wade of BloodyElbow.com. The rankings utilize each of the top MMA rankings from multiple unique sources. A weighted-formula is applied to normalize and distill the various rankings into one consensus ranking per weight class."
To check out the latest USAT/SBN rankings click here. We’ve also listed their top 10 in each class after the jump for your convenience.

Can't please everybody.
No matter who makes the ranking, it won’t be universally accepted. I have a couple issues with the list but I don’t think anything is overly outlandish.

rogers at 7? sonnon over belfort? aoki #2?
rogers shouldn’t be in the top 15, sonnon is a dbag and aoki would go 0-3 against ufc lws

ooh, get outta here man. Gonzaga had any more credibility than Arlovski? right. Rogers is 10-1 because he fought Fedor the best.
you don’t pop up automatically in the rankings just cause u are in the UFC.

at the time gonzaga did have more credibility than arlovski
its like praysing danny green for beating roy jones. arlovski has had his day and got cut from the ufc and has had to 1st round knockouts in his past fights.

AA is one of the most technical strikers in the division, it is only his chin that leaves him down...
I know that this is the most important part of the game, being able to take it aswell as give it out but imo AA is an awesome fighter. He was working Fedor over also till he got KTFO.

Problem is if you watch Fedor when he fights he keeps everything nice and tight. His chin isn’t sticking out just begging to be knocked off. And working Fedor? LOL How many power shots did he land? An experienced fighter like Fedor feels out his opponent. Waits till he gets his timing down and when they slip he capitalizes

So to bring up different stances and guard has nothing to do with what I was talking about. offensively yes.
but boxing has two sides, and the other is defence. He leaves himself open to these shots that’s why he’s getting KO’d, he needs to move his head and tuck his chin down better. If he had the defensive skill of Rampage he’d be much more dangerous
fresh like uhh.
Exactly. Setting up your punches help too. And if you miss they are already off balance and that makes it much harder to land counter.

that always happens
Its based on your accomplishments at the weight class and time given. Anderson would pass to 3rd or 4th after another win at LHW. But with just wins over Irvin and Forrest he stays put. Its dumb at first glance but it makes sense. Even though we all think he would run through the LHW division (he would), we do have to see more for him to rank higher.

But he should def be ahead of Forrest!!!
It’s a fn joke that Forrest is ranked that high in general!
Forrest is ranked way too high
Andy should either be near the top or not in the rankings at all, it just looks silly having him at 9 especially when Forrest is at 6. Gegard is ranked high because of his accomplishments at other weights, as his only wins at LHW are over Babalu and Soko and as good as Gegard is wins over those 2 doesn’t make you top 5 if you ignore his wins at MW and HW. Andy should have his MW success taken into account as well or just be ranked in his actual division.

Maia has the greatest jitz...
…of literally anybody in MMA. if it goes to the ground, not only is the fight over, but Maia will make it look easy. yes, his standup has holes big enough to drive a truck through, but if you think he doesn’t deserve top 10 consideration, you’re spending too much time with the wacky tabacky and not enough time understanding jiu-jitsu. just my opinion.
the biggest problem i have with this list is how they ranked A.Silva in the LHW category. his win over F.Griffin was a thing of beauty. He embarrassed the former champ. it wasn’t even hard for Silva. cakewalk. if that’s not enough to be ranked AT LEAST #3, i don’t know what is. and here, those quacks at USA Today rank him 3 spots lower than Griffin? Bloody Elbow does not rank anyone...
Based on the premise that all MMA rankings are subjective but that it’s still useful and informative to know who the online MMA community as a whole ranks as the best fighters in MMA, we collect and average the rankings of the top MMA websites to produce our consensus rankings.
We compile the top MMA rankings from each of our sources and award 25 points for a first place ranking, 16 for a 10th place ranking, 1 for a 25th place ranking. A formula is used to "normalize" the data so all fighters are awarded points from those lists that do not include a full 25 fighters. This formula ensures that each ranking site awards the same number of total points regardless of how many fighters they choose to rank. Each fighter’s total is divided by the number of possible points to determine their standing in the Consensus Rankings.

