UFC Quick Quote: Georges St. Pierre asks Gegard Mousasi to help him prepare for Dan Hardy

Mousasi_shadowboxing_medium

“I am nervous being away from my family and friends for two weeks and I don’t think of it like Georges is calling me for help. I think he is a great athlete that wants to train with different fighters to improve himself.... To be honest, I’m curious about everything, curious how he does things and if I have to say something specific that would be how he puts everything together to be able to take down opponents with ease.... I always train for my fights in Holland. This is just a learning experience. I don’t have a fight right now, so I’m trying to learn how they fight, how they train, how they do stuff. I will take what I learn and try to do it in Holland, but I don’t prepare for fights in other gyms. I always try to prepare for my fights in Holland.”

-- Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Gegard Mousasi talks to Sherdog.com about training for the first time ever in the United States alongside UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre. "Rush" apparently reached out to "Dream Catcher" while he was stateside, asking him if he could help get him ready for his showdown with Dan Hardy at UFC 111 on March 27. Mousasi accepted, viewing it as an opportunity to improve his own game and learn from one of the best in the business. St. Pierre is among the top wrestlers in the sport, which can't hurt when Mousasi likely collides with "King" Mo Lawal later on this year, right?

haters....

GSP could probly train only wrestling for the next 5 years and he still won’t achieve Mo’s caliber. As far as him fighting Mo, it sucks because Mo still has a lot of things to work on but strikeforce’s barren wasteland of a LHW division is forcing this fight. Another great prospect thrown way in over his head.

It’s cool though Mousasi training at different places. So far he’s been able to do so much just training with some guy name abdullah and a couple days with Fedor. If he actually started training exclusively with high caliber fighters – the man could be the next fedor.

This goes along with what Miguel Torres was saying

You can’t train with the same training partners for every single fight…you become complacent and you being to learn how each partner fights and reacts. It’s good to bring in fresh faces with different skill sets so it helps your mental game as well dealing with different types of fighters and trying to figure them out in the cage. Only good things can come from GSP and Moussasi training together for both fighters.

This is why GSP and Gegard are championship caliber fighters

They are constantly looking to improve by training with the best fighters in the world. Doesn’t look good for Hardy or Mo if these 2 are still hungry to improve their skills and become the best, I’m looking forward to seeing what new tricks GSP and Gegard learn from each other.

i try to never pick at the threads

But…

The thread caption leads me to believe this will be about GSP and how he is looking to expand and continue learning, even though its a quote from Gegard. I wanted to talk about GSP and his ability to see talent in guys like Gegard and bring them in because he never stops growing it seems. And the fact that the GSP camp can’t seem to produce guys that can keep up to him in training which is incredible given the camp talent they have at their disposal.

Yet, the thread ends by asking about the Mo/Gegard fight even though the next newest thread is about that as well.

Think I’m just being ‘that guy’ but oh well.

says a lot about GSp that he’s gotta bring in a guy like Mousasi to get some real work in @ the gym. seriously.

Love it

Love both these fighters! Was thrilled to read this and find out they are training together! True professionals! GSP is one scary mother, and only getting scarier. After he kills Hardy and claims yet another victim, he should be known as the Grim Reaper!

Teaching Mousasi how to lay on an opponent for five rounds and how to grease yourself to nullify somebodies gaurd.

GSP is an amazing fighter, and the most complete mixed martial artist in the game today. But let’s see how he does when he moves out of his natural weight class. BJ may have lost to him twice, but he did it fighting against a very big WW and the best of all time at that.

If GSP ever moves up he won’t be able to manhandle guys like he does at WW. And fighting AS would be a mistake because he will get KO’d. I have nothing but respect for GSP. He is a class act and one of the best in the game. BJ made his bed by talking trash leading up to the fight, but give him credit for going after it. He could stay in the LW division and dominate for years. No one is even close to him there. Instead he is looking to go back up and challege GSP again after the beating he took last time.

I’m not saying BJ will beat him, but if they fight again I think it will be much more competitive. BJ should have to beat one solid WW and then either Alves or Fitch to get the shot, IMO. Maybe they will give him Hughes as a first fight, but I would prefer to see him fight Kos first. A couple fights at WW will have BJ more acclimatized at the weight class before he takes on GSP, which should help a little.

It would take the performance of Penn’s career to beat GSP, because if ever there was a guy that was BJ Penn’s kryptonite it would be him. But I would never put it past Penn.

BJ gets trashed a lot for various reasons but very few guys have the guts and self-belief to challenge the best in the world in higher weight classes. The fight he had with Machida (who was fighting as a HW) was damn close and look where Lyoto is now. The first fight with GSP was damn close. And he beat Hughes back when Hughes was invincible. Only AS has that kind of range outside of his weight class.

Interesting

I think GSP will still ba able to man handle a % of MW tho. But i agree not the elite ones. Look how big Alves is. Prolly at 200 when the fight happened, and GSP beat him up, well atleast dominated him and did what he wanted. I am really interested to see how he will look. Reserving my judgement untill me ACTUALLY see him fight at MW. PS. Georges walks around at 195-200 now. And not an unhealthy 200 at that!

by Sharkattak on Jan 27, 2010 4:14 AM EST reply actions

GSP walks around at 193 as of his last interview on the subject. If he went up to MW he would probably put on another 7-10 lbs at least.

But bear in mind he is only 5’ 10. That’s a perfect height for WW, but small for MW. Look at the size of guys like Marquardt, Franklin (should he return to MW), AS, Hendo, Wandy, Belfort, etc.

GSP would still be able to take guys down, but it would be more taxing. He would be an average sized MW at best. And he’d have to deal with the added power in striking. His only real weakness is that he can be tagged and put out. Not that it’s a weakness because you could say that about anyone, but I don’t think GSP has a granite chin like a Hendo, or a BJ Penn for example. I think he has a good chin, but he doesn’t want to be eating strikes from the likes of AS, that’s for sure.
