Clay Guida vs Shannon Gugerty set for UFC on Versus preliminary card

Guida_gugerty_medium
Just weeks after winning "Fight of the Year" at the 2009 World MMA Awards, Clay Guida (25-11) has been relegated to the preliminary card in his next fight against Shannon Gugerty (12-4) at the upcoming UFC on Versus 1 event from the Odeum Colorado in Broomfield on March 21.

Gugerty has replaced Guida's original opponent, Sean Sherk, after "The Muscle Shark" was forced to withdraw due to injury.

"The Carpenter," who has become one of the UFC's more popular fighters because of his relentless attack and never-say-die attitude, was finished via rear naked choke in a dominant performance from perennial lightweight contender Kenny Florian at UFC 107 in December of last year.

It was the second straight loss for the the former deep sea fisherman, who needs to get back into the win column before his career ends up going overboard.

Star-divide

Standing in his way is the venerable Shannon Gugerty. The City Boxing product has seen the Octagon four times since his debut at UFC Fight Night 14 in July 2008. All four contests have ended by way of submission -- with Gugerty on the receiving end for two out of the four finishes.

The California native needs a couple of big wins to work his way into the very crowded 155-pound division -- and finishing Clay Guida would be a damn good start.

UFC on Versus 1 is set to feature a ridiculous main event between dynamic light heavyweight strikers Brandon "The Truth" Vera and Jon "Bones" Jones. Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, John "Doomsday" Howard, Spencer "The King" Fisher and others are also expected to be in action on what is shaping up to be a great card for the promotion's debut on the Versus network.

Clay will probably win this one

but he just doesn’t come through against the top guys when it really counts. This last run of his was really the closest he’s ever been to getting a shot at the title; but I don’t see it happening again. Needs to come up with a better strategy than the dry humping method.

Undercard

Good. Unless Gugerty somehow subs him

Still on the Guida wagon.

Hope he comes out with a finish.

His striking won't finish Shannon

I’ll be hoping for a sub when he hits the take down. Maybe some g’n’p will leave an opening, either sub wise or cut wise

Guida should not be reduced to the undercard

Considering how lame some of the named fighter fights are these days at least we can count
on Guida to entertain.

If Huggie can’t finish this spare part then he has no business in the UFC. He’s had four fights against guys that could legitimately be considered top 10 LWs at the time he fought them (Sanchez, Florian, T. Griffin and Huerta), maybe five if you count Diaz. He is 1-3 or 2-3, depending on Diaz. He will never be more than on the fringes of the top 10. Guida has to either finish Shannon “Curtain-Jerker” Gugerty or go start beating up undersized Japanese guys.

You’re right, I gave him too much credit. I looked at his opponent line-up on the Sherdog site and misread his win over Aurelio as a win over Tyson. To amend my previous point, he is 1-4 at best against top-10 opponents. If he can’t finish Gugery Gugerty Goo All Right then he needs to find a new line of work or go to Japan and beat up guys who are unfamiliar with the concept of weight cutting.

Meh...

I was hoping for Etim or Miller here

by domino effect on Jan 26, 2010 11:15 AM EST reply actions

That would have made more sense

Especially Etim, he beat Gugerty easily at 105 yet he’s stuck facing the unranked Dos Anjos whilst Shannon is getting a fight with a big name. Guida-Etim would be a lot more competetive and entertaining than either of those 2 fights, instead we’re stuck with Terry facing substandard opposition once again and Guida facing a guy that he can hug for 15 minutes. Poor matchmaking in my opinion, in terms of both rankings and entertainment.

Guida by boring UD, Gugerty gets cut after this fight.

I for one am a fan of Guida

No he’s not the best fighter, but he’s one of the most passionate, he’s an animal, with total disregard for his own safety. they should make a damn movie about this guy!!! he lives in a caravan dammit, just so he can travel around and train all over the place!!!!