You guys
Consensus rankings are rankings averaged from 15+ sites thats why they are called CONSENSUS rankings. Anderson Silva does not get ranked by some sites at LHW and therefore his consensus ranking drops. Guaranteed most sites will have him in the top five if they rank him at all in the LHW div.

Once again Chuck is hard to rank in the consensus because some of these sites don't have him ranked
Because he was retired. Remember this is an average of all the sites combined hense the consensus rankings. If sites don’t have him ranked because he was retired his consensus is going to drop.

Overall, I agree with this list
There’s no such thing as a perfect list, so obviously there area always gonna be complaints. But from some of the sad lists I’ve seen before, this one is pretty accurate. The only changes I’d make:
Brett Rogers shouldn’t be up there.
Anderson Silva should be higher at LHW.
Chael Sonnen is too high on the list.
Diego Sanchez should be higher.

Who gives a shit at the end of the day, anything can happen in a fight....
Rankings Smankings……I for one have more important things to worry about!! All this is peoples opinions anyway, anything could happen in an MMA fight and there is only about a dozen or so (current) fighters who are considerably better than the average MMArtist, AS, GSP, BROC, FEDOR, BJ to name a few. These guys set the benchmark imo and People who actually watch the fights and know what a fighter has done and is capable of know that rankings don’t mean shit, again this is just imo. I never give a shit about rankings to be honest, how do people not know that there could be some guy working down a coal mine, or on a farm in the middle of nowhere with retard strenght and the means to beat any Fedor or Broc with a single touch. I just don’t buy into this ‘Best in the World’ or p#p best eva, just cause it says it on a piece of paper. Maybe this is just me waffling a bit, having a bad bad day and just wanted to bitch about something.

Everyone trying to butter each other up and afraid to debate, it's easier to just rec and move on.
I only rec’d one post ever, Spinning Fat Kicks I think. A post about Fedor if I remember right.

I wonder what the rankings would be after this fight.....

god only knows with Mazz at the wheel...somehow Mir would still win
Fedor was originally cast as the main character in 24, but was replaced by the producers when he managed to kill every terrorist and save the day in 12 minutes and 37 seconds
LOL
Mac that might be my fav post of yours.

no way rashad should be higher than rampage the only people he’s beaten were a washed up chuck liddell and forrest griffin (who sucks and is overrated). Jon Fitch at #2 shows how weak the welterweight division is, it’s time for GSP to move to middleweight and fight Anderson Silva

They will never get it right....
Griffin being there is INSANE.
Rogers being even ranked top 10 is nuts.
I don’t think Akiyama should even be ranked…
Aoki being #2 is also laughable. I would pay almost anything to see Penn demolish him.

who would you put up there instead of Rogers
Forrest by all means deserves to be there, but Andy should be higher. The guy continually fights top comp. give him a break, he belongs there and theres nor reason he shouldnt be on the to 10 list
Fedor played Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun and won.
AMERICA.....FUCK YEAH

Moussasi #3
i dont see rashad or rampage beating this gegard. I also see machida and shogun both having a hard time against this guy. Dana white has never once said anything negative about Gegard. He has been trying to get him as much as he wants fedor. I am stoked to see gegard vs. king mo. that will be a rediculous fight!
by Javster on Jan 28, 2010 12:49 PM EST reply actions 1 recs
Rankings have to be based on achievements not potential
Gegard is world class and will be a top p4p fighter when he hits his prime, but wins over Babalu and Soko aren’t enough for him to leapfrog 2 former LHW champions in Rampage and Rashad. I’d love to see Gegard in the UFC and there’s a good chance of him beating Rashad and Rampage but he needs to beat a world class opponent at LHW before he can be considered as being top 3 in the world, as having the potential to be the best isn’t enough.

What do the percentages mean?
If you go to the usa today website they list % before promotion. What does that mean?
How the hell is Forrest Griffin in the top ten. He should be fighting Houston Alexander in a barn in Iowa.

This is garbage
I got as far as seeing Ray Mercer ranked #20 and I didn’t even bother reading the rest.
What kind of jackass would put Ray Merver in their MMA rankings, much less their top 20?

by TFK on Jan 28, 2010 1:36 PM EST reply actions 1 recs
That's a joke, Mercer isn't even a MMAst and can't get licensed to fight
That shows why most rankings are a waste of time.

