Report: Forrest Griffin vs Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in the works for UFC 113

Griffin-nog_medium
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin (17-6) will try to derail the title aspirations of PRIDE import Antonio Rogerio Nogueria (18-3) when the two reportedly meet at the upcoming UFC 113 event from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on May 1, according to Tatame.com.

From Lil' Nog:

"It’s almost set, we’re negotiating, but it’s not 100% yet. It’s not confirmed by the UFC yet."

Griffin rebounded from an embarrassing knockout loss at the hands of Anderson Silva to avenge a 2006 defeat to Tito Ortiz, outpointing "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" en route to a split decision victory in the main event of UFC 106 last November.

The win snapped a two-fight losing streak that began when he coughed up the 205-pound strap to Rashad Evans at UFC 92 in December 2008. A big win over the fast-rising "Minotoro" could have him right back in the light heavyweight title hunt.

Star-divide

On the flip side, the twin brother of UFC heavyweight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira punched a one-way ticket on the train to title contention with a first round ass-kicking of Luis Arthur Cane at UFC 106 in November 2009.

The victory over "Banha" was the sixth straight for the former Brazilian boxer, who also convincingly finished five of those six contests. Stopping Griffin could put him one fight away from a shot at the 205-pound title.

UFC 113 features the much-anticipated rematch between 205-pound division champion, Lyoto Machida, defending his belt against fellow Brazilian Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in the main event of the evening while Josh Koscheck and Paul Daley duke it out for the next crack at 170-pound gold.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on this still-developing fight card.

Just having fun, like you were with your comment, don’t be so sensitive. Go Longhorns.

My buddy and I are deciding between UFC 111 and 113. With this announcement it has become pretty tough. Coming from Toronto, we’d be going to Atlantic City for 2 nights then Jersey. Or to Montreal for the weekend (which I have been to many times). How much of a dump is Atlantic City?

Ya huge stereotypes. I live in Toronto and we’ve had snow maybe three times this year. Bought golf clubs in South Carolina and the guy asked why I need them when I live in Canada. He was serious…….lol

I feel you guys.

When I first moved to Oklahoma from Omaha I had to defend Nebraska as not being inbred hicks. I had to do the same thing when I moved back to Nebraska from Oklahoma! The S and the SW gets a bad rap but ironically it is way more diverse than PNW or NE who like to talk about diversity and such.

Anyway, on topic, I am really looking forward to this fight. Lil Nog is trying to prove himself and I think Forrest will come back strong as the Forrest who beat Rampage and Shogun.

Do not. I repeat, do not, go to mma-core.com. I made the mistake of watching a couple UFC 108 bouts on there and I am still trying to get all the viruses of my computer. Ridiculous! You've been warned.

You damn right

Forrest you can’t keep running anymore. There isn’t a single fight out there left where he won’t get smashed. lil Nog is gonna smash him horribly so would my boy T, or Luiz Cane, Jon Jones, Chida, Shogun,… literally anyone worth a damn in at LHW. His overratedness will be on clear display for all TUFers who thought he was a legit champ to see.

by NNR (formerly NameNotRequired) on Jan 26, 2010 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

Forrest isn't running

He’s fought Silva, Chuck, Page,Shad and Shogun and now Lil Nog. If anything he’s been fighting guys far above his skill set.

by jay. on Jan 26, 2010 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed but his "I only fight big names" comment on MMA Live made him sound like an arrogant fight ducker

He’s scared to fight the dangerous up and comers, he didn’t want anything to do with Machida at UFC 70 back when he was “boring” because he knew that he’d lose and has admitted that he’s scared of getting smashed by the likes of Lil Nog and Bones Jones because he knows that they’d expose him. Anyone who’s scared to fight a talented lesser name in case they lose has the wrong attitude and I’m glad that he’s going to have to fight a true veteran and top 5 LHW in Lil Nog, name or not.

by David W-S on Jan 26, 2010 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

that would be my guess

But Griffin seems to only win he shouldn’t with the exception of Silva of course. By all counts and measures Lil nog should have this in the bag but I am not completely counting Forrest out of this fight.

by PSYQO78 on Jan 26, 2010 2:18 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I am countin Forrest out!

There is NO chance that Forrest can win this! If I had any money left in my betus account it would all go on Rogerio, wouldn’t care what the odds were either! AGAIN: FORREST HAS NO CHANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by MBOW on Jan 26, 2010 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

You're right about Forrest winning when he's a big underdog

But when he beat Shogun, Shogun was out of shape and it was his first fight in the cage. Shogun vs Forrest 2 needs to happen.

by MMACHAMP on Jan 26, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

Shogun would MURDER him this time around!

by MBOW on Jan 26, 2010 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

no doubt

The sad thing is that Forrest doesn’t even have a “punchers” chance due to his inability to even bruise anyone not named Stephan Bonnar. But he is a hard worker and he’s definitely there to fight.

by PSYQO78 on Jan 26, 2010 2:43 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Don't get me wrong

I like Forrest because he is a hard worker, but I don’t think he is an elite fighter.

by MMACHAMP on Jan 26, 2010 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

If being a "hard worker" or "having heart"

is your best gift than you suck! Meaning that you jits, wrestling, boxing, etc… are’nt better than you heart. Back in the day it was enough, but the talent is just too much these days. Forrest and Bonnar will never get that belt. Yea yea Forrest held it, but don’t get me started as to how he got there.

by MBOW on Jan 26, 2010 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

you* your 2x Damn, now I’m retarded! Been down here too long!

by MBOW on Jan 26, 2010 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

Word!!!!

Fighting is technical – heart, hard worker , pushing the pace and all these trivial sayings don’t mean shit compared to skill.

by NNR (formerly NameNotRequired) on Jan 26, 2010 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

Skill like choking out Shogun?

Or chopping Rampage down like a tree? Even if you buy in to your own excuses regarding Shogun’s cardio or his injury he still should have way more skill than Griffin and therefore not get his @$$ choked out. I see what you guys are saying regarding heart not being a substitute for skill but you are underestimating his skill. How else could he have the record he has in one of the top divisions in the best organization in the world?

Do not. I repeat, do not, go to mma-core.com. I made the mistake of watching a couple UFC 108 bouts on there and I am still trying to get all the viruses of my computer. Ridiculous! You've been warned.

by fenderacoustic (formerly wAyNe) on Jan 26, 2010 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed, wayne. I don't get the hate for Griffin. He fights guys way more talented than him. He is a true warrior at heart.

There aren't any other LHW contenders available for Lil Nog to face

Rashad and Thiago have just fought each other, Machida and Shogun are set to rematch, Andy is back at 185 to face Vitor, Couture-Coleman, Jardine-Bader and Bones-Vera have have been signed as has Chuck and Tito. Hamill hasn’t recovered from the beatdown that Jones gave him and would be a huge step down from Cane anyway. The only other name/ranked LHW is Franklin and he’s had his last 2 fights at 195 plus he’s not ready to return yet after having a busy 08 and 09. Forrest was the only option that made sense at this point, all of the other LHWs have just fought, are set to fight or are injured.

Just because you hate Black House and Soares doesn’t make this a bad fight, the only reason that it’s a mismatch is that Forrest is overrated and Lil Nog is one of the best in the world, once he smashes Forrest he’ll be set to take on bigger fights against better opposition.
