Gabriel Gonzaga: I want to prove I'm a better striker than Junior dos Santos
Props: Fighter's Only
Quoteworthy:
"I don’t think this fight will hit the ground, I believe I am a better striker and I want to prove that, I am not afraid to stand and strike with anyone. If the fight goes to the ground it is my place anyway. I am always going to be prepared to fight anyone and Junior is in my way to get back to title contention. I think I am very mature at this moment and I am in the top of my game I will be very well prepared for this fight. Of course, I will have that belt one day, you can mark it, I train a lot for this and I believe that will be sooner than later."
Former UFC heavyweight number one contender Gabriel Gonzaga meets fellow countryman Junior dos Santos at UFC on Versus 1 "Vera vs. Jones" from the Odeum Colorado in Broomfield on March 21. Despite "Cigano's" impressive wins, "Napao" isn’t worried and promises to prove who strikes better. Is Gonzaga good enough on his feet to win this fight? Have your say, Maniacs.

I think this is quite possibly the worst game plan I've seen this year.
Why stand with JDS? Just get it to the ground where you have an advantage. Plus, I want to see what kind of Jitz game JDS has.

Mind Games?
Does anyone think that he’s playing mind games and really has the game plan of taking JDS down at the first opportunity? especially if JDS thinks GG is just gonna stand and bang. Can’t think of any other reason for these comments, surely he doesn’t really believe he’s the better striker.
I really hope so
Cause JDS is gonna re-arrange his jaw otherwise. Agree with Cole, we need to see Junior’s Jits and ground game before he gets a title shot
I was really looking forward to this fight for that reason but if GG just walks into Junior’s fists it’s gonna be a predictable and short fight
He’s gonna try to take Junior down first oppurtunity he gets for sure. I’m not sure he’ll be able to, what i am sure of is that Junior is gonna get his hand raised after a KO/TKO.
fresh like uhh.
after this fight
and after Nog beats Cain, I would like to see Cain vs Gabe.

Oh definitely...
… I can see Gonzaga shooting in for the takedown right away. If I were Gonzaga, especially with his ground game, I’d take the fight to the ground over and over, try to tire JDS out. Think GSP vs. Penn.

Gonzaga isn't the fittest HW
He gassed against Werdum and Couture, OK that was years ago but still. While Junior looked fresh while hammering Cro Cop for 3 non stop
I know what you are saying with the take downs tiring Junior, especially if GG lands on top but if those TDs fail, GG gets gassed quicker and Junior runs through him
I like Gabe
I think he is a good striker WITH a lot of power. He had Carwin rocked man and jsut went for the kill to early. Randy facked him up but that was a good fight.
I'm really excited for this fight
I’m picking JDS, either way I can’t wait.

Well let's see....
Cro Cops striking >>> Gonzaga’s striking
Yvel’s striking >>> Gonzaga’s striking
If I were GG I would at least make an attempt to take it to the area where I probably have the greatest advantage. GG is no slouch on the feet, but I don’t think he’s on JDS’ level either.

I dont know
Gonzaga ko’d crocop in the first when they fought . I think yvel vs gonzaga would be a alot closer of a fight. Im picking jds but first round ko.
JDS FTW
Especially if he keeps it standing; but I said that about his fight with Cro Cop too. He’s got the power to put JDS away, it’s kind of an X factor. One thing that’s for sure though is if he starts losing and getting beat up he’ll break. Gonzaga isn’t really known for his heart.

Gabe.. Gabe.. Gabe...
Your only chance is to take this to the floor…
Dos Santos will murder you on the feet.. He has by far the best boxing of any HW in MMA.. He is so fast and powerful. He cuts really good angles and uses really dynamic footwork to create angles from..

Keith Jardine is now known as "The Dean of Antihistamine" because he is always sleeping early in fights..
GG has gotten whipped badly by every legitimate contender he’s fought. And Cro Cop never looked good in the octagon, so don’t try that argument. Trying to stand and bang with JDS better some sort of ploy, because JDS will put his head into the seats.
The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful
Agreed
Gabe has all of the physical tools to be a dominant HW but he doesn’t have the heart or cardio to beat the best, if he’s losing a fight then he just gives up. Wanting to strike with JDS is suicidal, especially when you’re a BJJ black belt. If Gabe does that then this will be another quick KO win for JDS. Hopefully Junior will get the credit that he deserves once he goes 5-0 with 5 KOs and is in line for a title shot.

this one gets one of the awards of the nights for sure. i could see it being any of the three.
i actually think gabe has a good chance of winning this fight.
JDS is definitley better at stand up
But he won’t be a slouch off his back considering he trains with Nog….Don’t see how Gabe takes this

Usually if Cro Cop is in a highlight reel ko, he is the man left standing!
Tito Ortiz: I think Chuck's lost a step, maybe i've lost a step also, but that's what makes the fight so exciting!
i was hoping for mind games when Hazelett said he wasn’t afraid of Daley. seeing that crushing hand that Carwin threw….god I hope Gonzaga doesn’t try this. i want to get some underdog money off of Gonzaga hoping he gets it to the mat. sigh

It's mind-games, he is just setting the trap for JDS, once the bell goes........

Gabe
He’s been out of action too long for me, and isn’t consistent enough for me to continue to like him as much as I used to.
I wanted Yvel to win as well, so I’m kinda impartial to both fighters, rather just happy with the fact it’ll be very entertaining, guaranteed.

It's a ruse, nothing more...
… he’ll take the fight to the ground. I bet you JDS has been training ground game a LOT in prep for this fight.

loolololollololooloolololololol!
Better striker lololololol, dude get over KOing CroCop with a head kick, that was so long ago. JDS is going to roll you up man. Take it to the ground were you belong and maybe you have a chance, keep it standing to try and prove a point and you are sleeping!!!
Expect fireworks in this fight!
i like Gonzagas stlye! He has sick ass KO power & world class BJJ! i dont think he is guna win but i wont be that suprised if he duz. His fights are always exciting!
Gonzaga is a striker these days
Crocoping Crocop might have been the worst thing ever happen to Gonzaga. I dont even remember the last time I saw Gonzaga working on the ground. I dont believe this is a ploy at all. Gonzaga is going to stand with JDS and get hurt badly. If he survives the first couple of exchanges maybe his gameplan changes, but I am confident he is going to stand with JDS.
He's not shown that good BJJ in his latest fights anyway
He was easily outgrappled by Randy and Werdum and offered nothing off his back whilst he couldn’t keep a rocked Carwin on his back. Gabe has been overrated ever since the Cro Cop win and now that he fancies himself as a striker he’s going to continue coming into fights with dumb gameplans. He looks like a monster against cans but against top opposition he is found out time and time again, the same thing will happen against JDS.