NOTE: What the hell is Ray Mercer doing in the rankings?!?!
For those of you who are not familiar with how we do the consensus rankings: we do not add any subjective opinion to the rankings. Instead they are a compilation and averaging of the top 20 or so most credible and popular online ranking sites. The goal is not to create an subjective ranking of who is the best fighter but rather to objectively document which fighters are considered to be the best by the online community.
Ray Mercer sneaks into our top 25 because he is ranked at #13 by FightMatrix.com a computer-based objective rankings system. They assign points to fighters strictly based on the rankings of the opponents those fighters have beaten. When Ray Mercer beat Tim Sylvia, Sylvia was ranked in the top 13. By FightMatrix’ protocols that caused Mercer to leapfrog above Sylvia even as Sylvia dropped.
Because most of our ranking sites stop at the top 10, those sites that rank the full top 25 have an outsized influence on the lower end of our rankings, ergo Mercer sneaks into our top 25. It doesn’t mean we think he’s the 25th best heavyweight in the world, it means that he beat a highly regarded fighter in Tim Sylvia and that caused some fairly influential members of the MMA community to consider him a top heavyweight.

Griffin and Rogers = Has beens!
Forrest Griffin does not belong in the top 10. Wow he barely beat Tito. He got destroyed by Rashad and Jardine(Another nobody). All he’s got going for him is winning TUF.
Lil Nog is going to destroy Griffin…Mark my words people.
Brett Rogers is another one who doesnt belong. Alistair is the Champ in SF and he is ranked 10th lower than Roger…That bull. Rogers is a nobody. Arlovski should be 10, Overeem 7th and Rogers nothing. Period.
by ALROCKS on Jan 28, 2010 2:28 PM EST reply actions 1 recs
Grim beat AA
Arlovski hasn’t fought since, that’s why he’s not ranked. Grim also gave Fedor a tough fight and right now is facing better opposition than Overreem, which is why he’s above him. If Carwin is considered a top 10 fighter then a guy with a similar record and one big win should be as well, especially after he gave Fedor so many problems.
How is he a has been anyway? He’s a novice to the sport, a has been is someone who was good but is past their best not a prospect who hasn’t hit their prime yet.

Holy hell, this list made me realize
Just how awful mma is right now. When it’s as pathetic as middle weight or welterweight they should just cut off the list. For real, for Robbie Lawler or Martin Kampmann to be on there is just embarassing to the sport. And what’s with all the people ahead of Frankie Edgar?? I definitely don’t think anyone other than Penn and MAYBE florian should be ahead of him, his last couple of fights have been really really impressive. Gray Maynard’s last fight just showed that he’s a stupid wrestler that likes to think he can strike.. So they put him at #5?? Naw man, nawwww…..
by BlaiseBlaise on Jan 28, 2010 2:39 PM EST reply actions 1 recs
Everybody has there own rankings
As far as how awful MMA is right now I don’t understand how you can say how awfull either of those guys are back in the day they would of been top challengers against Hughes and Franklin?
"He broke tim sylvia’s arm…...So what?" – Brock Lesnar
Ranking don’t mean anything anyway…. you got a #6 lightweight in the world going for a title. A number 5 WW, a number 6 MW and a #8 HW. And really out of those who really deserves to be #1 contender for the title? And the only reason Shogun is #2 is because his fight with Machida was so close. I would assume he wasn’t even top 5 when they first fought
Don't think feel
obviously...
that’s a pretty big “only reason” to be moved up to #2 in the rankings. What did you expect? Shogun to give Machida the fight of his life and then not move up the rankings?

ahead of Bisping? no way. Akiyama who Belcher tooled thats a insult
4. Demian Maia
5. Chael Sonnen
7. Jake Shields
8. Yushin Okami
9. Yoshihiro Akiyama
10. Robbie Lawler
WANDY RIP Bispings going to toy with you then destroy you
Belcher didn't tool him at all
He put Sexyama in danger but he got taken down and dropped a couple of times, forget the biased commentary and you’ll see for yourself that there was nothing wrong with that decision at all.
